WWE Raw results: Bayley returns for payback on Becky Lynch after WrestleMania snub

WWE Raw on June 9, 2025, had one big surprise that fans didn't see coming. Bayley returned to live programming and went straight after the woman who put her out of action, Becky Lynch. The show took place at the PHX Arena in Phoenix, Arizona, and what started as a celebration turned into chaos. Becky Lynch came out to kick off the segment. She was all smiles, happy to talk about her win at Money in the Bank, where she became the Women's Intercontinental Champion against Lyra Valkyria. Lynch spoke about how proud she was and how this belt was now the most important prize in WWE because it's hers. She then took a shot at Lyra Valkyria, calling her a 'crazy bird lady' and demanding an apology after their heated moment after the match at Money in the Bank. At the event, Becky Lynch had pulled Lyra's tights and cheated to win the match. After that, she asked Lyra to raise her hand (a per a pre-match condition) repeatedly and then went on to humiliate the former champion by asking Lyra to put the belt around her waist in the most condescending manner. However, Lyra couldn't take the disrespect further and took out Becky Lynch after their match at Money in the Bank. On Raw, Becky wanted Lyra to raise her hand properly this time and walked to the ring expecting a showdown. But what she got instead was a beatdown. Bayley strikes back after WrestleMania 41 shenanigans BAYLEY is BACK!#WWERaw As Valkyria made her entrance, a returning Bayley ran in from behind and attacked Lynch. The crowd roared as the former Women's Champion made her return for revenge. Bayley had been out since April after Becky took her out backstage. But the fire behind her return was about more than just payback. Becky had taken Bayley's WrestleMania moment earlier this year. Bayley was supposed to have a featured match, teaming up with former IC champion Lyra Valkyria against Judgment Day members Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez for the women's Tag-Team Championship titles at the biggest show of the year. Bayley was spotted getting attacked by someone backstage and Lyra had 24 hours to find a new partner. Becky Lynch stepped up and returned to WWE after a long hiatus. However, it was later found out that Becky had orchestrated the attack on Bayley a day before WrestleMania 41. Becky's attack not only injured her but also robbed Bayley's spot on the card. That loss stayed with Bayley, and now she's back to take it all back. Becky tried to run away, but Lyra blocked the ramp. Bayley went for her Roseplant finisher, but Lynch barely escaped and fled through the crowd. Lyra stood stunned, clearly not expecting Bayley to show up like this. Bayley didn't say a word. She let her actions do the talking. And after weeks of silence, she's finally back with unfinished business and Becky Lynch in her sights.

Gunther signed new WWE deal in 2024, talks WrestleMania 41 match against Jey Uso

As he prepares for WrestleMania 41, World Heavyweight Champion Gunther is on the verge of breaking records. Heading into the biggest event of the year with 249 days as champ, Gunther also confirmed his commitment to WWE, having signed a new contract at the end of 2024. Gunther's reign as World Heavyweight Champion has been a dominant force in WWE, and as he heads into WrestleMania 41, he's poised to break even more records. With 249 days under his belt as champion, Gunther is just 67 days away from surpassing Seth Rollins' record for the longest World Heavyweight Championship reign, which currently stands at 316 days. Win, lose, or draw at the event, Gunther's future with WWE is secure, having signed a new contract at the end of 2024. "I'm set where I am," Gunther told Ariel Helwani in a recent interview. Reflecting on his journey since signing with WWE in 2019, he shared his appreciation for the trust the company has shown him. "Since I signed in 2019, I've been champion like 85-90% of the time. So obviously they always saw me a certain way and gave me that trust, and I enjoyed it." Gunther's dominance in WWE began with his record-breaking reign as NXT UK Champion, which was followed by another milestone: the longest reign as WWE Intercontinental Champion, a title that had stood for over 30 years. In 2023, he added the World Heavyweight Championship to his impressive list of accomplishments after defeating Damian Priest at SummerSlam, with an assist from Finn Balor. Looking ahead to WrestleMania 41, Gunther's path to even more history is clear. Should he defeat 2025 Men's Royal Rumble Winner Jey Uso at the event, he will not only defend his World Heavyweight Championship but will also solidify himself as one of WWE's most dominant champions, holding the record for the longest reign in all three titles he's won. Gunther's dedication to his craft and satisfaction with WWE's faith in him reflects his commitment to both the company and the sport. As his title reign continues, fans eagerly await his next milestone, which could very well come at the biggest stage of them all: WrestleMania.

Glow of the future

Women's wrestling history would be incomplete without the mention of Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling or GLOW. Founded by David McLane in 1986, GLOW featured colourful characters and over-the-top stories and the women who made their name in the company came from different backgrounds and professions – from models to gymnasts – to be a part of the show business. The crazy, colourful world of '80s women's wrestling found its audience on TV for several years. McLane brought in Mando Guerrero, elder brother of the legendary Eddie Guerrero, to train the women. He also onboarded Sylvester Stallone's mother Jackie Stallone to play the kayfabe owner of GLOW. Kayfabe, in pro-wrestling, refers to the suspension of disbelief that everything staged in front of the audience is, in fact, unscripted. In 2017, Netflix released a series called GLOW, starring Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin and Marc Maron. The series, although fictional, was based on the original GLOW promotion and characters. It ran for three seasons and was only cancelled due to the pandemic. The '90s fall The '90s were once again a tumultuous time for women's wrestling, especially in the major promotions: WWE and WCW. The latter introduced the WCW Women's Championship in 1996 but it was only active for two years. The WWE Women's Championship was active for a few years in the early '90s, then was retired back and forth a few times throughout the decade. Bull Nakano and Luna Vachon were some of the important names of the period. One significant moment occurred when Alundra Blayze joined WCW while still having possession of the WWE Women's Championship, and threw the title in a trash can live on air. Perhaps that sums up the state of women's wrestling in major companies of the '90s. One exception was Chyna. She not only became the Women's Champion, but also the Intercontinental Champion – a title for the men's division – twice. She was also the first ever woman to compete in the King of the Ring tournament and the Royal Rumble match. One of the most dominant women ever, she defeated male superstars such as Kurt Angle, Triple H, Chris Jericho and more, and was inducted posthumously into the WWE Hall of Fame as part of the D-Generation X. Meanwhile, Japanese female wrestlers and Mexican luchadoras continued perfecting their craft in their home countries and shining in sporadic appearances and short runs in the '90s. History repeated itself and women's wrestling in WWE became relegated to sexualised presentations instead of an athletic competition. It went from being performed in strip joints for the amusement of American soldiers to being pretty much strip shows performed in front of a global audience. The 2000s aggression In early 2000s, the likes of Sable (Brock Lesnar's wife), Torrie Wilson, Stacy Keibler, Trish Stratus, and dozens more were the mainstays of such segments and matches. Although one can say it was a different era. From the start of the Attitude Era in the late '90s to the end of Ruthless Aggression era in mid to late 2000s, the shows were not PG-rated. And the target audience was not children like it has been since. WWE shows were extremely violent and women's matches – mainly fillers where the one who strips the opponent down wins – were there to cater to the male fans. But at the same time, there was a roster of women who were hungry for more. The likes of Victoria, Holly Molly, Jacqueline Moore, and most notably, Trish Stratus and Lita. Although women had been in the main event of WWE shows before – Blayze vs Bertha Faye in 1995 – WWE doesn't count that. And thus, Stratus vs Lita for the Women's title on Raw in December 2004 became the first recognized women's main event match in WWE history. Lita won the match and cemented her legacy and her rivalry with fellow Hall of Famer Stratus is one of the best known of the 2000s. While the same overly sexualised segments and matches continued, there was also a part of the division who were putting on great wrestling matches. This was also the era when we saw a 77-year-old Mae Young get powerbombed off the stage through a table by the absolute maniac Bubba Ray Dudley, and Austin and Triple H hit the hardest head chair shots to Lita. This, as I remember, was an era when even women participated in violent spots – a remnant of the ECW and the overall angst of the 90s that spilled through until the mid-2000s. It was an interesting period as a wrestling fan when sex and violence sold big time. And even the women who weren't known for their in-ring skills still became staples of the era and are celebrated today. Two names – Lita and Stratus – are to be considered pioneers of the 2000s women's wrestling in WWE. Stratus, a model, significantly evolved as a wrestler during her time. And Lita pioneered by performing high-risk, dangerous moves that usually male stars did. They both paved the way for more women to follow suit and a large number of contemporary wrestlers grew up watching them and were inspired by them to become wrestlers. The divas era Unfortunately, that era would also come to an end as we stepped into the 'Divas Era'. It's a period when WWE would once again hire untrained models for the women's division and were only allotted two to three minutes for a match. Considered one of the worst periods in WWE for women's wrestling, it was a time when women became fillers before the important matches. Fans became conditioned to use women's matches for bathroom breaks during the show. It wasn't fair to the women who worked hard but it was understandable since a lot of the wrestling was of poor quality being performed by barely-trained models who had no business being in the ring. The Bella Twins, coming from that era, became the Kardashians of wrestling. Others dispersed. Similar to every era, it wasn't all terrible. Women such as Eve Torres, Michelle McCool (Undertaker's wife), Beth Phoenix, Layla, Kaitlyn, and in the later period, AJ Lee (CM Punk's wife) and many more surpassed their peers and showcased what they were capable of. This, by 2015, is what led to fans realising that the women deserved more and were being disrespected by the company. And it ultimately gave birth to what was marketed as the Women's Revolution – a new era of women's wrestling. This is part three of the Women's Wrestling series.
