Around the Districts: Boherbue, Buttevant and Clondrohid
Rev Fr Jim Kennelly The Parishioners of Boherbue and Kiskeam Parish are presently in the process of bidding farewell to their Parish Priest for the past 21 years Rev Fr Jim Kennelly. The change will take place in conjunction with the Diocesan reshuffle in mid-July. He will be dearly missed of course for a number of reasons, each one with their own story to tell. He was the first Cork native, a Millstreet man, to take the role of Parish Priest in the area. Many years ago his neighbour Fr Bill Radley and the late Fr O'Sullivan from Ballydaly were Curates in the Parish. During his reign he endeared himself right throughout the Parish and even though the words of the song state that '21 years is a mighty long time' it literally flew. Now, I'm not stating that we grew older quicker because of his presence, no not at all, but he was so easy to converse with and such a caring and helpful Priest that he will never be forgotten by this generation. We thank him and we will pray that he will have a long and happy retirement at the family home in Millstreet and as its just around the corner there is no doubt he will be visiting and helping out if required. When he first arrived in 2024 his Secretary Sheila O'Keeffe took up that role in the Parish and we too express our gratitude to her for all the help and additional duties, such as Mass booklets for special occasions etc., nothing was too much trouble. I believe the new Parish Priest will be announced this weekend and we will too welcome him and help to try and make his stay a happy and peaceful one. On Sunday last the Kiskeam side of the Parish held their Mass of Thanksgiving and Farewell to Fr Kennelly followed by refreshments in the Community Centre. The Boherbue function takes place on Friday July 4th with Mass in the Church of the Immaculate Conception at 7.30pm followed by refreshments in the Pearse Memorial Hall where people will have the opportunity to chat with Fr Kennelly. Organising Chairman Ned Vaughan is encouraging Clubs etc with crests to wear their colours or uniforms as a mark of appreciation to Fr Jim for his support and encouragement during his time here. For those wishing to drop in homebaking to the hall it will be open from 6pm onwards. ADVERTISEMENT GOLF SOCIETY Boherbue Golf Society held an outing to Killarney on Saturday. There was a good attendance and some keen competition. Results were as follows 1st Catherine Sheahan, Cork 42pts; 2nd Frank Sheahan, do., 40pts; 3rd Tadgh Leahy, Main St. 38pts; 4th Bryan Leahy, Airport Hill 36pts. Visitors 1st Batt Murphy, Monkstown 40pts; 2nd John Leahy, Watford, England and Causeway 39pts. Afterwards, all enjoyed a meal which was followed by the presentation of prizes. Society Secretary John McAuliffe presided. Football Both the Intermediate and Nevin Cup sides were in action at the weekend. On Thursday the Nevin Cup squad reached the final with a 3-19 to 1-7 win over St. John's in Millstreet Town Park while the Intermediate team recorded a 1-14 to 1-7 away win over Buttevant on Sunday. Here the sides were close until ten minutes from the restart when a two pointer from Andrew O'Connor was followed by a Jerry O'Sullivan goal and another orange flag from John Corkery to put the issue beyond doubt. Garda station The opening hours this week are Thursday 26th and Friday 27th from 7.30pm to 9pm. BUTTEVANT Heritage Group Buttevant Heritage Group are celebrating Irish Walled Town Network Day on July 5th and have organised a programme of events over that weekend to coincide with the event. Anybody who wishes to exhibit their items etc should contact Francis Trimm at the local Post Office. There will be numerous events taking place in the playground and the Market Green area. There will also be many stalls exhibiting their various wages and produce on the footpath along Richmond Street. There will medieval war combat and various other exhibits taking place. All will be under the watchful eye of Fionn MacCumhail which was expertly sculptured by local artist Michael Culloty. There will be something to keep all age groups entertained. Your support will be greatly appreciated. Vigil Mass The Vigil Mass for the month of July will be celebrated in Lisgriffin Church. Lisgriffin Church is to undergo many renovations including interior painting exterior power washing and treatment in the Autumn. A sloped pathway to the Church entrance is also on the agenda. Extra street lighting is also to be provided in the Church vicinity. Running Club Buttevant Running Club held their annual 4-mile road race recently which attracted large attendance and was very well supported. Sponsored by Greenhall Motors annually this event has become more popular with each passing year. Club training continues on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7.15pm. in the G.A.A. grounds. Over-18-years is the required membership age and hi-vis gear compulsory. A great crowd attended, with many of those who received their First Holy Communion in May in attendance. They led the procession around the outside of church strewing flowers ahead of Fr Jim who was carrying the Monstrance. The choir sang their hymns and the congregation followed.. Active Retired Clondrohid Parish Active Retired headed off to Wexford last week for a few days holidays. A brilliant time was had by all, staying in the Talbot Hotel, and visiting places of interest during the days, Dunbrody Famine Ship, John F Kennedy Homestead, Wheellocks Strawberry Farm, and Johnstown Castle. 70% degree seats remain unfilled after 2nd phase DOST counselling
Hyderabad: Not even 30% of the 3.71 lakh degree seats in the state have been filled after the second phase of Degree Online Services, Telangana (DOST). According to the details released by the Telangana Council of Higher Education (TGCHE) on Friday, 43,568 students were allotted seats in the second phase of counselling. Of these, 6,077 had got seats in the first phase but participated again in the counselling to secure a seat in a better college. In the first phase, 60,436 students were allotted seats. "There is hardly any demand for degree courses. Maybe, if DOST counselling was held after EAPCET and after release of Intermediate supplementary results, a few more seats would be filled," said Y Ramakrishna, secretary, Telangana Degree College Managements Association. He said that there were way too many seats in undergraduate courses in degree colleges across the state. He also advocated stringent eligibility criteria for professional courses such as engineering to ensure students don't opt for them as the default choice irrespective of their capability to study. In Telangana, there are 805 degree colleges under DOST which offer 457 courses. TGCHE officials said they would be opening up degree courses to non-local students after the third phase of counselling. "We went ahead with DOST counselling as there are students who want to join only degree courses. We did not want to keep them waiting. If needed, we will have special phase counselling for supplementary students and those waiting for EAPCET," said V Balakista Reddy, DOST convenor and chairman, TGCHE. He said they were trying to reform degree education by updating the syllabus and introducing skill-based courses, but it would take a few years to see the results. Poverty should not hinder education: Andhra HRD Minister Lokesh at Shining Stars Award event
PARVATHIPURAM-MANYAM: 'We have introduced several educational reforms to make government schools compete with private institutions. I hope we will get good results in the coming four years with these reforms. You should work hard and focus on your studies. The government will take care of the rest of things,' said HRD and IT Minister Nara Lokesh, while presenting Shining Star Awards to SSC and Intermediate toppers at a programme held here on Monday. In all, 95 SSC and 26 Intermediate toppers of government schools and junior colleges received the awards at the programme. Interacting with students, Lokesh highlighted the initiatives taken by the NDA government to improve educational standards in schools. Lokesh took note of the opinions expressed by students at 'Dream Wall', 'Ambition Wall' and 'Gratitude Wall' arranged at the venue. District Incharge Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu, Minister for Women and Child Welfare Gummadi Sandhyarani, Government Whip T Jagadeeswari, Collector A Shyam Prasad, MLAs, MLCs and others participated in the programme.

‘Thalliki Vandanam' scheme will be implemented from this academic year, says Social Welfare Minister
Social Welfare Minister Dola Sri Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy, who is also the in-charge Minister for the Visakhapatnam district, has said that the benefits of the much-awaited 'Thalliki Vandanam' scheme will be distributed to the beneficiaries within a week. He took part in the 'Shining Stars' awards' presentation ceremony at the B.R. Ambedkar Assembly hall on the Andhra University campus here on Monday. The State government has announced the awards to the toppers in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Intermediate annual examinations for the year 2024-25. A total of 121 students, including 83 SSC toppers and 38 Intermediate toppers (six students from each mandal) from across the district, were presented with the awards by the guests. Each winner was presented a cash prize of ₹20,000 in the form of a cheque. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Swamy said that the State government will launch the 'Thalliki Vandanam' scheme this academic year and the amount will be transferred directly to the beneficiaries' accounts within a week. So, students and parents need not worry about it. He said that from this academic year, welfare students of Gurukul schools will be given coaching on IIT and NEET. He urged students to participate in the International Yoga Day celebrations to be held in the city on June 21, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the chief guest. District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad has said that Visakhapatnam students will always be at the top in education and other aspects. He has urged students to stay away from cellphones and IPL cricket matches during their student life for a better career. Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat, Government Whip P.G.V.R. Naidu (Ganababu) and others participated. The awardees and their parents expressed happiness on the initiative taken by the government to encourage students.

‘Shining Stars' awards to SSC, Inter merit students
Guntur: The State government decided to give Shining Stars awards to the students, who secured highest marks in SSC and Intermediate public examinations. The award will be given to the merit students studied in government and private schools during the academic year 2024-25. The government directed the officials to select the students mandal wise and give the Shining Stars Award. The school education secretary Kona Sasidhar issued orders to this effect on Friday. The aim of the government is to improve the quality of education and standards. The government instructed the officials to give awards on June 9 at all the district headquarters. In every mandal, awards will be given to six students, who secured highest marks in the SSC. The officials will select two OC students, two BC students, one SC, one ST students. Similarly, Shining Star awards will be given to 36 Intermediate students for the district. Intermediate students belonging to OC, BC, SC, ST, Minority who scored more than 830 marks will get awards. The selected SSC and Intermediate students will be given Rs 20,000 cash incentive, medal and certificate as a token of appreciation. They will be felicitated.
