Saudi Arabia Launches Key Initiatives to Lead in AI Era
Saudi Arabia has unveiled a series of strategic initiatives aimed at addressing global challenges in computing, data, and algorithms, according to Minister of Communications and Information Technology Abdullah Alswaha. Backed by the support of His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, these efforts are designed to harness artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity. Alswaha made the announcement during his speech at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) 160th anniversary celebration in Geneva, attended by global leaders, policymakers, and technology experts. He emphasized that the world is entering a pivotal phase marked by rapid AI advancement. With significant disparities in access to computing power, data, and algorithms, Alswaha called for urgent, collective global action. Reaffirming the Kingdom's commitment to digital transformation, he underscored Saudi Arabia's focus on building international partnerships to bridge the digital divide and promote inclusive AI development. Alswaha stressed the importance of collaboration in shaping a more equitable and technologically empowered future, warning that failure to act could deepen divides between nations and societies. SDAIA Awarded WSIS Certificate of Excellence for Organizing AI Olympiad
The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2025 has awarded SDAIA a Certificate of Excellence for organizing the first global edition of the International AI Olympiad (IAIO). During the 2025 award ceremony, the WSIS recognized the IAIO as an unparalleled project in Category 7 (E-Science), according to the Saudi Press Agency. The ceremony also represented an integral part of the AI for Good Summit in Geneva held from July 8 to 11. This recognition reflects the ongoing efforts of the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) to boost innovation and elevate national and international capacities of the artificial intelligence. Through advanced initiatives and programs, SDAIA also seeks to empower national talents and build the technological and programming skills of the future leaders. Crucially, the awarded projects constitute only 9% of the total number of projects submitted to the annual WSIS Prizes. Organized by the UN International Telecommunication Union (ITU), WSIS Prizes witnessed the participation of over 194 countries, mirroring the significance of global competition. In collaboration with the International Center for AI Research and Ethics (ICAIRE), AI Olympiad featured participants from more than 25 countries around the world. By hosting such a prestigious exhibition, SDAIA offers an international platform for AI competitions and an umbrella that brings together brilliant minds and spreads the concept of the Smart Olympiad among current generations.
