Can beer be your next beauty solution?
On International Beer Day, as mugs clink and cheers echo, let's look beyond the beverage's intoxicating charm. Could beer be more than just a drink? With beauty influencers hyping DIY beer hair rinses and face masks, it's worth questioning: Does beer really do wonders for your skin and hair? Can beer be your next beauty solution?(Photo: Adobe Stock) What's actually inside? Beer has long been touted for its surprising benefits outside the bar, especially in homegrown beauty remedies. But dermatologists urge a more nuanced look before you start pouring a pint over your scalp. 'While beer does contain some beneficial components for skin and hair, its topical use should be with caution,' says Dr Deepali Bhardwaj, a dermatologist. She explains further, 'key components like vitamins, especially B vitamins like antioxidants, and amino acids can contribute to skin hydration and hair shine. However, the concentration of these beneficial ingredients in beer is relatively low compared to dedicated skincare and haircare products. Besides, absorption of beer ingredients through the skin is limited.' Beer is not a miracle fix Dr Bhardwaj also debunks some of the most common myths floating online. For instance, there's no scientific evidence to support that beer can cure acne. Its alcohol content can actually irritate sensitive skin. Similarly, while beer has nutrients, no reliable data is proving it can stimulate hair growth. Any hydration benefits are minimal and often counteracted by the skin-drying effects of alcohol. There are risks In fact, the risks may outweigh the rewards for many. Dr Bhardwaj warns, 'Regular use of beer-based beauty remedies can lead to side effects, especially for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin. The alcohol in beer can be drying and irritating, leading to redness or an exacerbation of conditions like rosacea and eczema,' she says. 'It can also disturb the skin's pH balance, disrupting its barrier and making it more vulnerable to breakouts, oiliness, and infections.' She adds. Stick to it once in a while Dr Kiran Sethi, another dermatologist, offers a more measured take. 'Beer has anecdotal evidence but no scientific backing. That said, it contains proteins, amino acids, sugars, B vitamins, and has a low pH, which can theoretically improve shine and strength,' she says. She recommends using beer sparingly, perhaps once every few weeks as a rinse after shampoo, left on for a few minutes before washing off. 'I would only use it for dull hair and a lack of shine. I wouldn't use it for anything else.' She says. When it comes to skincare, Dr Sethi again stresses the lack of scientific support. 'The most important benefit it may have is from yeast, or saccharomyces (a sugar fungus). It's a good bacteria that might soothe inflammation. But given that it's alcohol, it is likely to cause dryness and redness, so I am not a fan.' She shares. While the idea of beer as a beauty booster sounds fun and buzzy, it's not exactly the skin or hair miracle it's made out to be. 'Before swapping your conditioner for a lager or dabbing beer on a breakout, it might be wise to stick to science-backed products or, at the very least, proceed with caution and a patch test.' Dr Deepali concludes. (Written by: Richa Singh)

Beer lovers are spoilt for choice in this market, from unique sours to full-flavoured IPAs and even non-alcoholic options — whatever tickles your fancy, there is something for everyone. They've got a westside hazy pale ale with tropical fruit flavours and a slight lemon twist for those who like their beers more colourful and fuller bodied. Or, a 'justa lager' which, as the name suggests, is a straightforward everyday drinking beer described as a hybrid of a European and Australian styles. The food is also a staying point, provided by a venue-in-a-venue Brown Street Grill that sits inside the walls of the microbrewery where the main event is the wood fired grill. To celebrate International Beer Day, Brightank is offering 20 per cent off all complete four packs of takeaways. Why not head down, indulge in a pint and then continue the party at home? The beers on tap are all quality and cater to every beer-loving palate, including Perth-brewed originals as well as some from their Adelaide home base. Pick up a paddle of any four beers of your choice and you've found the ultimate spot to indulge in a selection of delicious brews for an after-work treat. 'Dude-food' takes centre stage in the kitchen with the Signature Tomahawk on offer daily after 3pm, alongside pub classics like calamari, arancini and crispy fried chicken. On the Verandah Bar, you'll discover your new favourite brew with an extensive selection of 18 beers on tap, and you can indulge while taking in the best view of the Indian Ocean in Perth. Even with a chill in the air, the sun still comes out, so it's a terrific spot to join the beach-going public and Cottesloe locals and enjoy a brew on International Beer Day. The food is also on point with a selection of small plates (think olives, oysters, squid and octopus), pizzas as well as main events like fish and chips, a seafood stew and pan-fried gnocchi. The Leederville Precinct features venues The Garden, Servo Yard Bar and The Leederville Hotel among others and will leave you feeling full, content and a little bit tipsy. The Garden features more than 13 beers on tap and they rotate often, but have some cemented favourites like the Leedy Local Draught and a strong selection of James Squire offerings. The food has a distinct Italian slant with the menu divided into antipasti, pasta and 'secondi' (the main course after entrée and 'primi' the pasta course). It's a similar story at Servo nearby where the selection ranges from the tried and true favourite lagers to something a bit more 'on trend' with offerings like Rocky Ridge 'Rock Candy' fruited sour and a Margaret River Beer Company 'In The Pines' NEIPA. They have an extensive menu to keep those hunger pangs at bay as they're open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A trip to the area would not be complete without a stop at The Leederville Hotel for a classic pub-meets-party energy, where more than a dozen cold ones are available on tap. Whether this International Beer Day you want to party hard and sample all the brews or relax in a courtyard in a quieter affair, you'll find both on offer in The Leederville Precinct. It's the people's beer and a session drink, so you can settle into a plate of ribs alongside WA's favourite draught and be set for the afternoon. If you're after something a little bit more refined, they have Stone & Wood Pacific Ale, Pirate Life and Voodoo Ranger Hazys on offer too, among others. Ribs Lane in Mount Lawley and Subiaco. Credit: Supplied If you prefer to celebrate International Beer Day on a rooftop, overlooking the city skyline with a frosty in your hand, you'd be best off heading to Terrarium in Perth's CBD. While primarily focused on crafting cocktails for punters, this bar does have a decent offering to celebrate International Beer Day. Grab yourself a schooner or a pint of some beautiful South West brews from Beerfarm, CBCo Brewing and Margaret River Beer Co as well as a solid collection of packaged beers. In the eats department, the offering starts off at nibbles (nuts, olives and 'kikones' - fried Spanish corn kernels) through to small bites (parfait, potatoes, arancini) and more substantial eats (burgers, a steak sandwich and pasta). International Beer Day is a great opportunity to gather some friends, work colleagues or family members (the ones you like) for a frosty brew and some decent food and Perth has it in spades. In August, three days highlight beer's range of flavors, aromas and styles that will turn you into a beer geek for sure. (Photo by: Jeffrey Greenberg/Universal Images Group via Getty Images) Jeffrey Greenberg/Universal Images Group via Getty Images Started in Santa Cruz, California in 2007, International Beer Day is a wide day to enjoy all manner of beers. The day has three main goals: To gather with friends and enjoy the taste of beer, to celebrate those responsible for brewing and serving beer and to unite the world under the banner of beer, by celebrating the beers of all nations together on a single day. So on International Beer Day, the number one thing is to enjoy beer with people you care most about. The holiday also celebrates the gift of giving beer to all manner of people from brewers in the industry to your favorite brewery tasting room beertender. These people work really hard to serve you your favorite pints and they should be rewarded with the gift of, well, your favorite beer! Lastly, the day is all about uniting beer lovers throughout the world. From Germany to South Africa to Japan, beer is a global beverage that deserves your attention. Perhaps on International Beer Day you try a style new to you like the Polish grodziske (also known as a gratzer) with its soft wheat and smoke flavor or a Catharina sour, a Brazilian style that's a mingling of sour flavors with fresh fruits like passionfruit or mango. (Photo by: Edwin Remsberg / VWPics/Universal Images Group via Getty Images) VW Pics/Universal Images Group via Getty Images National IPA Day- August 7 (The First Thursday In August) Started by former beer writer Ashley Routson, this is one of the most popular beer days on the calendar with many breweries and people celebrating. IPA or India pale ale, is a very popular style of beer where the hops, one of the main ingredients in beer, are the key factor in aroma and flavor. Hops, an agricultural product, have oils in them and depending on the variety, where they are grown in the world and how they are used in the brewing process, can impart lots of different flavors/aromas to beer from floral to citrusy to tropical and beyond. IPAs can be non-alcoholic and they can be 14% ABV. They can be golden, they can be dark. It's a very versatile style that has something for everyone. National IPA day was started in 2011 with Routson and some industry friends at the helm and it blew up that year and now has taken on a life of its own. To celebrate, see if any of your local breweries are doing anything special or it's easy as celebrating by opening up your favorite IPA. Sierra Nevada's hazy IPA day celebrates all things hazy in August. Sierra Nevada Brewing Company Hazy IPA Day - August 21 (Third Thursday In August) Started by Sierra Nevada Brewing Company in 2023, the newest beer day on the block celebrates a specific style of hazy IPA, which is currently one of the most popular styles of IPA on the market. Hazy IPAs (also known as New England IPAs) usually have a fuller body and a juicy flavor from the hops. The juiciness is also in the appearance as the beer can look like a big glass of orange juice. Hazy IPAs can be non-alcoholic or they can be very strong, upwards of 12% ABV. Sierra Nevada created the holiday to show off their large range of hazy IPAs including the best selling Hazy Little Thing. Celebrating Hazy IPA Day is easy, just drink them! Since they are so popular, visit your local brewery to see if they make this style or visit a local beer shop to see what they have available. Cheers to a tasty month and remember to drink responsibly with people you truly care about.
