Joy spread among orphans on Children's Day

In a touching display of goodwill, a Chinese company brought joy and hope to underprivileged children by donating essential supplies to an Islamabad orphanage, marking a special celebration of International Children's Day. The China State Construction Engineering Corporation Limited (CSCEC) Pakistan branch extended a helping hand to the Islamabad China-Pakistan One Heart Step and Cure Home (ICOSH), gifting items worth Rs2 million, including school supplies, daily necessities, sports equipment and electrical appliances. The contribution aims to enhance the living conditions and educational opportunities for children at the facility. Established in 2023 by the Beijing One Heart Sphere Charity Foundation and the China-Pakistan Youth Exchange Community (CPYEC), ICOSH initially focused on assisting critically ill Pakistani patients seeking medical treatment in the capital. Over time, it has expanded into a haven for disabled and seriously ill children, while also providing full-time care for 21 orphans, Gwadar Pro reported on Tuesday. Since its inception on May 28, 2023, ICOSH has supported over 130 orphans and children suffering from severe illnesses. The latest contribution from the Chinese company underscores the deepening friendship between China and Pakistan, reflecting the spirit of shared compassion and mutual support. The donation ceremony was attended by Yang Guangyuan, Minister Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan, who extended warm Children's Day greetings to the young residents. "It is an honour to participate in this meaningful initiative," said Yang. "We hope this event marks a new chapter in deepening China-Pakistan humanitarian cooperation and inspires more social forces to contribute to this noble cause." Addressing the event, Wang Yaodong, CEO of CSCEC Pakistan, highlighted the company's long-standing commitment to social responsibility alongside infrastructure development. Children at ICOSH also celebrated Children's Day with special activities, enjoying games and performances in a festive atmosphere.

THE Scottburgh Regional Court has sentenced a 38-year-old man to life imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to the rape of a 64-year-old woman. The rape occurred in 2023 in the KwaCele area. According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), in the early hours of 18 January 2023, the complainant was asleep in her bed when she felt someone's presence in her room, and she awoke. NPA regional spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said the accused grabbed her and used his hand to cover her mouth to prevent her from screaming. Ramkisson-Kara further revealed that the accused then climbed through the bedroom window and fled the scene. 'He was arrested shortly after, at his place of residence, after being pointed out by the complainant and her daughter. 'In aggravation of the sentence, Prosecutor Thanusha Govender told the court that the circumstances of the offence were inhumane. MWO-Dubai kicks off vaccination program for parents and children

In celebration of International Children's Day and as part of its unwavering commitment to the welfare of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and their families, the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) Dubai, in partnership with OWWA and Grand Infinity Medical Center, successfully launched a targeted vaccination drive on 01 June 2025 at MWO Dubai. The program was specially designed for parents and children whose UAE documentary status is still under process, and are currently receiving assistance from MWO Dubai's Assistance to Nationals Section. While waiting for their documentary requirements for repatriation, the event responded to the pressing health needs of these children, who are often unable to access basic medical services in both public and private healthcare institutions due to a lack of official documentation and financial resources. The vaccination drive provided them with crucial immunizations and healthcare support. A total of 22 parents received medical check-ups, and 29 children were vaccinated as part of the initiative. The children were brought to Grand Infinity's clinic in Muhaisnah 4, Dubai, where they received professional care in a safe and supportive environment. The beneficiaries also received financial assistance under the AKSYON Fund, along with gift items from MWO Dubai, OWWA, and Grand Infinity Medical Center, and food packs distributed throughout the event. In addition, parents participated in a basic childcare orientation, equipping them with vital knowledge for ensuring the well-being of their children. The event was honored by the presence of high-ranking officials, including Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac, Consul General Marford Angeles, Undersecretaries Felicitas Q. Bay and Jainal T. Rasul, Vice-Consul Aleah Marie B. Gica, and Director Julyn Ambito Fermin. In his remarks, Secretary Cacdac emphasized the administration's continuing pledge under President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. to ensure that all OFWs and their families are afforded access to proper documentation and medical care—regardless of status. This initiative builds on the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed between MWO Dubai and Grand Infinity Medical Center on 14 February 2025, which aims to expand access to healthcare services for OFWs and their families in the UAE.

‘It should not rain', Met department orders weather gods for children can play; social media reacts

China's Shenzhen Meteorology Bureau issued a 'notice' and asked the weather gods to ensure it didn't rain on Children's Day. The video, shared on social media, quickly went viral and made people smile. In the clip, a man dressed like a news anchor announces that as Shenzhen is a child-friendly city, the weather must stay nice on June 1. This year, Children's Day also matched with the Dragon Boat Festival, so both kids and parents had the day off. The official 'ordered' gods like Leigong (God of Thunder), Dianmu (Goddess of Lightning) and Longwang (Dragon King) to avoid rain and keep temperatures around 31°C. 'This year's Children's Day coincides with the Dragon Boat Festival, meaning both children and parents are on holiday. To guarantee a pleasant environment for parents to take their children out to play, we order that it should not rain throughout Shenzhen on June 1,' the South China Morning Post quoted the man as saying. 'In some special situations, it is permitted to rain in small areas and rain for a short period. The temperature should be controlled around 31 degrees,' it added. On Children's Day (June 1), Shenzhen was mostly cloudy with light rain in some places. People online joked that the city's weather department had become so powerful, it could even command the gods. The Shenzhen Meteorology Bureau is known for its fun and creative weather updates. 'Ha, that is why it did not rain. Shenzhen Meteorology Bureau, you are so powerful that you can even make orders to Leigong, Dianmu and Longwang,' SCMP quoted one social media user. 'Your serious expression in reading out this notice almost convinced me,' commented another. On International Children's Day, China Central Television (CCTV) highlighted China's efforts for child development. In 2024, primary and secondary schools in Beijing added a longer 15-minute break in their schedule, 5 minutes more than before. This extra time gives students a better chance to enjoy physical activities and refresh themselves to support their physical and mental growth, it reported. According to the publication, President Xi Jinping strongly believes that children's health is very important. He has often said that physical strength is key for students and has encouraged sports in schools.

North Korea Celebrates Triplets Amid Birth Rate Crisis

North Korean state media has released a special report hailing the birth of three triplets -a rare moment of positivity amid what analysts believe to be a steady demographic decline in the reclusive country. Newsweek reached out to the North Korean embassy in China via email with a request for comment. The North Korean authorities don't regularly publish population figures. United Nations estimates based on records released in past decades put the country's fertility rate at 1.78 births per woman last year-below the 2.1 threshold needed to sustain a population. This is higher than fertility rates of South Korea, Japan, and China, which are already scrambling to adapt to their aging populations. However, international sanctions over the Kim Jong Un regime's nuclear weapons program have deprived the country of 26 million of many types of advanced automated machinery and left it more reliant on manual labor than its East Asian neighbors. The three boys were born in February to Kim Hyang Mi, a resident of Tokchon City, whose husband, Kim Nam Il, works at a local coal mine, according to the state-run Korean Central News Agency. After learning she was pregnant with triplets, Kim was transferred to Pyongyang Maternity Hospital, where she reportedly received the best care available. The weight of one of the newborns was only 1.18 kg (4 pounds)-a cause for concern. All three now weigh over 4 kg (8.8 pounds) and are considered healthy, according to the report. They were discharged from the hospital on Monday. The extent of medical attention given to Kim and the triplets signals the seriousness with which the authorities are taking the declining birthrate. The announcement follows a September report by Radio Free Asia that authorities had punished doctors for performing secret abortions and cracked down on marketplace vendors selling contraceptives. While the government has in recent years made some efforts to improve the health of its youngest citizens-such as mandating free dairy products-human rights groups citing local sources have detailed harsh punishments meted out to children, including lengthy prison camp terms for offenses committed by family members. On Saturday, the regime published images of a celebratory event marking International Children's Day, which critics saw as an attempt to whitewash its image amid international condemnation over its human rights record. Young-Jin Choi, a professor at South Korea's Yonsei University, wrote in a Marchreport for North Korea-focused outlet 38 North: "North Korea is expected to enter into an aging society, with more than 14 percent of its population being 65 or older by 2025. "If these trends continue, North Korea will likely face a vicious cycle in which the low birth rate and an aging population will cause a further decline in economic vitality, which in turn will further aggravate the low birth rate and aging population problems." This trend is also likely to worry Kim as his military, the fourth-largest in the world, with roughly 30 percent of the population serving in active or reserve roles, amid ongoing tensions with the U.S.-allied South.
