Yoga practitioners in India rise to 542 million: CCRYN director

Raghavendra Rao, Director of the Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN), New Delhi, on Monday said that 11.38% of India's population practices yoga, and the number of people embracing the ancient art is steadily increasing. Speaking at the 'Cardio Yoga Summit-2025: Healing Diabetes Through Yogic Integration', at Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research (SJICSR), here, Dr. Rao said 542 million people in the country are practicing yoga, realising its significance for health. The number of yoga practitioners was 300 million in 2005, which has risen to 542 million in 2025, with a sharp rise among both the young and the elderly. The summit was organised in collaboration with the Government Ayurveda Research Centre, Mysuru, and the Department of AYUSH. Dr. Rao said there is not much difference between urban and rural areas in terms of yoga practitioners, and nearly 17% of the youth have taken to yoga, realising its benefits. 'People across age groups – young, middle-aged, and elderly – are taking up yoga courses and practicing yoga regularly,' he said. He also noted that the Union government has been promoting yoga in a big way, and the record turnout at Visakhapatnam during the International Day of Yoga 2025 is an indicator. Despite India being a yoga hub, research on yoga is not encouraging compared to studies being carried out in the United States, United Kingdom, and even Russia. 'If only 19% of studies on yoga are from India, it is 41% in the US,' he observed. He suggested that institutions should collaborate to carry out research in yoga, and collaborations with institutes such as Sri Jayadeva Institute can go a long way in this direction. K.S. Sadananda, medical superintendent, SJICSR, said that India is described as the diabetes capital of the world, along with increasing cases of heart diseases. Despite technological advancements, the incidence of diabetes continues to rise, and the number of people seeking help following a spurt in heart attacks is also going up. Attributing sedentary lifestyle as a major reason for the rise in diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, he said lifestyle modification is the need of the hour, and yoga plays an important role in addressing lifestyle diseases. 'Neither modern medicine nor yoga alone is the answer to these diseases. There is a need for integration of modern medicine and yogic medicine,' he added, calling for more research in yoga. Former Vice-Chancellor K.S. Rangappa, who delivered the chief guest address virtually, said type-2 diabetes continues to challenge the public health system. 'The number of people with type-2 diabetes was 31 million in 2000, and it can go up to 79 million in 2030. Yoga can be one of the answers to address lifestyle diseases. It can be an effective medium,' he said. The keynote address was delivered by M.A. Shekar, Vice-chancellor, Adichunchangiri University. SJICSR Bengaluru director Ravindranath delivered his presidential address, virtually. L.N. Shenoy, assistant director, GARC, Mysuru, was present.

Lucknow ‘Aam Mahotsav' turns chaotic as crowd loots mangoes; netizens call out ‘zero civic sense'

A mango festival held in Lucknow from July 4 to 6 turned into unexpected chaos, as attendees were seen rushing to grab as many mangoes as possible once the event wrapped up. Videos from the event have since gone viral, showing people clutching mangoes by the armful and storming the stalls with bags in hand. Organised in the heart of Uttar Pradesh's capital, the festival attracted prominent names including Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, poet Kumar Singh, and Bhojpuri star Pawan Singh, according to Free Press Journal. But it was the final day that stole all the attention online. As soon as the festival concluded on July 6, scores of visitors swarmed the mango stalls—some stuffing the fruits into sarees, dupattas, and even their pockets. A post shared by The Whatup (@thewhatup) The frenzy has triggered a wave of reactions across social media, with many users pointing fingers at poor event management and a serious lack of public discipline. One Instagram user commented, 'Aryabhatta invented zero by looking at India's civic sense.' Another wrote, 'What will they teach their kids if this is what they're doing at their age?' The uproar did not stop there. A particularly controversial comment read, 'Can we give UP-Bihar to Pakistan in exchange for them giving up Kashmir?' Others took a dig at the culture of handouts, with one writing, 'India can never improve. Govt makes sure people are addicted to freebies.' Another user summed up the frustration by saying, 'Those who can smile while committing such a shameless act possess a different set of skills.' This is not the only recent event where civic behaviour has come under fire. On June 21, during the International Day of Yoga 2025 in Visakhapatnam–which set a Guinness World Record with a gathering of over 3 lakh people–chaos erupted again. As soon as the event ended, people were caught on video physically fighting over free yoga mats, throwing punches to snag one before supplies ran out.

Through Fit India Cult Yogathon, the Sports Ministry is also celebrating the International Day of Yoga. I urge all citizens of the country to perform Yoga regularly to stay healthy and stay fit. Yoga is a mantra for fitness and healthy life.' Delighted at receiving the Fit India Icon award by Sports Minister, actor-producer Jackky Bhagnani said that the vision of PM Modi and the Sports Minister is amazing and he is very happy to be part of the Yogathon initiative. He further said that it is very important for the youth to stay fit, if one is physically fit, he will be mentally very positive. 'I am very pleased to see how our Sports Minister is himself leading the initiative like Sundays on Cycle to create awareness about fighting obesity and air pollution. I was 150kgs at one time and reduced my weight to 75kgs now and I find great motivation by the work done by our Sports Minister. I am super happy to be here for Yogathon,' Bhagnani said. Rakulpreet, on her part, said, 'It is a matter of great honour for us to be given the accolade of Fit India couple and to become part of this fabulous initiative by the Sports Ministry and Government of India. 'Yoga is beneficial for everyone, so every Indian should inculcate yoga in their daily routines, not just sportspersons. A fit and healthy nation can only build a Viksit Bharat, as our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has said. What I have noticed is that our Sports Minister is taking out time every week from his busy schedule for fitness-related activities, then we as citizens must also do so. I really like the slogan 'One earth, one health' for today's yogathon and I can say that health is our real wealth,' Rani Rampal said. Race walking Olympian Priyanka Goswami, while giving her best wishes to all the Indian citizens on the International Day of Yoga said: 'I will request each and every citizen of this country to keep themselves fit and healthy both physically and mentally on this 11th International Day of Yoga. For a sport like racewalking, it becomes tough to control your mind for a distance of 30-35 kilometres. Your mind wavers after every kilometre. So, yoga becomes important. Through daily meditation, I try to control my mind. I want to tell the youth that our priority should be to do physical activity and indulge in healthy nutrition and not in drugs, this will only make our nation fitter.' Individuals from different age groups, backgrounds and fitness levels are encouraged to participated in the one-day event that also included meditation and yoga nidra. As part of this collective celebration, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports reaffirmed its shared commitment to the timeless practice of yoga and its enduring relevance in today's world. (ANI)
