ISSF Munich World Cup 2025: Consistent final appearances, two golds, power India to strong finish
Munich [Germany], June 16 (ANI): A string of consistent final appearances and two standout gold medal performances, powered India to a commendable and strong third-place finish at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup (Rifle/Pistol) Munich 2025, one of the most competitive and popular events in the world of international rifle and pistol shooting. Held at the iconic Olympic Shooting range between June 8-15, 2025, the Munich World Cup saw India register their third top-three finish this year in four world cups, with two gold and two bronze medals. They not only improved their standing from joint third last year to sole this year, but also doubled their medal count, including the gold count, from last year's Munich World Cup, a release said. 'The Munich World Cup which is an annual feature of the International Shooting calendar and is held at the revered Olympic Shooting range, which hosted the sport at the 1972 Munich Olympics, has once again brought out the best in our rifle and pistol shooters,' said an overjoyed K. Sultan Singh, Secretary General, National Rifle Association of India (NRAI). He added, 'When many were saying and quite rightly so, that India will find it very tough given the large field, quality of competition and the fact that some of our best were not part of the squad, our athletes have proven that the depth in Indian shooting is more formidable than ever before. On behalf of the NRAI, I congratulate the entire squad, including the coaches and support staff, for the amazing results, not only in Munich, but throughout the year.' The high point for India at Munich this year, as also of this whole international season, has been the stunning consistency of rising women's pistol star Suruchi Phogat. The Haryana teenager won an unprecedented third consecutive individual ISSF World Cup stage gold in the women's 10m air pistol and to then imagine that Buenos Aires this year was her world cup debut, is mindboggling. She went where no Indian, man or woman, has even gone before. The other being Arya Rajesh Borse and Olympian Arjun Babuta's tremendous win over the Chinese world record holders Sheng Lihao and Wang Zifei, the former also the Olympic champion in the event, in the 10m air rifle mixed team final, where they completely outgunned the crack Chinese pair 17-7. With some incredible and consistent series of high scores, they showcased the depth and new found confidence of Indian shooting like never before. Elavenil Valarivan (women's 10m air rifle-arw), a two-time Olympian and Sift Kaur Samra (50m rifle 3 positions women-3P), Olympian and world record holder, also reinforced their status one of the world's top shooters, with their bronze-winning performances at Munich. Ela also set a new qualification national record of 635.9 en route to her bronze, while Suruchi equalled Manu Bhaker's qualification national mark of 588 in the women's air pistol. In keeping with the trend this year, Indian World Cup debutants, and there were as many as three in Munich, also delivered encouraging performances in world-class fields that they were up against first up. Ananya Naidu (arw) shot a solid 632.4 to finish 13th among contenders. Nishant Rawat (10m air pistol men-apm) and Aditya Malra (apm) too shot scores of 582 and 578 to finish 10th and 27th respectively. India made a total of seven finals in the 10 events in Munich with Manu Bhaker (women's 25m pistol), Varun Tomar (men's 10m air pistol) and Chain Singh (men's 3P), finishing sixth (both Manu and Varun) and seventh respectively, underlying India's strength in the sport. China finished on top of the standings with seven medals, including four gold, while Norway edged India to second on the basis of having won a silver with the same number of golds and medals as India. A total of 11 nations, including the individual neutral athletes group, won medals in Munich. The ISSF bandwagon next moves to Lonato Del Garda in Italy next month for the year's fourth Shotgun world cup stage, while the fourth and final Rifle/Pistol world cup is scheduled for Ningbo in China in September. Shooting World Cup: Suruchi enters 10m air pistol final
Suruchi Inder Singh stormed into the final of 10m Air Pistol women at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Shooting World Cup (rifle/pistol), while Paris Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker missed out to make the cut here on Friday. Suruchi scored 588 with 20 inner 10s to be placed second in the qualification, behind Yao Qianxun of China, who topped the qualification chart with Qualification World Record Junior of 589 - 21x. Meanwhile, Manu failed to make the final after finishing 25th after shooting 574 - 14x, while another Indian in the fray, Palak, finished 36th with 570 - 18x. Interestingly, Suruchi had pipped Manu in the women's 10m air pistol event at the ISSF World Cup 2025 Lima in Peru to win the gold in April this year. Suruchi shot a total of 243.6 in the final to beat compatriot Manu, a two-time Olympic medallist who shot 242.3 to grab the silver. This was Suruchi's second successive gold in the women's 10m air pistol event at ISSF World Cups this year. The 19-year-old from Jhajjar in Haryana won the gold medal in Buenos Aires in early April to mark her maiden podium finish at a senior World Cup. Meanwhile, Manu's silver medal in Peru was her first since striking a double bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympics. She had returned empty-handed from Buenos Aires. However, in Munich, another Indian, Sainyam, who was competing for the Ranking Points Only (RPO) shot 580 - 23x. Earlier, double Paris Olympics bronze medallist Manu finished sixth in the women's 25m pistol final. Olympian Elavenil Valarivan had opened India's medal count after winning bronze in the women's 10m air rifle on Day One. Sift Kaur Samra wins women's 3P bronze, her 2nd in two years in Munich
Munich [Germany], June 13 (ANI): World record holder Sift Kaur Samra, won bronze in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions (3P), on competition day three of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup (Rifle/Pistol) in Munich, giving India their second medal of the competition. The former world number one shot 453.1 in the final at the Olympic Shooting range, to finish behind Switzerland's Emely Jaeggi, who won silver with 464.8. Norwegian ace Jeanette Hegg Duestad won gold with 466.9. India now has two bronzes from the competition. Sift's second 3P bronze in Munich in as many years came on the back of a gold in the year's first Buenos Aires World Cup in April. In Munich on Thursday, she shot a characteristically strong and consistent qualification round with scores of 197, 199 and 196 each in Kneeling, Prone and the last Standing position respectively, to finish second in a top field. Agathe Girard of France pipped her to the top spot on the same score of 592, but with more shots in the inner 10 ring. While the Olympic champion Chiara Leonne of Switzerland missed out, so did India's Ashi Chouksey, a brilliant 589, giving her a ninth-place finish. Known to be a strong standing shooter in 3P, Sift ended the second Prone series of 15 shots in fourth position, behind Paris silver medalist Sagen Maddalena. Duestad and Emely were in a battle of their own for gold and silver quite early in the 45-shot final. Sagen then faltered in the first series of Standing shots and Sift gleefully accepted the window of opportunity to climb up to third, a position which she clinically maintained with a series of slim and mid to high 10s, right till the end of the penultimate 44th shot. On Friday, day four, the women's 10m Air Pistol final is also on schedule, as is the men's 25m rapid-fire pistol. ISSF World Cup: Manu Bhaker, Chain Singh reach finals but miss out on medals in Munich
Double Paris Olympics bronze medalist Manu Bhaker, finished sixth in the women's 25m pistol final, while Chain Singh finished seventh in the men's 50m rifle 3 positions (3P), as India continued to maintain a 100% finals appearance record, in the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup (Rifle/Pistol) in Munich. Manu rallied brilliantly in the second rapid-fire stage of qualification earlier in the day, to make a fourth individual world cup final this year, shooting a sublime 298/300 to finish fifth in the 94-strong field. She shot a total of 588. Chain too maintained his excellent form this year, returning a 592 in qualification to qualify sixth in a top field. It was his second individual world cup final this year, after having won bronze in Buenos Aires. The men's 3P was the first final of competition day two and the Indian could not recover from a score of 49.5 for his first five shots in the first Kneeling position, bowing out at the 40-shot mark with a tally of 407.0. The women's final which followed, had both the reigning Paris pistol champions from Korea, besides two top Chinese shooters, including Sun Yujie, who had won both the golds in the event in Buenos Aires and Lima. Manu started well and was in medal contention till the third series of five-shots, however a score of two-hits in the fourth, pegged her back. She fought hard, but could not finish beyond sixth, exiting after the sixth series with 20-hits to her name. Sun completed her hattrick with a score of 38, ahead of the two Korean champions Oh Yejin and Yang Jiin. India's search for a second medal, after Elavenil Valarivan had won bronze in the women's 10m air rifle on day one, continues on day three with the men's 10m air rifle and the women's 3P finals lined up.
