ANZ Premiership Netball: Waikato BoP Magic can't steal a win from rivals Southern Steel

Photo: Marty Melville A late comeback by the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic was not enough to stop a dominant Southern Steel from securing a 64-56 win in the ANZ Premiership in Invercargill on Saturday. The Steel are on a three-game winning streak and have taken outright third place on the points ladder with two more rounds before the finals. The Magic finished strongly with a last quarter flurry to win the final 15 minutes 18-11 but were outplayed across the first three quarters. Steel shooter Aliyah Dunn was nearly flawless from close to the hoop converting 43 of her 45 goal attempts. It was shooting accuracy which proved the difference at the end of the first quarter, the Steel leading 15-13 after nailing all their opportunities and the Magic missing two after both sides had equal attempts. In the second quarter the intense pressure employed by Carys Stythe and Abby Lawson under the Magic hoop resulted in turnovers while at the other end Dunn and Georgia Heffernan continued their recent strong form. The pair shared the load expertly and intuitively in feeding off each other with Dunn producing a standout first half through her positioning, pin-point shooting and rebounding ability. The home side were ahead 33-25 at halftime. The Magic struggled to keep up after the break with the Steel outscoring them 20-13 in the third period as the visitors' misguided passes and inaccuracies took a toll. The loss was the Magic's third defeat in a row and the second time they have lost to the Steel this season. Southland commercial fishermen sentenced for selling black market seafood worth thousands

Photo: EnviroStrat_Kinamonics Three Southland commercial fishers and another man have been fined for selling thousands of dollars of black market seafood. Fishermen Michael Noel Hawke, 61, Stuart Teiwi Ryan, 48 and Peter George Fletcher, 32, were sentenced at the Invercargill District Court after pleading guilty to a number of charges under the Fisheries Act. Duncan William Davis, 39, was sentenced on two charges for selling a large amount of kina, some pāua and blue cod that he had either caught or bought from Ryan to resell. The four men were fined a total of $36,900. The fines followed a larger 2023 investigation into the illegal sale of seafood, with fishery officers examining landing records and communication between the fishers, black-market suppliers and possible buyers. Fisheries New Zealand district manager Greg Forbes said none of the fishers held permits allowing them to sell fish. "Most commercial fishers follow the rules because they want their fishery to remain sustainable into the future - black-market sales of recreational catch is a slap in the face to the majority of commercial fishers who do the right thing," he said. Davis, who was not a commercial fisherman, faced the largest fine of $14,000 after selling up to 400 punnets of kina roe valued at up to $5000 and fish valued at about $2000. "This was deliberate and the motivation was simply to make money," he said. The investigation found Hawke, who was fined $6000, sold about 1000 dredge oysters during the 2023 season. They were valued at more than $3000 and while he was allowed to take them recreationally they were not part of his allowable commercial take. The investigation also found a deckhand aboard the fishing vessel was selling his allowable recreational catch. Forbes said Ryan was fined $13,000 after selling 114 crayfish and about 40 blue cod, making $2250. "Crayfish retails at about $140 a kg and blue cod $75 a kg," he said. Fletcher, who was a commercial fisherman and was fined $3900, sold about 200 dredge oysters illegally on about six occasions, Forbes said. "When we find evidence of deliberate illegal sales of seafood - we will take action," he said. "Poachers steal from everyone because the shared resources belong to all New Zealanders. Their behaviour also undermines the Quota Management System and our reputation for sustainable kaimoana." People could report suspected illegal activity through the Ministry of Primary Industries' poaching line 0800 476 224. Invercargill Council votes against cutting ties with companies that operate in illegal Israeli settlements

Photo: RNZ / Nate McKinnon Invercargill City Council has voted against cutting ties with companies that operate in illegal Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian land. On Tuesday afternoon, councillors debated whether to change to the council's procurement policy, following a proposal brought by local residents and members of Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa. Similar spending bans have already been adopted by Nelson City Council, Christchurch City Council and Environment Canterbury, targeting companies listed by the United Nations Human Rights Council. Invercargill City Council was split down the middle - with six councillors in favour and six against - but Mayor Nobby Clark's casting vote ended the debate. He said the council needed to balance its ethical commitment to the United Nations with its responsibility to be frugal in procurement decisions. Councillor Allan Arnold was also opposed, arguing that such a move wasn't in the council's remit. "We're the Invercargill City Council. Our job is to look after the water assets, infrastructure of Invercargill, and look after the people. This is far, far beyond our scope," he said. "We're here to look after our community in Invercargill. I can't understand why this is something we're looking at, at all." However, earlier, councillor Lesley Soper said taking a stand on ethical issues was an important part of being part of the world community. "We're not some isolated island, or some isolated council. Other councils have already taken the decision to make this inclusion on very valid grounds," she said. She noted the United Nations database would have made it easy to identify which companies to exclude. Councillor Darren Ludlow also wanted to see the council taking action. "As pointless as it may seem, there is a point. And that's leadership," he said. Earlier this week, the Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa said it would also present a proposal to Environment Southland, calling for a boycott of companies operating in illegal Israeli settlements.

$15m South Island Lotto winner claims prize

Plaza SuperValue Invercargill owners Jigs and Shelly Buha (back row, second and third from left) celebrate the store's big Lotto win with their staff yesterday. Photo: Nina Tapu The $15 million winning Lotto ticket sold at an Invercargill store has been claimed. Lotto NZ confirmed this morning the lucky shopper who bought their ticket at Plaza Super-Value had come forward. "We'll have more to share from them in the coming days," a spokeswoman said. Plaza SuperValue also sold a $1 million winning ticket to a punter last December. Saturday's $30m prize was shared by the Invercargill ticket and one bought by a MyLotto player in Wellington. Supermarket owner Jigs Buha said he was ''very happy'' and hoped that people would see them as the good-luck store. ''This is the second one, which is the huge jackpot, so our store is getting luckier.'' Those spoken to yesterday at the store were pleased with the $15m win for the lucky person and Mr and Mrs Buha. One Southland shopper said she was happy for the store especially since they had only just taken over the business. Customer and casual Lotto player Jerry King wished the lucky winner ''best wishes'' and hoped the winner did something ''worthy'' with their winnings. Mr Buha and his wife Shelly credited their staff for the win and will take them out for a celebratory meal next week.
