Is Gov. Youngkin eyeing a 2028 presidential run?
RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin spoke Thursday night at a high-profile GOP dinner in Iowa, sparking questions of whether he's eyeing a 2028 presidential run. The GOP Lincoln Dinner has historically been a testing ground for a future presidential run. President Trump and other candidates spoke at the dinner in 2023, and Nikki Haley spoke in 2021 ahead of her run in 2024. Virginia Governor attends annual Iowa GOP Lincoln Dinner 'Of course, you know the Iowa caucus, the first caucus, in any presidential cycle is very important. So, this has pretty much become a staple,' political analyst Dr. Eric Claville said Friday. The fact Youngkin has gotten more prominent attention on the national level, plus his support from Virginians, all bundled with his business acumen, leads Claville to believe he is the face of the Republican Party moving forward. 'When you look at the policies that the White House are championing, those are the same policies that the governor championed here to try to get passed in his first 100 days. One of his major mantras and accomplishments of this administration was that Virginia was the best state to do business.'He said Youngkin has as much a chance to win the GOP nomination as anyone, but sees Youngkin easily among the top three GOP candidates alongside other notables.'Look for JD Vance of course, current vice president, look for Ron DeSantis probably, look for another person coming out of the Republican Party, maybe in Congress,' Claville took office in 2022 and his term will end in 2026, giving him enough time to gather support for a presidential bid.'Definitely Gov. Glenn Youngkin is one to watch.' Claville noted Youngkin also has other opportunities besides the White House. Virginia has a state Senate race coming up and Youngkin could run against long-time Sen. Mark Warner. There is also the possibility Youngkin could decide to sit out a term and run for governor again. When asked, the governor denies the claims, saying he is not looking ahead to future opportunities, but is focusing on Virginia for the time being. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Trump Visits Iowa While 2028 Republicans Wait for Their Chance
President Donald Trump's visit to Iowa on Thursday is ostensibly to kick off a yearlong celebration leading up to America's 250th anniversary. But his trip also casts a spotlight on the intense dynamics of his nascent second term as well as questions over who will barnstorm the critical state come 2028 as his successor. Trump's trip is his first to the Hawkeye State since returning to office. In early 2024, he dominated its caucuses, charting the course that vanquished Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' ambitions to assume the GOP mantel and took back the White House.

President Donald Trump will speak at the Iowa fairgrounds tonight. Here's what to know:
Republican President Donald Trump is set to arrive at the Iowa State Fairgrounds later tonight for a rally kicking off the one-year countdown to America's 250th birthday. Programming is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., and Trump is scheduled to begin speaking at 7:30 p.m. July 3. The event will be held at the fairgrounds. Iowa's Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds and Lt. Gov. Chris Cournoyer are scheduled to attend, and many of Iowa's other top GOP brass are likely to be on site. It marks Trump's first visit to the first-in-the-nation GOP caucus state since his return to the White House. Trump last attended the Iowa State Fair in August 2023 in the leadup to Iowa's 2024 Republican presidential caucuses. Trump won the 2024 caucuses with a historically large margin. And Iowa again delivered him a victory in November as he campaigned against Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris in the general election. "Iowa voted for me THREE TIMES, because they love my Policies for our Wonderful Farmers and Small Businesses, and they LOVE AMERICA!" Trump wrote in a social media post announcing the event. "This will be a very special event, honoring our Great Country, and our Brave Heroes who fought to keep us FREE." The event is free and open to the public, but attendees should reserve tickets online at There is a limit of two tickets per mobile phone number. Trump arrives at a busy time politically as Congress weighs a major tax cuts and spending package Trump has dubbed the "big, beautiful bill;" as a major tariff deadline looms; and mid the fallout of the U.S. bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities. His visit also comes as Iowa's 2026 election field takes shape. Republican Attorney General Brenna Bird, who was an early and high-profile endorser of Trump's 2024 caucus campaign, announced July 2 she would not run for governor. She was thought to be a strong contender to earn Republican President Donald Trump's endorsement in the race. Without Bird in the race, Trump could look to lend his support to one of the other candidates currently vying for the GOP nomination. Planning for America's 250th birthday party started nearly nine years ago by an act of Congress, when the 2016 U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission Act was passed. It established a commission to plan for the observance and commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding, charged with overseeing related celebrations ranging from the local- and state-level to national and international spheres. More: Get ready for more 250th birthday parties: Next year marks the semiquincentennial Trump also issued an executive order Jan. 29 establishing a White House Task Force on "Celebrating America's 250th Birthday," charged with providing "a grand celebration" marking the July 4 anniversary. America250, the nonprofit arm of the effort, is hosting Trump's appearance in Des Moines. "On July 4, 2026, our nation will commemorate and celebrate the 250th anniversary, of the signing of the Declaration of Independence," the group says on its website. "The journey toward this historic milestone is an opportunity to pause and reflect on our nation's past, honor the contributions of all Americans, and look ahead toward the future we want to create for the next generation and beyond." Buttigieg gives a strident anti-Trump message in Iowa and shows signs that he's grown up
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Pete Buttigieg returned to Iowa on Tuesday with some subtle and not-so-subtle messages about what's changed since he ran in the state's 2020 Democratic presidential caucuses. His speech included mentions of his adopted twins, a boy and a girl, and how he explained to his daughter the different nicknames for the American flag. He talked of flying into the Cedar Rapids airport after visiting while transportation secretary to oversee the facility's expansion. And having left the state in 2020 as a youthful, baby-faced candidate not quite 40 years old, Buttigieg on Tuesday was sporting a burgeoning beard.

Flags in Iowa to return to full-staff after honoring former President Jimmy Carter
Tuesday is the last day flags will be at half-staff in Iowa after nearly an entire month of honoring former President Jimmy Carter. Why are flags at half-staff in Iowa? Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered all flags in Iowa to be lowered starting on Dec. 30, a day after the former president and World War II veteran died at the age of 100. Carter was the 39th president of the United States, serving from 1977 to 1981. U.S. Code specifies that flags should fly at half-staff for 30 days after the death of a former president. Reynolds, along with other Republican governors, ordered all flags to be raised for Jan. 20 in honor of President Donald Trump's inauguration. Flags at Iowa state buildings returned to half-staff starting Jan. 21 and were ordered to remain down until sunset on Jan. 28, according to the governor's office. More:Why Jimmy Carter has a special place in Iowa lore: How he created the Iowa Caucus playbook What's the difference between half-mast and half-staff for flags? Half-mast is used when the flag is flown from a flagpole, typically referring to a ship mast or similar structures, according to Federal Flags. Half-mast means the flag is flown two-thirds up between the top and bottom of the flagstaff. Half-staff is the term used for flags on land, particularly in the United States. Half-staff describes a flag that is raised halfway, between the top and bottom of the flagpole. When the American flag is flown at half-staff, it conveys a message of respect and mourning. Federal Flags says this custom is most often observed following the death of a government official, military personnel or in response to a national tragedy.
