Man last got new furniture in 1988. Now big Powerball win means he'll get more
A man from Iowa won a huge lottery prize after he chose to pick his own Powerball numbers. William Rogers, of West Des Moines, said his wife likes when he lets the computer pick his lottery numbers, but he decided he wanted to pick his own this time, according to a July 3 news release from the Iowa Lottery. 'She prefers if I go and let the computer pick it,' Rogers told lottery officials. 'She always knows when I pick the numbers because she recognizes some. Now I don't think she'll ever, ever say, 'Don't you pick it!' because I picked all these and I got five out of six.' Rogers played the Powerball for the July 2 drawing and added a Power Play, which doubled his winnings to $100,000. He checked his ticket while he and his wife drank coffee and said he was left in shock. 'Obviously, my eyes got big,' Rogers said. 'They widened up. I couldn't believe it and had to look at it multiple times to be sure.' Rogers and his wife discussed what they wanted to do with the prize money. He said the last time they bought new furniture was in 1988, so they plan to buy more, as well as save for the future. 'We're not going to go out and blow it,' he told lottery officials. 'That's just how our lifestyle has been.' The winning numbers were 7-19-21-54-63 and Powerball 21. No one won the jackpot, and it now stands at roughly $190 million for the July 5 drawing. What to know about Powerball To score the jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball. The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338. Trucker who ‘never' buys scratch-offs tries luck on ticket. It leaves him frozen
Hunger got the best of a 26-year-old Iowa man, who stopped at a grocery store to purchase food. And with that purchase, he went out of his comfort zone when he bought an Iowa Lottery scratch-off ticket. 'To be honest, I never buy scratch-off tickets,' Marco Gonzalez-Saurez told lottery officials in a June 30 news release. 'Something just said, 'Hey, why don't I just buy one.'' He picked the 'Feeling Lucky?' scratch-off ticket from a Hy-Vee in Windsor Heights, then went home to see if he won. What he saw — a $150,000 windfall — left him in disbelief 'I just kind of froze, like, 'No way!'' Gonzalez-Suarez told lottery officials. 'Honestly, I didn't believe it. It didn't seem real.' It wasn't until he scanned the ticket on the lottery app that his win began to feel real, he said. Now, the truck driver from West Des Moines hopes to use the money toward 'a fun purchase or two' and invest the rest. The 'Feeling Lucky?' game costs $10 to play. Odds of winning the $150,000 jackpot prize are 1 in 144,850. Windsor Heights is a western suburb of Des Moines.

Woman shows co-worker winning Iowa lottery ticket — and his ‘jaw drops'
An Iowa woman and her co-worker were left stunned when they saw how much her winning lottery ticket was worth. Tonya Flenker, 49, bought the $10 'Hot Ticket Progressive' InstaPlay game while on break from her overnight work shift at Walmart, according to a news release from the Iowa Lottery. After seeing the winning numbers, she ran back inside to show her co-worker the ticket. 'He gets his phone out and scans it, and his jaw drops. It's like, 'What?! I can't believe it!'' she told lottery officials when claiming her prize June 18. 'I thought I was going to pass out. It's crazy.' She won the game's $52,838 jackpot, according to the lottery. The game starts out with a $10,000 jackpot and continues to climb until it's won. Flenker said once the win was posted on social media by the Iowa Lottery, the cat was out of the bag. 'People saw the post on Facebook, and then everybody in town started sharing it, and it got around,' she said. 'Some have it figured out, I think.' She said she plans to invest her winnings. 'I'd like to invest it in some way, whether that's putting it toward a little piece of property, or just do something to make some money and keep it going,' she said. 'Something to have and look at and be proud of and watch it grow. I'm just not quite sure what yet.'
