HK Director Alfred Cheung Praises Ipoh Hor Fun: 'It's Worth Flying There To Eat!'
It's no surprise that many Hong Kong celebrities who have visited Malaysia fall in love with the local cuisine. Director Alfred Cheung (张坚庭) is one of those stars, and he recently shared his newfound love for Ipoh Chicken Hor Fun.
The 69-year-old was recently in Ipoh, Perak, to undergo medical treatment. While in the city, Alfred visited a few local eateries for a simple food tour. The director then shared his experience through a Facebook post. According to the post, amongst the dishes Alfred had while in Ipoh were kaya toast and Ipoh white coffee, which he described as a 'richer Hong Kong-style afternoon tea'.
However, it was the Ipoh Chicken Hor Fun, or rice noodles, at Cowan Street that stole the director's heart. In his post, Alfred praised the dish, saying, 'Ipoh Hor Fun is the best Cantonese food I've tried in decades. I used to think that Guangzhao shahefen was the best rice noodle. But after trying Ipoh's Hor Fun, the rest are just concubines.' The public figure also described the noodles as 'white, smooth, tender and full of rice flavour'.
As for why the noodles in Ipoh tasted better, Alfred theorised that it was because of the water quality in the city. Funnily, Alfred also joked that the water is the reason for all the beautiful women in Ipoh, including actress Michelle Yeoh. Besides Ipoh Hor Fun, the director also tried the classic chicken rice, which he also heavily praised. At the end of his post, Alfred recommended Ipoh as a place 'worth flying there to eat'.
Interestingly, Alfred is no stranger to showing his love for Malaysia. During his visit to KL earlier this May, the 69-year-old was impressed by the cleanliness of the public areas, notably the public restrooms. He also noted that Malaysia seemed like a great place for a second home, particularly for Hong Kong citizens. These two posts garnered attention from locals, who thanked Alfred for his continued praise of Malaysia.
We're glad that Alfred had another great experience while in Malaysia. Perhaps he can continue his food tour in other states and cities the next time he visits.
