Woman accused of forcing daughter into sex work

IPOH: A single mother was charged at the Ipoh Sessions Court yesterday for allegedly trafficking her daughter. The 44-year-old accused is alleged to have committed the offence at a house in Taman Sentosa 2, Sitiawan, between Sept 4, last year and June 7 this year, Sinar Harian reported. She allegedly trafficked her 21-year-old daughter for the purpose of exploitation by using force to compel her into working as a sex worker. The offence falls under Section 12 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Atipsom) Act 2007, which carries a maximum penalty of 20-year imprisonment and a fine. In addition, the unemployed accused faces another charge under Section 14 of the same Act. She was accused of having trafficked her daughter while she was still a minor, aged 17 in 2022, for the purpose of sexual exploitation, committed at the same address between 2022 and Sept 3, 2023. The offence is punishable by life imprisonment or a minimum jail term of five years, and whipping. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty and claimed trial to both charges before Judge Azizah Ahmad.

Duo accused of throwing Molotov cocktails at homes in Ipoh and Kampar IPOH: Two loan shark runners have been charged with five offences for engaging in mischief involving fire and Molotov cocktails, both here and in Kampar. Kok Wan Liang, 37, and Lin Jia He, 26, from Taiwan, were jointly charged under Section 436 of the Penal Code at two separate Sessions Court hearings here yesterday. Kok, a dispatch rider, pleaded guilty, while Lin, unemployed, claimed trial to all the charges. At the court of Session judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad, both accused were charged with throwing two Molotov cocktails containing petrol with the intent of causing destruction at a house in Taman Bandar Baru in Kampar on April 10 at about 4.20am. In the second charge, they were accused of throwing the highly volatile item into the compound of a house in Kampung Baru Kuala Kuang on the same day at 2.50am. Lin was also charged separately for committing the act at a house in Panorama Lapangan Perdana on March 25 at 12.58pm. Ainul granted bail to both accused, instructing Lin and Kok to pay a total of RM15,000 and RM10,000, respectively. The court also ordered Lin's bail to be paid by a Malaysian and fixed July 23 for the next mention. Deputy public prosecutor RS Vitthiyeswary prosecuted. At a separate court presided over by judge Azizah Ahmad, both Kok and Lin were jointly charged for throwing Molotov cocktails into the compound of a house in Panorama Lapangan Perdana on April 2 and 4. They were also charged with causing a disaster by fire, which was framed under Section 436 of the same Act, at a house in Taman Bandar Baru, Kampar, on April 8 at about 12.30am. In addition, the two accused were charged under Section 29(1)(e) of the Animal Welfare Act for causing unnecessary suffering to an 11-year-old Rottweiler, belonging to the house owner, during the incident on April 2. Lin claimed trial while Kok pleaded guilty to all the charges. Azizah set bail at RM15,000 for Lin with one surety, while Kok was denied bail. She also ordered Lin's passport to be surrendered to the court until the cases are completed and fixed July 23 for the next mention. Deputy public prosecutor NM Moganaraj Mithra prosecuted.

IPOH, May 2 — Two men were reportedly charged in the Ipoh Sessions Court today over a series of Molotov cocktail attacks on houses here and in Kampar. According to The Star, delivery rider Kok Wan Liang, 37, and Taiwanese national Lin Jia He, 26, face multiple arson charges for allegedly attacking properties in Taman Bandar Baru and Kampung Baru Kuala Kuang, Kampar, on April 10. In addition, Lin alone faces a separate charge for a similar attack at Panorama Lapangan Perdana, Ipoh, on March 25. Before judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad, Kok reportedly pleaded guilty to all charges while Lin claimed trial. Bail was set at RM10,000 for Kok and RM15,000 for Lin, with Lin's surety required to be a Malaysian. Later, before judge Azizah Ahmad, both men were jointly charged with three more Molotov cocktail attacks — at Panorama Lapangan Perdana on April 2 and 4, and in Kampar on April 8. They also reportedly faced an additional charge under the Animal Welfare Act for allegedly causing unnecessary suffering to a Rottweiler during the April 2 incident. Kok again pleaded guilty to the charges, while Lin maintained his not guilty plea. Judge Azizah denied Kok bail, ordered Lin to surrender his passport, and set the next hearing for July 23.
