Umhlanga Ski Boat Club brings early Christmas cheer
IT is a mid-year celebration that invokes Christmas traditions and spirit of giving and it has become a hit on the Umhlanga Ski-Boat Club's calendar. They recently held a Christmas in July party for residents from The Association for the Aged (TAFTA) John Conradie House. Residents were treated to live music, dance performances, a meal and gift bags. Irene Chetty, the wellness activity co-ordinator for TAFTA John Conradie House said the event was a treat for every resident who participated. 'This year we had 80 residents from the home join the festivities at the ski-boat club. We are so blessed to be spoiled by them and having it twice a year it really is a treat for the residents. They so look forward to this event that they start enquiring at the beginning of the year. Some of the residents who joined us are here for the first time and they absolutely love being spoiled,' she said. One of the organisers and member of the ski-boat club, Rene Pheasant, explained they had hosted residents at their club house for the last decade. 'In all this is the 14th year we've hosted residents from TAFTA and it is our way to spoil everyone. This celebration is as a result of a Good Samaritan, who used to live in uMhlanga, who made this all possible. The responses from them have been heartwarming and really we want the residents to know we care. It's just inspiring to see how grateful our members are and the volunteers who've made the day a resounding success,' Pheasant said. No Name Programme brings much-needed restoration to ward 64
No Name Programme brings much-needed restoration to ward 64 THE South Durban Basin Area Based Management (SDB-ABM) and various departments of the municipality effectively implemented the No Name Programme in ward 64 recently. The programme was intended to address backlogs in service delivery and enforce compliance among residential and commercial premises. Also read: South Durban Basin hosts successful business workshop for unemployed youth in ward 64 Irene Chetty, co-ordinator and facilitator of the exercise for SDB-ABM, praised the dedication of all the participating departments and said that despite the poor weather each team persevered and performed their tasks. 'The primary goal of the programme is to provide a safer and compliant environment for the residents and business,' Chetty said. In the course of the two-day operation, stakeholders acted fast to clear a number of longstanding issues. 'Business-to-business checks for compliance were made with respect to fire safety, environmental regulations, town planning, building maintenance and unauthorised water connections, which were inspected and verified. The parks department resolved several matters related to tree removal and unmown grass, clearing outstanding work in the district. Road and storm water crews addressed road markings, as well as blocked and damaged drains,' said Chetty. Electricity services fixed the majority of streetlights that were not functioning, and a total of 120 poles were restored. Metro Police checked for motorist compliance in order to preserve road safety and legal standards, and vector control teams sprayed pesticide and conducted drainage maintenance in order to improve public health and safety. 'We are extremely proud to say we have seen a huge difference in this ward,' Chetty added. 'We would like to thank all the people and stakeholders who were responsible in making this programme a success. The effort over a period of a few days was just incredible.' No Name Programme is a good example of what can be done through inter-departmental co-operation. For more Southlands Sun news, follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
