Enniskillen Royal Boat Club gears up for glory at Irish Rowing Championships
Enniskillen Royal Boat Club (ERBC) returns to the Irish Rowing Championships in Cork this weekend from July 11-13 with high expectations and strong crews across all junior levels. The prestigious regatta takes place at the National Rowing Centre in Cork, where ERBC has a proud tradition of success. Eyes on the prize: Junior 18 Eights The blue riband Junior 18 Boys' and Girls' Eights are very much in focus for ERBC, especially the Boys' crew, who are determined to reclaim the national title after narrowly missing out last year. The Boys' J18 8+ line-up features a powerful combination of returning talent and new determination: Evan Donaghy, Ryan Topping, Luke Bailey, Austin Cassidy, Andrew Cuthbertson, Christian Timoney, Lorcan Sreenivasan, William Bogle, and cox Abbey Wilson. The Girls' J18 8+ will also be in medal contention and looking to repeat last year's win, boasting a well-drilled and experienced crew: Kate Huddlestone, Isabella Wright, Naomi Robinson, Rhea Cartin McCloskey, Zara Welsh, Emily Black, Ruby Hamill, Eva Johnston, and cox Jessica Thompson. Depth at Junior level In addition to their flagship eights, ERBC will field multiple crews across the J16 Boys and Girls categories, including entries in Eights, Fours, Doubles, and Single sculls. With a large contingent of athletes competing over the three-day regatta, the club is showcasing its depth and commitment to youth development, especially after such a strong showing at last week's 1K Classic. Star power in the Senior Eights One of the highlights of the weekend will be the Men's Senior Eights, where ERBC is part of a star-studded composite crew. Olympians Nathan Timoney and Ross Corrigan make a highly-anticipated return to domestic competition, representing their club alongside emerging talent. Notably, six members of the J18 Boys' Eight will join them in the Senior boat, including Nathan's younger brother, Christian Timoney, offering a unique blend of youth and experience. This will be the first time that ERBC have entered the Senior Eights category and they will face tough competition from the university crews. Coach's outlook Head coach Derek Holland expressed pride in the preparation and resilience of his athletes heading into the championships. 'All the hard work is done, but as always the level of competition will be of the highest standard. We are looking forward to the challenge.' With a packed schedule and fierce competition expected across all categories, ERBC aims to continue its legacy of excellence at the National Rowing Centre this weekend.
