'They're looking for possibilities beyond the horizon': the Iron Men 20 years on
For twenty years, they've stood motionless on the sand - yet still, they manage to surprise. Today (July 1) marks two decades since Antony Gormley's 'Another Place' was first installed on Crosby Beach, and in that time the Iron Men have become part of the Sefton coastline's soul. To mark the milestone, the ECHO asked visitors on the beach what the statues mean to them - whether they've known them for years, or are meeting them for the very first time. Avis Mayo had travelled all the way from New Zealand to visit the site, where 100 cast-iron figures are dotted along three kilometres of beach and into the sea. 'They're amazing really,' she said, looking out across the sands. 'The fact that they can remain standing for that long and not have been washed away is incredible.' Some residents felt they were haunting or unwelcome; others grew attached. Ultimately, the statues stayed. Jill Chesworth, who now lives locally, remembers the early days well: 'When they arrived, they were supposed to be temporary. I have friends around here who were pleased when they were made permanent.' Neil Sanford, visiting from Allerton, was surprised to learn the statues had already reached their 20th birthday. He said: 'I didn't think it was as long as that. I thought it had been about 10 years," adding: 'The windmills in the distance are an amazing backdrop.' For others, the figures still retain an eerie allure. 'They're deceptive,' said Matthew Wright, standing on the sand. 'You look at them and you think they're going to move.' He'd been wondering about their meaning, too. He suggested they're 'looking out for possibilities beyond the horizon - or thinking about where humans came from and they want to return to the sea," before joking: 'Or they might be looking for their next home in Wales.' The statues have become a symbol of Merseyside's northern coast, with their quiet watchfulness offering something different to each visitor. Vereena Jones, who was visiting from elsewhere in the UK, admitted she was seeing them for the first time despite several trips to the region. She said: 'There's more of them than I knew. 'I've never got to see them, even though I've been here [Merseyside] several times.' Another Place has weathered time and tide - but 20 years on, it seems the Iron Men are going nowhere. Still staring out to sea. Still stirring something in everyone who visits them.

Comment Knocks Nick Castellanos Out of Phillies' Lineup For First Time Since 2023
Comment Knocks Nick Castellanos Out of Phillies' Lineup For First Time Since 2023 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There's both good and bad news with the Tuesday night Philadelphia lineup. First, the good. Second baseman Bryson Stott is back in after having a scare in the 9th inning of Monday's game at the Miami Marlins. Stott tweaked his right elbow - the same one he had a nerve injury in last year - but did not exit the game. Advertisement Yet while one regular won't miss the start of tonight's game, another one will - and it's truly a rare sign to see. Nick Castellanos started every single game in 2024 and hadn't missed one yet this season, but he will sit out Tuesday after making a comment that manager Rob Thomson deemed inappropriate yesterday. Casty was pulled for a defensive replacement in the bottom of the 8th. Castellanos was one of only four 'Iron Men' in all of MLB last season, along with Matt Olson and Marcell Ozuna of the Atlanta Braves and Pete Alonso of the New York Mets. Nick is slashing .278/.321/.425 with seven home runs, 17 doubles, and 36 RBI so far this season. He's also been out in right field for all but three games to this point; he was the designated hitter in those exceptions. Nick Castellanos has not missed a start since September 30, 2023 - 236 games Hamilton-Imagn Images With Casty on the bench, the surging Max Kepler is in his old spot out in right field. Kepler, who made the primary transition to left after joining Philly, is hitting. 333 in his last seven games with two doubles and three home runs. Brandon Marsh is in left while Johan Rojas makes his first start in center field since last Wednesday. Brett Favre's heartfelt reaction to Vikings legend Jim Marshall's passing
The post Brett Favre's heartfelt reaction to Vikings legend Jim Marshall's passing appeared first on ClutchPoints. Jim Marshall left a massive imprint on the football world, embodying the toughness and ferocity that defined the sport for so many decades. His legacy is especially powerful for those who have represented or rooted for the Minnesota Vikings. Current and former members of the organization sent their condolences following Marshall's passing on Tuesday. Advertisement Brett Favre, who donned the Purple and Gold for the last two years of his Hall of Fame career, can understand what it means to withstand grueling punishment year after year for the love of the game. He also knows what this man meant to The Gopher State. The Super Bowl-winning quarterback shared some kind words and reflected on No. 70's enduring impact. 'Man, I'll never forget the day I got to meet Jim Marshall — one of the true original Iron Men of the NFL,' Favre posted on X. 'Tough as nails, played 282 consecutive games as a defensive end… in an era when the game was as gritty and raw as it gets. 'Growing up watching guys like Jim, I learned what it meant to show up every single Sunday, no matter what. To have had the chance to shake his hand — and even play in front of him — was a real honor. 'Guys like Jim paved the way. They didn't ask for attention, they earned respect with every snap. I tried to bring that same mindset to the field every week. My condolences go out to him and his family — but he's certainly a legend among legends.' What Jim Marshall gave to the Vikings and their endlessly loyal fans Marshall's 270 consecutive starts rank only behind Favre's 297. The longtime defensive end congratulated the gunslinger in person for breaking his record, for he knows the physical and mental sacrifice required to post such an astonishing attendance record. Though, Marshall did far more than simply show up. Advertisement The No. 44 overall pick in the 1960 NFL Draft played 19 of his 20 seasons with Minnesota (began career with Cleveland Browns) and was a pivotal member of the iconic Purple People Eaters defense, which also consisted of Alan Page, Carl Eller and Gary Larsen. Marshall served a vital role during what is still the greatest era of Vikings football, helping the team reach the Super Bowl four separate times. Unfortunately, the team and community are still waiting for their first Lombardi Trophy. When impatience rises throughout Minneapolis, it is good to revisit or learn about the prosperous 1970s. Jim Marshall, who died at the age of 87 after a lengthy stay in the hospital, is responsible for so many of those memories. Yes, he also produced many chuckles via his infamous 'Wrong Way Run' in 1964, but the two-time Pro Bowl selection helped set the stage for the defensive warriors who have come after him, just as Favre noted. Marshall recorded 130.5 unofficial sacks (was not counted as a stat until 1982) and 29 opponent fumble recoveries in his storied NFL career. More than the numbers he accumulated, however, he breathed life into the Minnesota Vikings. The beloved captain was an inaugural member of the franchise and stayed connected to the team well after his retirement. He inspired Brett Favre and so many others, and by the sound of it, they will do their part to make sure his invaluable contributions are properly recognized moving forward.
