Isaak Phillips signs two-year contract with Winnipeg Jets, eyes NHL roster spot
Isaak Phillips signs two-year contract with Winnipeg Jets, eyes NHL roster spot (Image Via Twitter) The Winnipeg Jets, a couple of days ago, made a firm step toward down defense with a two-year contract for Isaak Phillips. With the defenceman recently acquired in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks, this signing will give the youngster a fresh start. This reflects Winnipeg's continued emphasis on developing its defense depth, as well as having roster tests on the horizon with the impending season in the NHL. Two-year contract begins defense race for Isaak Phillips with Winnipeg Jets The Winnipeg Jets have officially signed Isaak Phillips, a 23-year-old defenseman from Barrie, Ontario, to a two-year, two-way contract. This signing follows Phillips' trade from the Chicago Blackhawks, where he was exchanged for prospect Dmitry Kuzmin. Being a two-way contract means that either Phillips or the team could transfer the contract to the minor level, which permits the player to stay freely between the NHL and AHL without waiver implications, a very useful thing for any team developing. A contract arrangement that enables Phillips to earn $813,000 if playing at the NHL level, with an average salary of $388,000 during his AHL stint with the Manitoba Moose. That way, the Jets, scarce on roster spots with layers on defense, may be able to gain an opportunity to call upon Phillips in the event of injury or drops in performance during the season. Phillips brings with him NHL and AHL seasoning, having played a handful of sporadic games with the Blackhawks over the past four years. Last year, he scored one goal in three NHL games, and he now has two goals and 12 points in 56 NHL contests. He has some reputation as a physical defenceman with size, and during the same time span, he has also racked up 31 penalty minutes. An AHL record highlights a steady development. Phillips tallied eight points in 28 games with Rockford last season before traveling to the Moose, where he added eight more points in 39 games, including three goals. In his 238-game veteran minor league career, he has tallied 26 goals, 87 points, and 234 penalty minutes. With training camp soon to begin, Phillips will have to fight for his spot on the Jets' highly contested defensive depth chart. Right now, the No. 8 position is open, and there will certainly be a few young defensemen fighting for a chance to take NHL minutes. Also Read: Anthony Stolarz may be closing in on a massive extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs Isaak Phillips' signing goes beyond serving roster depth; there is a belief in his potential to develop long-term. Now all eyes will remain on the young defenseman, adjusting to the Jets system, and whether he can parlay his two-way deal into a full-time role on Winnipeg's blue line.
