Anshul Kamboj's experience will serve him well: Ishant and Bhuvneshwar

Anshul Kamboj's toil in first-class cricket should hold the Haryana seamer in good stead, said senior India pacers Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar here on Thursday, after the 24-year-old was handed his debut for the fourth Test against England at Manchester. Kamboj, who was a part of the India A squad before the five-Test series began, was called in after fast bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep were sidelined from the Manchester Test due to injuries. He will do well since he has done well in First-Class cricket, and anyone who has had a good run in First-Class cricket is bound to do well for the team too, Ishant told PTI Videos on the sidelines of a Pickle Pros event. People say it is easy to take wickets in First-Class cricket, but it is really not, he added. Bhuvneshwar warned Kamboj to not get bogged down under pressure in his maiden game for India. I hope he does well because the debut match is always special and there is pressure on you as well, so I hope he doesn't succumb to the pressure of a debut match, Bhuvneshwar said. If he does well, then it will hold him in good stead, but of course, he is a very good bowler, he did well in domestic cricket and the IPL, so I wish him luck, the ace swing bowler added. Ishant said losing Rishabh Pant for the remainder of the series would be a big blow even as the India vice-captain came out to bat in the first session with a fractured foot. It is a big blow for India if a player like him is out for (up to) six weeks but (if) you see, sports is something where you are replaceable, because a sport always moves on, your team struggles for a little while but the sport goes on, Ishant said. He continued, Earlier it was Sachin Tendulkar, then Virat Kohli, and after that someone else (time) will come so while it is a big setback, injuries are part and parcel of sports." But the silver lining is that it will now give an opportunity to some other player to perform, so now it is all about taking opportunities and grabbing them and doing well for the team. Bhuvneshwar said, It is a big setback with the kind of player (that) he is. He can change the game any time when he is in the team but injury happens, they are unfortunate, but you can't stop them so I wish him a speedy recovery." Ishant, meanwhile, said experience of captaining will make Shubman Gill better and better. He is doing well. He is young and the more Test matches he will get under his belt, the more he will learn about the ins and outs of captaincy, he said. It is a new role and job for him which is not an easy one so everyone should support him. Bhuvneshwar said Mohammed Siraj's bowling workload hasn't been discussed in the media enough but he is a bowling machine for the national side. The onus is on the media to talk about it as well, if you guys talk or write about him, then it will be nice, Bhuvneshwar said. But the kind of performances Siraj has been dishing out for as many years (that) he has been playing for India he is indeed turning out to be a bowling machine for the team so yes I believe he should be appreciated more, he added. On this day in 2014: India pulled off their first Test win at Lord's since 1986

India successfully defended the target of 319 on a challenging Lord's track that offered seamers significant seam movement up front and uneven bounce as the strip dried later on. India ended a painstaking 28-year-long wait for a Test victory at Lord's and pulled off one of their finest triumphs on away soil on this day. In a remarkable performance by the then skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's young, in-transition brigade, they upstaged England at the end of a memorable five-day contest at the Home of Cricket. India successfully defended the target of 319 on a challenging Lord's track that offered seamers significant seam movement up front and uneven bounce as the strip dried later on. Under pressure after his team missed out on similar wins at Johannesburg and Wellington earlier that season, Dhoni needed his bowlers to come to the rescue and as always, his tried-and-trusted workhorse Ishant Sharma put his hand up. Ishant produced arguably his finest spell in Test cricket on a gloomy afternoon at Lord's, finishing with astonishing figures of 7 for 74 to help dismiss England for 223. In an inspired burst, Ishant used his height to great advantage as he broke past a gritty fifth wicket stand between Joe Root and Moeen Ali by getting Moeen to fend off a bouncer to short leg and opened the gates for a bizarre English collapse after lunch. One after the other, the Englishmen kept trying to pull and hook Ishant's well-directed bouncers and were out caught in the deep. Ishant went from 'Unlucky Ishant' to the game-changer for Dhoni and left India on the brink of their first victory at Lord's since 1986. Left-armer Ravindra Jadeja then got No.11 James Anderson run-out to close off the contest and usher in the most memorable celebrations for the visitors, who took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series after entering the 2014 tour as massive second favourites. Apart from Ishant, ace swing bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar also stood up to the challenge by taking an instrumental 6 for 82 in the first-innings, where the Indians kept England's lead down to only 24 after Ajinkya Rahane's most courageous 103 had taken the tourists to 295 all out on Day 1. In the third-innings, the in-form Murali Vijay top-scored with a 95 while Bhuvneshwar (52) and Jadeja (68) produced invaluable half-centuries to extend the target past the 300 mark. On a surface designed for English seamers to dominate and hammer the visitors, they turned the tables on them with a spirited performance that will be remembered forever fondly. view comments First Published: July 21, 2025, 07:30 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. India batters inexperienced, but technically no sitting ducks

I stumbled on the itinerary of the Indian team's 1952 tour to England. It began in early May with two months of 'warm up' matches (tour games) before India played the first of their four Test matches in July. India played a total of 29 matches on that trip! Those were obviously different times when national teams had a lot of free time, India even more, as it was an emerging Test nation. Now India are like business tycoons with a packed itinerary and not a day to spare, and within these constraints Indian cricket does its best to give overseas Test cricket the due diligence it commands. To expect more commitment than this would be unreasonable, so now it's a week in advance at the most and a couple of 'friendly' matches before India play their first Test on a foreign tour. Because Indian players go to England and Australia a lot now it's more a matter of getting reacquainted with conditions for players. With very few first-class games before the first Test, modern players make the mistakes they would have made in the warmup games in the actual Test match; it's learning in the job kind of situation. In England, to put it simply, it's just two primary adjustments that players have to make. Batters need to play close to the body and refrain from hitting through the line when not to the pitch of the ball, which means they have to do exactly the opposite of what they were doing for the last two months in IPL. And yes, leave deliveries outside off. Anyone who can't do these two things will have a miserable tour of England. There is no getting around this fact. Remember Virat Kohli's success in 2018, it was only because of the number of balls he left outside off that he emerged as the highest scorer from both sides by far. I saw KL Rahul practicing this a lot in the nets while facing Bumrah two days back. He was in a sense getting reacquainted. Karun Nair will have to focus on this the most, from the possible top five he has a tendency to play loose armed on the up, as a natural reaction to a good length ball. India are fortunate to have Jaiswal, Rahul, Pant, Sudharsan, Jadeja and even Nitish Reddy who despite being modern day products of the T20 world can play close to the body and leave balls outside off. This batting line-up may be inexperienced, but technically they aren't sitting ducks. We think life for bowlers is easier when it comes to adjusting, all they have to do is keep pegging away outside off. Sure, line is important but length is more so. Getting fuller into an area where a batter is forced to get onto the front foot and get tempted to drive or push is the length that will make you a star bowler in England. Because of the flat nature and low bounce on our pitches Indian seamers tend to naturally bowl a bit shorter. In England though, this Indian length will make you an 'unlucky Ishant'. Remember Ishant always beating the bat but never getting the edge? That was because of the length. Prasidh especially would have to work on this as his natural length is much shorter. Interestingly again, this short length is what made him a runaway success in IPL. As we can see T20 cricket and Test cricket are constantly working against each other when it comes to skill development, what's needed to excel in T20s will be the cause for your downfall in Tests. It's amazing that there are still a few players in the world who excel in both formats simultaneously, these are your modern greats! England under Stokes is a different team. Stokes as captain makes his team much harder to beat. His captaincy is all about getting under the skin of the opposition players, like designer clothes he has specially designed plans for every opposition player. And when he spots a weakness in a batter, he does not subtly attack it but goes all guns blazing at it. Like when he wants to get a batter out who is weak on the short ball, he will have six fielders placed on the leg side. He won't bother with slips then because he has put all his eggs in one basket. I believe Stokes' captaincy is a major attraction of this series, he makes Test cricket more watchable only by his captaincy. He may be a bit blindsided this time though as there are quite a few Indian players he won't have a read on. England will still start as firm favourites, but India could be dangerous for they will be free spirited. Two senior batters woefully out of form and rock bottom on self-confidence won't be casting their dark shadows on the team anymore, and coach Gambhir especially may be relieved by this.

Watch: Gujarat Titans Players Recommend What To Eat In Delhi

With the Indian Premier League in full swing, every cricket fan in India is glued to their screens. But today (May 18) is extra special as Gujarat Titans, led by Shubman Gill, are all set to face off against Delhi Capitals, captained by Axar Patel. The match will be held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Ahead of the big game, a fun video was shared on the official Instagram handle of Gujarat Titans. It shows the players boarding a flight to Delhi. But before takeoff, someone behind the camera throws in a delicious question: 'What is one thing you would recommend to eat in Delhi?' Let's take a look at what the players had to say! Ishant Sharma didn't hesitate and said, chole bhature. Ashish Nehra, the coach, went for golgappe, and couldn't resist teasing Ishant by saying, ' Akele ja raha hai chole bhature khane, hume leke bhi nahi jaa raha. [Going to eat chole bhature alone, not even taking me along.]' Sai Kishore agreed with Ishant and picked chole bhature too. Rehmatullah Gurbaz recommended the flavourful palak patta chaat. Mahipal Lomror joined the chole bhature club with his own nod to the popular dish. Anuj Rawat opted for the classic Delhi street food – chole kulche. Mohammed Siraj leaned more towards the meaty side and recommended nalli nihari and biryani. Cricketer Shahrukh Khan (not the actor!) said, 'One restaurant that I would recommend to everybody is Bukhara in ITC.' Skipper Shubman Gill also joined the Bukhara fan club, saying, 'One dish that I would recommend to eat in Delhi is the dal from Bukhara restaurant.' Washington Sundar picked a comforting classic – kadhi chawal. Sai Sudharsan echoed the same and picked Bukhara's dal as the best dish in the capital. Karim Janat said the tandoori raan at Karim's is a must-try. He also mentioned the ice golas near India Gate, which he thinks are really good. Gurnoor Brar added his voice to the chole bhature fanfare as well. Kagiso Rabada also gave a shoutout to Bukhara as a must-visit food spot. Rashid Khan couldn't pick just one place – he recommended both Karim's and Bukhara as the best food stops in Delhi. 'Admin's food plans are fully sorted in Delhi, thanks to our Titans!' read the text attached to the post.
