Former Land Minister Nobuteru Ishihara Leaves Politics
News from Japan Jun 25, 2025 18:13 (JST) Tokyo, June 25 (Jiji Press)--Former Japanese land minister Nobuteru Ishihara has announced his retirement from politics. "I've decided to retreat from the front line and observe politics from outside," Ishihara, 68, said on television on Monday. Ishihara, who lost his seat in the 2021 House of Representatives election, sought to run in the House of Councillors election next month, but he failed to secure the official endorsement of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. Ishihara was first elected to the Lower House in 1990. He has since served in key government and party posts, including secretary-general of the LDP. He ran in two LDP leadership elections but was defeated both times. END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.] Jiji Press

Lumines Arise combines that addictive puzzling flow with a killer soundtrack
After a symphony, online multiplayer and a remaster, the well-regarded (and often handheld) puzzler Lumines is getting Enhance's full synesthetic, Tetris-flowing, treatment. Lumines Arise is almost here. If you haven't played the game before, Lumines' premise centers on rotating and dropping four-square blocks made of one or two colors, building up larger squares of a single color. The game's timeline sweeps across the playfield – to the beat of the soundtrack – erasing completed squares in its path, while also giving you the brief opportunity to quickly drop more squares, add multiplier combos and score even more points. To view this content, you'll need to update your privacy settings. Please click here and view the "Content and social-media partners" setting to do so. Lumines Arise adds a new mechanic to the addictive yet simple puzzle. 'Burst' is a refillable bar that you can trigger with L2/R2, which locks a square on the playing field, allowing you to pile on subsequent blocks. You can initiate Burst once the counter has rolled above 50, although it maxes out at 100. As you might expect for a synesthesia-tickling game like Arise , Burst mode has its own low-key musical accompaniment. Lumines has never looked better. But that's not just due to 2025 hardware power, but also design choices for Lumines' skins – the unhinged wallpaper design and block themes that bubble up as you advance through puzzle stages. They're delightfully mad and, at times, distracting. (As you play, the view of your Lumines blocks will occasionally 'zoom' closer – this is intentional. Game Director Takashi Ishihara said this was to both add some dynamism to what are typically static blocks, but also to pull the players' attention back to the game at hand. Lumines Arise wants you to focus on the now, not the score, your Burst meter, or your customizable avatar.) My favorite part of the demo was the final stage, which featured two chameleons simply raving along to the dance music. The soundtrack is, naturally, a banger, too. Lumines Arise features new music from Hydelic, also responsible for the award-winning soundtrack of Tetris Effect: Connected . (The band has already launched one track, "Only Human," on Bandcamp – it's coming to other streaming services, too.) On another stage, two skeletal hands, seemingly strung up like puppets, twitch and wriggle as you shift and rotate your blocks. If anything, I think Enhance missed a trick not mapping the finger movements to a DualSense controller. I said that in front of Ishihara because I have zero sense of decorum — apparently, he'd had the same idea. I now consider myself a game designer. I got to briefly see Lumines Arise running on a Steam Deck, too. The time of the handheld console and PC is now, so it's nice to see a typically made-for-consoles game ready for this new gaming PC form factor. Ishihara teased that there's more to reveal ahead of Arise 's launch. The game will launch on both PS5 and Steam, and it will also feature VR compatibility on both platforms. While Enhance wasn't yet willing to reveal the details, there will also be some form of multiplayer, but it seems like it'll be in a different form compared to the more adversarial nature of Tetris Effect's multiplayer modes. Additionally, Ishihara wanted to highlight that the avatars, which dance and emote in sync with your in-game actions, now feature legs. That is important, apparently. Enhance is promising more answers in due time. Lumines Arise is set to launch in fall 2025.

More price hikes could be coming as another retailer increases prices
HONOLULU (KHON2) — Budget retailer Daiso is the latest to announce a bump in their prices across the board. There is another change coming that could push prices everywhere even higher. Spike in steel tariffs could imperil Trump promise of lower grocery prices Bargain shoppers like to show off their haul after a stop at Daiso. 'Let's see, the stool was $8, but still cheaper than buying from Chinatown,' said Lynn Ishihara, Daiso shopper. 'I got house stuff, so like scrubber, stuff to hang your keys up, unnecessary stuff that I didn't need,' said Teysha Foster, Daiso shopper. That stuff costs a little more now. Daiso Hawaiʻi recently announced they are raising its base price from $1.75 to $2.25 effective today. 'Whenever I need something I check with them first, cause they have a reasonable price,' said Ishihara. Daiso Hawaiʻi did not give a reason for the increase, but consumers have been noticing a bump in everything because of tariffs.'I feel like it's happening, you know, and unfortunately it's stuff we have to deal with but I still need stuff,' said Foster. 'I have to keep buying stuff I mean, at this point what can I do.' Experts predict another potential bump in prices next year. The minimum wage in Hawaii goes up from $14 dollars/hour to $16 dollars/hour on Jan. 1, 2026. 'If shipping costs goes up, labor costs goes up, that's all factored into it and there's only so much that the businesses can absorb before they have to pass it on to the customers, unfortunately,' said Tina Yamaki, Retail Merchants of Hawaiʻi. Experts say it's a good idea to shop around to get the best bang for your buck. But they say price won't be the only factor in determining where a person spends their money. They say they'll also look at other things like convenience and customer service. 'If you're comfortable shopping there, if you feel, you know, like you're part of the ohana, people go back,' said Yamaki. 'They're also looking at who has the better prices, too. So it's kind of a combination of both.' Download the free KHON2 app for iOS or Android to stay informed on the latest news All that still adds up to a win for Daiso's shoppers. 'Are you still gonna come shopping here? Yeah I am,' said Foster. 'Even little bit higher, it's still a reasonable price,' said Ishihara. 'And then lot of stuff you cannot find at another store.' Japanese designer wins Chelsea Flower Show garden of the year
KYODO NEWS - Jun 1, 2025 - 11:29 | Arts, All Japanese landscape designer Kazuyuki Ishihara won the garden of the year award for the first time at the Chelsea Flower Show, a globally famous landscaping competition in London, in May with a Japanese tea garden. A veteran participant at the show, Ishihara also won the gold medal in the show garden category for the first time among other awards at the annual event held by the Royal Horticultural Society, Britain's leading garden charity, according to his office. It was the 13th gold medal overall for the 67-year-old, who has been competing in the show since 2004. Describing the show garden gold as the most difficult to obtain, he said he was "proud" to have won it with his "Japanese Tea Garden." He also won the People's Choice award, voted on by the public. The garden, themed on communication and harmony and called "Cha No Niwa" in Japanese, uses plants and trees commonly seen in the Japanese countryside such as Japanese maples and irises around its tea house. "I wanted to convey the beauty of the spirit of Japan that enables heart-to-heart communications through tea and beautiful scenery in a world of chaos," said Ishihara. Japanese designer Masataka Taniguchi, 42, won the gold medal in the category of container gardens featuring small-scale landscapes with his work "Komorebi Garden." Komorebi is a Japanese word for sunlight piercing through a tree canopy.
