Yankees-Pirates Trade Idea Brings Beloved Infielder Back to New York

Yankees-Pirates Trade Idea Brings Beloved Infielder Back to New York originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Yankees ended an embarrassing six-game losing streak with a 7-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday, with home runs from Trent Grisham and Paul Goldschmidt being the recipe for a cathartic win. Advertisement Friday's seven-run outburst equaled the Yankees' total over their previous seven games; the last Yankee team to post 6+ losses with that poor of an offensive run was the 1908 squad. Fortunately, enough offensive trade targets exist that the Yankees can supplement their areas of need with a few savvy moves over the coming weeks. One of those can be found in an old friend in Pittsburgh. Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY SportsCharles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who played for the Yankees from 2022 to 2023, has hit to a strong .288 batting average for the Pirates this year, and trade rumors have been swirling due to his impending free agency. Jon Heyman of the New York Post predicted the Yankees could swing a cheap trade for their beloved former infielder. Advertisement IKF's .692 OPS leaves a lot to be desired, but his .333 on base percentage would bode well for the Yankees if they choose to pursue him as a trade deadline option. IKF has made 203 appearances at third base, including 37 at the hot corner during his time with the Yankees. A trade for IKF has a number of benefits: for one, he already has experience playing in the Bronx, which is polarizing for several reasons. Mostly, though, IKF slotting at third base would give Jazz Chisholm Jr daily reps at second base, and alleviate the need for DJ LeMahieu or Oswald Peraza to occupy the four slot. A trade for IKF would hardly be expensive, and it would promise the Yankees another on-base hitter, potentially at the back of the lineup ahead of Paul Goldschmidt, Cody Bellinger and Aaron Judge. Pirates edge Brewers on Nick Gonzales' 5-hit night

June 24 - Isiah Kiner-Falefa tripled in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and Nick Gonzales had five hits as the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates held on for a 5-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday in the opener of a three-game series. Gonzales had two doubles and three singles, driving in two runs, and Tommy Pham homered for the Pirates, who won back-to-back games for the first time since a four-game streak June 6-9. The Brewers had their four-game winning streak snapped. Chase Shugart (4-3) got the win in relief. David Bednar finished with a scoreless ninth for his 11th save in 11 opportunities. The Brewers threatened in the ninth when Caleb Durbin singled to open the inning, but he was caught stealing when he slid past second for the first out of the inning. Pittsburgh went in front 5-4 with a run in the sixth off reliever Nick Mears (1-1) when Pham singled with one out and Kiner-Falefa tripled to right. Christian Yelich brought the Brewers even at 4-all in the fifth with his 15th homer, a two-run shot down the right field line off Shugart. Pham staked the Pirates to a 3-0 lead with a two-run homer in the fourth. Ke'Bryan Hayes walked with one out and Pham followed with his first homer, sending the first pitch 416 feet to center. The Brewers got two back in the bottom half against Hunter Stratton, who relieved Braxton Ashcraft to open the inning. Yelich walked and William Contreras and Brice Turang singled to make it 3-1. Isaac Collins blooped a single into shallow right to load the bases and Durbin followed with a sacrifice fly. Pittsburgh made it 4-2 in fifth when Bryan Reynolds doubled to open and scored on a single by Gonzales. The Pirates took a 1-0 lead after two outs in the first when Reynolds singled and Gonzales followed with an RBI double to left-center. Pirates rookie right-hander Ashcraft, making his first major league start after seven relief appearances, allowed one hit over three scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Brewers rookie starter Chad Patrick gave up four runs on nine hits in five innings, with a career-high nine strikeouts. --Field Level Media

Pirates win 5-4 to cool off the Brewers

Nick Gonzales went 5 for 5 with two RBIs, Isiah Kiner-Falefa tripled home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat Milwaukee 5-4 on Monday night to snap the Brewers' four-game winning streak. Tommy Pham hit a one-out single off Nick Mears (1-1) and scored when Kiner-Falefa sent a line drive into the right-field corner. Pham also hit his first homer of the season, a two-run shot off Chad Patrick in the fourth. Kiner-Falefa's big hit came after Milwaukee slugger Christian Yelich tied the game in the fifth by connecting on a 3-0 pitch from Chase Shugart (4-3) for a two-run homer that stayed just inside the right-field foul pole. Yelich has batted .402 (41 for 102) with eight homers and 30 RBIs over his last 26 games. He is 16 for 30 with 14 RBIs in his past seven games. David Bednar worked around a hit and a walk in the ninth to earn his 11th save in as many opportunities. Bednar hasn't allowed an earned run in his last 13 appearances. Pittsburgh's Braxton Ashcraft made his first career start and allowed one hit and no walks over three innings, lowering his ERA to 1.23. Ashcraft primarily has been a starter in the minors, but all seven of his previous major league appearances came in relief. Milwaukee had a runner at first with nobody out in the ninth when Jake Bauers hit a long drive to right that looked like a potential walk-off homer before it went just foul. Two pitches later, Caleb Durbin attempted to steal second but overslid the bag and was tagged out. Bauers eventually walked, but Bednar struck out Joey Ortiz and retired Sal Frelick on a shallow fly to right. Gonzales is 12 for 22 over his last five games, raising his batting average from .226 to .320. Left-hander Andrew Heaney (3-6, 3.94 ERA) starts for Pittsburgh and right-hander Freddy Peralta (7-4, 2.76) pitches for Milwaukee on Tuesday night.
