Muharram processions: Strict security arrangements enforced in ICT
ISLAMABAD: Strict security arrangements have been enforced in Islamabad for the 9th Muharram processions, with Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Chairman CDA, and DG Civil Defence Muhammad Ali Randhawa personally overseeing the preparations. During a surprise visit to the Central Imambargah Asna Ashri in G-6, the officials reviewed the arrangements and assessed the on-ground situation. A foolproof security plan—devised on the directives of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi—is being implemented in coordination with CDA, Islamabad Police, and the district administration. The procession route has been fully cleared, and a large contingent of police personnel is deployed for security, the Chief Commissioner said. According to Randhawa, Safe City cameras are providing uninterrupted surveillance of the procession. Ahsan visits under-construction National Police Hospital, Islamabad
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal paid a visit to the under-construction National Police Hospital located in Sector H-11, Islamabad and directed the concerned authorities to ensure the timely completion of the project by June 2026. He was accompanied by Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, Inspector General of Islamabad Police, and Deputy Commissioner Islamabad. During the visit, the federal minister reviewed the construction progress and expressed satisfaction over the pace of work. He directed the concerned authorities to ensure the timely completion of the project by June 2026, emphasising that the hospital is a significant step towards the welfare and healthcare of police personnel. 'This project reflects the state's firm commitment to supporting law enforcement agencies. Our police force forms the frontline of internal security, and it is the state's responsibility to ensure their health and wellbeing,' he said. Sharing details of the project, the minister said the National Police Hospital will be a state-of-the-art facility with a capacity of 250 beds. It will provide services in general medicine, surgery, emergency care, and other specialized areas. Upon completion, it will directly benefit nearly 12,000 police personnel by offering them access to modern medical facilities. He noted that the project was approved in May 2023 and underscored the importance of its timely completion. 'These projects are funded by taxpayers' money and must be treated as a national trust. Any negligence in their delivery is unacceptable,' he said. Officials from the relevant ministries, engineers, and project stakeholders briefed the minister on the current status and progress of construction. Iqbal instructed all involved to maintain transparency, quality, and speed in implementation, adding that sustainable and timely completion of development projects is vital for the uplift of vulnerable segments of society and the strengthening of state institutions. Islamabad police make history with appointment of first woman SHO at men's station
ISLAMABAD: Sub-Inspector Misbah Shehbaz has been appointed the Station House Officer (SHO) at Phulgran Police Station, becoming the first woman to head a general (men's) police station in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad. The appointment was announced in an official press statement issued by the Foreign Media Cell of Islamabad Police on Thursday. According to the statement, the appointment was made through formal orders issued by Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Muhammad Jawad Tariq, who said the move was intended to 'end gender discrimination within the Islamabad Police.' 'This initiative will continue and more female officers will be given the opportunity to lead police stations,' Tariq was quoted as saying in the press release. The post of SHO is one of the most visible and operationally significant leadership roles in Pakistan's police hierarchy, responsible for crime investigation, public safety, and station-level administration. Until now, female SHOs in Islamabad had only led women police stations. By assigning a female officer to a mixed or general police station, Islamabad Police is signalling its intent to challenge long-standing norms. Observers say the move also aligns with broader reforms encouraged by both domestic policymakers and international partners such as the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), which have pushed for gender-sensitive policing frameworks in Pakistan. While Shehbaz's appointment is a welcome development, it also highlights the structural barriers that female officers continue to face in entering Pakistan's law enforcement sector. According to the National Police Bureau (NPB) and UN Women Pakistan, as of 2023, women made up only 3.2% of Pakistan's total police force — that is 15,509 female officers out of 489,645 nationwide. In Islamabad, female representation was slightly higher at 5.04%, based on official NPB data published in 2023. Between 2019 and 2023, 11,398 women joined various police organizations in Pakistan, but the vast majority were not placed in command or operational leadership roles, as per a UN Women & NPB joint assessment report from 2023. Experts say the absence of women in decision-making and field leadership reduces institutional responsiveness to gender-based violence and community trust in law enforcement.

Who killed Pakistani TikTok star Sana Yousuf? Teen shot dead for rejecting suspect's 'offers of friendship'
After 17-year-old Pakistani TikTok star Sana Yousuf was shot dead at her Islamabad residence on Monday, a man was arrested in Faisalabad in eastern Punjab province for allegedly killing her. The accused, identified as 22-year-old Umar Hayat, also a social media content creator, was arrested on Tuesday by the Islamabad Police and was produced in court on Wednesday. Umar is accused of shooting Sana Yousuf, who had more than one million followers on social media, after she rejected his offer of friendship. The murder in Pakistan's capital city has sparked widespread outrage across the globe. According to TV footage, Umar, with his face covered, was brought to court, where police requested additional time to complete their investigation and file formal murder charges. The judge ordered that Umar be presented again on June 18 for pretrial proceedings. Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, Islamabad's Inspector General of Police (IGP), told a media briefing on Tuesday: 'The accused is a 22-year-old unemployed man who repeatedly attempted to contact the victim. Upon her refusal to respond, he committed the murder.' The suspect took Yousuf's phone with him to 'destroy evidence'. But police had seized her phone as well as the murder weapon from the suspect, Rizvi added. The suspect and Yousuf had known each other for one year. He had travelled to Islamabad between May 28 and 29 to wish Yousuf well on her birthday, but the two could not meet, for unspecified reasons, Dawn reported, citing sources. Authorities told BBC that they believe Umar Hayat murdered Yousaf at her home in Islamabad on Monday after she rejected what they called his "offers of friendship". He allegedly also repeatedly tried, and failed, to meet her. Sana originally hailed from the northern region of Chitral in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Through her videos, she promoted traditional Chitrali music and dress and advocated for girls' education. Hours before Sana Yousuf was killed, she had posted a photo celebrating her birthday with friends. According to The Express Tribune, Sana was shot at close range by an unidentified assailant who reportedly entered her home and opened fire before fleeing the scene. The report, citing police sources, stated: "The killer reportedly entered the house and opened fire before fleeing the scene."
