Iran holds funeral for military commanders, scientists killed in Israeli strikes

Tehran: Iran on Saturday held a state funeral for the military commanders and nuclear scientists killed during a 12-day conflict with Israel. The ceremony was attended by the families of those killed in the attacks as well as high-ranking Iranian officials and military commanders, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and senior advisor to Iran's supreme leader, Ali Shamkhani, who was severely injured in the Israeli airstrikes on Tehran. On June 13, Israel launched major airstrikes on different areas in Iran, including nuclear and military sites, killing several senior commanders, nuclear scientists and civilians. Iran responded by launching several waves of missile and drone attacks on Israel. Following the 12-day war, a ceasefire between Iran and Israel was achieved on Tuesday. The mourners waved Iran's flags while chanting slogans against Israel and the United States, Xinhua news agency reported. They carried pictures of the "martyred" commanders and nuclear scientists, including Chief Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Hossein Salami, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Mohammad Bagheri, Chief Commander of the IRGC's Aerospace Division Amir Ali Hajizadeh and Chief Commander of the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters and his successor, Gholam Ali Rashid and Ali Shadmani, respectively. Iran's Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni said at the ceremony that the United States and Israel proved that they failed to honour any of their commitments. He emphasised that the Iranian armed forces were highly vigilant to give a decisive response to any "malicious action" or breach of promises by the "enemy". The burial ceremonies are scheduled to be held on Sunday. Bagheri will be buried alongside his wife and daughter, local media reported. The "historic" funeral ceremony in Tehran to honour 60 individuals, including senior military commanders and prominent Nuclear scientists, began at 8 A.M. local time at Enghelab (Revolution) Square in central Tehran. Following the official tributes, a large-scale funeral procession proceeded to Azadi Square, approximately 11 kilometres away, where further rites took place. The Iranian state media described the occasion as one of the most consequential public funerals in recent memory.

Iran Delivers Strong Warning After Ceasefire

Iran's Supreme National Security Council has said its army does not trust Israel and is ready to swiftly respond to any attack, according to Iranian state media, amid concerns that the U.S.-brokered ceasefire may not hold. Separately, major General Mohammad Pakpour, the new commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), warned the United States that any additional airstrikes would provoke a retaliation harsher than Iran's missile attack on Al-Udeid base in Qatar the day before. Newsweek has reached out to the Israeli Prime Minister's office, the U.S. State Department and Iran's Foreign Ministry for comment. The fresh warnings out of Tehran came after U.S. President Donald Trump had announced a ceasefire over social media and urged both sides not to violate it. Iran has not publicly rejected the ceasefire but tensions with the U.S. and Israel remain high following a conflict that has stretched over 12 days. Both Iran and Israel have claimed "victory" in the war. Iran has suffered damages to key nuclear and military infrastructure while its missiles have hit deep into Israeli territory. The conflict reached a new peak when the U.S. bombed three nuclear facilities on Sunday, which promoted the Iranian missile attack on Al-Udeid, the largest American military base in the Middle East. The Supreme National Security Council, Iran's top security body, said the Iranian armed forces, "trusting no words from the enemy and with fingers on the trigger, stand ready to deliver a decisive and punitive response to any hostile action," according to a statement in Persian published by the semi-official Tasnim News Agency. The council claimed its attacks on the American base, and near-daily targeting of Israel, had forced the ceasefire. The U.S. and Qatar reported no damage or casualties from Iranian ballistic missiles, with military assets evacuated from the base days ahead. "I want to thank Iran for giving us early notice, which made it possible for no lives to be lost, and nobody to be injured," Trump wrote following Iran's attack. Tehran's latest statement is thought to be a response to Trump's ceasefire. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the announcement but warned his country would "respond forcefully to any violation." Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baqaei on X: "Iran's military strikes on American military base 'Al-Udeid' was in exercise of our self-defense under Article 51 of the U.N. Charter in response to the United States' unprovoked aggression against Iran's territorial integrity and national sovereignty that took place on 22 June, resolve not to let U.S./Israeli criminal aggressions and malign policies against Iran create division between us and the brotherly countries of the region." Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a public statement: "Israel has removed from itself an immediate existential double threat—both in the nuclear domain and in the field of ballistic missiles. Additionally, the [Israel Defense Forces] achieved full air superiority over Tehran's skies, struck a heavy blow to the military leadership, and destroyed dozens of central government targets in Iran." U.S. President Donald Trump on Truth Social: "We couldn't have made today's 'deal' without the talent and courage of our great B-2 pilots, and all of those associated with that operation. In a certain and very ironic way, that perfect 'hit,' late in the evening, brought everyone together and the deal was made!!!" It remains to be seen whether both sides will stick to the ceasefire as urged by Trump, paving the way for possible negotiations. Qatar is also discussing how to respond to what it described as a breach of its sovereignty by Iran. Israel assassinates IRGC members in Iran as missile strikes hit nuclear sites

IRGC/WANA (West Asia News Agency)/Handout via REUTERS/File Photo Listen to article At least 10 members of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were assassinated in Israeli air strikes on the central province of Yazd on Sunday, Iranian media stated. Iran has not yet responded publicly to the reported deaths in Yazd. The IRGC, a powerful branch of Iran's military reporting directly to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, plays a central role in the country's foreign operations and oversees its ballistic missile and nuclear programmes. It comprises around 190,000 active personnel and was designated a terrorist organisation by the United States in 2019. An unspecified number of other IRGC personnel were also wounded in the strikes, which mark one of the deadliest Israeli attacks on Iranian territory since tensions escalated earlier this month, reported semi-official Tasnim News Agency. Israel has not officially confirmed the strike in Yazd but claims it has assassinated around two dozen Iranian military commanders and nuclear scientists since June 13. Israeli air strikes have killed several top Iranian military officials and nuclear scientists, including the commander of the IRGC Hossein Salami, in one of the most direct and deadly escalations between the two countries to date. IRGC has begun using the Kheibar Shekan missile—also known as the Khorramshahr-4—which was unveiled in 2022 and is believed to carry the heaviest payload among Iran's ballistic missiles. IRGC said its latest missile strikes targeted Ben Gurion International Airport and several research sites in Israel. The attacks also killed six prominent nuclear scientists and wounded hundreds, as Israel targeted key infrastructure sites across Iran, including the uranium enrichment facility in Natanz. After the assasinations, Khamenei appointed Ahmad Vahidi as the new IRGC chief and Majid Mousavi as head of its aerospace division. The initial wave of Israeli strikes, involving approximately 200 fighter jets, hit multiple Iranian cities, including Tehran, Isfahan, Arak, Tabriz, and Kermanshah. In Kermanshah, near the Iraqi border, an underground ballistic missile storage facility was reportedly destroyed. Iranian authorities initially reported at least 80 people killed and over 320 wounded in the first round of attacks. However, updated figures from Human Rights Activists (HRA), a Washington-based monitoring group, indicate that Israeli strikes have killed at least 950 people and injured more than 3,450 across Iran to date. The group, known for documenting the 2022 Mahsa Amini protests, cross-checks local reports with an independent network inside the country. Iran's government has not issued consistent nationwide casualty updates during the conflict. Its most recent count, released by the Health Ministry, reported 400 deaths and over 3,000 injuries—figures significantly lower than HRA's estimates. Among the injured is senior Iranian diplomat Ali Shamkhani, who has been leading negotiations with the United States. He is reported to be in critical condition following the strikes.

In a forceful statement, the IRGC warned of devastating retaliation beyond the imagination of its enemies. Iran claims US bases are now vulnerable targets and confirmed it has identified the launch points of the attacks. The IRGC also vowed to continue Operation True Promise III, targeting key Israeli infrastructure. Iran's Atomic Energy Organization said the bombed sites were peaceful and under IAEA supervision.
