(Dave Mitchell/CTV News Edmonton) Namaruish said he has been waiting for this moment for five years and that the school will be the biggest of its kind in the city's south side, with a mosque built on site. 'It feels (good) to have a place where interfaith can happen, where they can communicate to neighbours around them and they can show the real picture of Islam and Muslims to the rest of the community of Edmonton,' he said, adding they are expecting to start with 300 students in the first phase of opening and they hope to grow that number to more than a thousand. New Islamic school in south Edmonton Construction will begin for a new Islamic school in south Edmonton. A ground-breaking ceremony took place on July 23, 2025. (Dave Mitchell/CTV News Edmonton) Ward Karhiio councillor Keren Tang spoke during the ceremony citing a shortage of K-9 and high schools in the area. 'When I look around, yes, there is still quite a bit of farmland, but there's much potential for growth, for development in this part of the city,' Tang said. 'And I appreciate your vision that you want to build a school and a community close to where people live.' Namaruish said the school will welcome everyone to join the centre and learn more about Islam and to start that dialog of understanding. 'We need to be stronger through our diversity, to build the community here, to make Canada a stronger country together, (and) we can do that.' OIAA said they hope to have construction complete by the end of next summer and be open for the 2026 school year in September. The first phase of the school will be K-9. Israeli Occupation Forces Raid Several Towns and Cities in West Bank
Occupied Quds – Saba: Israeli occupation forces raided several areas in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday evening, including the town of Al-Jeeb northwest of Quds, Nablus, Dhanaba suburb east of Tulkarm, and Silat al-Harithiya west of Jenin. According to the Palestinian News Agency Wafa, the Jerusalem Governorate reported that Israeli forces stormed Al-Jeeb and fired toxic tear gas canisters toward Palestinian homes. No injuries were reported. In Nablus, security sources stated that Israeli forces entered the city with several military vehicles from the Beit Furik checkpoint in the east, patrolled multiple neighborhoods and streets, stationed near the 'Dahlet al-Mawtarat' area in the eastern part of the city, and raided a residential building. Later in the evening, similar forces stormed the Dhanaba suburb, east of Tulkarm. Local sources reported that an infantry unit, accompanied by a military vehicle and a fuel tanker, raided the area, stationed at several intersections—particularly near the Islamic School and Dhanaba Hall—and disrupted the movement of civilians and vehicles. The sources added that Israeli soldiers raided several commercial shops and forced owners to close them under threat. In Silat al-Harithiya, west of Jenin, occupation forces launched another raid using a large number of military vehicles and infantry units. They deployed in the Ziyoud neighborhood, stormed the home of martyr Raafat Dawasah and his relatives' homes, positioned snipers on rooftops, and forced nearby residents to evacuate their homes. Additionally, Israeli forces raided the Kharouba neighborhood in Jenin, stormed several homes, and deployed infantry units near Batikhah Roundabout, with a military vehicle stationed in front of Jenin Governmental Hospital. The Israeli occupation continues its aggression against Jenin city and its refugee camp for the 162nd consecutive day, during which bulldozers have demolished homes in and around the camp. Over the same period, the ongoing assault has resulted in 40 martyrs, more than 200 wounded, the displacement of 22,000 residents, and dozens of arrests. Whatsapp Telegram Email Print

George Town's ‘mini Mecca': Acheen Street Mosque opens its doors for cultural harmony and heritage
GEORGE TOWN, June 30 — Over the past several years, the Acheen Street Mosque here has opened its doors to the general public during Ramadan to host buka puasa with non-Muslims. The historical mosque, located along Acheh Street, also has a sign on its gate welcoming non-Muslims to visit it. According to mosque committee member Mohd Norhisham Mohd Abdul Kadir, this is a way for them to spread the peaceful teachings of Islam so that non-Muslims can understand the religion better. 'We don't want people to misunderstand us so our doors are always open to everyone, for them to better understand Islam and the beauty of our religion,' he said. He said during Ramadan, they will have a harmony iftar by inviting leaders from other communities including priests from the churches in George Town and members from the Chinese kongsi and temples. He said it is a way to promote harmony among the communities in the heritage city while also encouraging better understanding among different religious groups and cultures. 'It is why we have a signboard that welcomes non-Muslims to visit our mosque,' he said. He said the mosque is open to visitors as long as it is not during prayer times and visitors are only required to dress appropriately if they want to enter. Traditional 'kampung' houses within the mosque compound remain today and the mosque committee is planning to restore the one vacant house and turn it into an Islamic religious school. — Picture by Opalyn Mok There are still five kampung houses within the compound of Acheen Street Mosque, also known as Masjid Lebuh Acheh, that are still occupied by tenants who have been living there for decades. These are half-mansonry and half-timber bungalows that were built in the 19th century. 'Only one of these houses is vacant as we are planning to restore it and turn it into a religious school,' Mohd Norhisham said. The Acheen Street Mosque was built in 1808 by a Muslim leader and trader from Acheh, Indonesia, Tunku Syed Hussain Al-Aidid. It is one of the earliest mosques in Penang and formed an important part of the island's Islamic history. It was a hub for Muslims to gather and it was also a centre of Islamic education that attracted students and religious teachers from across the region. The mosque also played an important role in spreading Islamic teachings and culture even as Penang grew into a major trading port. The mosque features unique architectural styles such as a weather vane on top of its minaret to show the direction of the wind. At that time, the minaret of the mosque stood tall above the houses and served as a beacon for ships. The minaret itself showcases influences of Yemenis or Egyptians, Chinese pagoda and Mughal buildings while the tiered roof featured Hokkien-style swallowtail ridges that were common in 18th to 19th century mosques throughout the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Java. The Acheen Street Mosque will be one of the eight buildings to conduct open house tours as part of the Historic Building Open House programme during heritage celebrations on July 7.
