Jeremy Corbyn launches new UK political party
Former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn has announced the launch of a new political party in the UK, vowing to challenge what he described as a 'rigged system.' Corbyn led Labour from 2015 to 2020, but was expelled from the party in 2024 after running as an independent in his Islington North constituency. He had already been suspended over his response to allegations of anti-Semitism within Labour, which he denied, calling the claims politically motivated. His supporters saw it as a smear campaign tied to his anti-austerity and anti-war views. In a statement on X on Thursday, he declared it was 'time to build new kind of political party – one that belongs to you,' emphasizing the party's commitment to tackling inequality. The party is expected to include other left-wing figures suspended or expelled by Labour, particularly Zarah Sultana, the MP for Coventry South, who was reprimanded in 2024 after voting to lift the cap on child benefits – a policy widely criticized by anti-poverty campaigners. A website, ' has been launched, though Sultana clarified that the party is 'not called Your Party.' It's time for a new kind of political party - one that belongs to you. Sign up at Corbyn and Sultana said 4.5 million children are living in poverty in the UK and criticized a 'rigged system' where corporations profit from rising bills while 'billions' are set aside for war.'We cannot accept these injustices – and neither should you,' the statement reads, going on to advocate 'mass redistribution of wealth and power' by taxing the wealthiest. Corbyn has clashed frequently with Labour's current leadership over military support for Israel and Ukraine. The UK has been one of the most vocal supporters of Kiev's war effort. Corbyn has repeatedly called for a diplomatic solution and questioned whether the UK is 'at war' with Russia. Moscow perceives the Ukraine conflict as a Western proxy war against Russia. The Kremlin has consistently denounced Western arms deliveries to Kiev, saying that they only prolong the conflict without changing its outcome. It has also accused the EU and UK of impeding ongoing peace efforts and criticized their expanded defense budgets, warning it could precipitate a broader conflict in Europe.

Corbyn calls for ‘redistribution of wealth and power' as he launches new party
Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has launched a new political party. The Independent MP for Islington North said in a statement that the 'system is rigged' as he called for 'mass redistribution of wealth and power'. The new party is a joint venture with Coventry MP Zarah Sultana, but it has had a difficult launch process. Ms Sultana said she was launching the party with Mr Corbyn earlier this month, but the former Labour leader appeared unready to announce the move. And now there appears to be no agreement on the party's name. The movement has the website with a welcome message saying 'this is your party' – but Ms Sultana said: 'It's not called Your Party.' In a joint message announcing the new party, Mr Corbyn and Ms Sultana said: 'It's time for a new kind of political party. One that belongs to you.' An inaugural conference will take place for members to 'decide the party's direction, the model of leadership and the policies that are needed to transform society'. Mr Corbyn led the Labour Party from 2015 to 2020 before being suspended following a row over a report into antisemitism in the party. He was expelled in 2024 and successfully contested the summer election as an Independent candidate. Ms Sultana had the Labour whip withdrawn after rebelling against the Government to vote to scrap the two-child benefit cap shortly after the general election. She resigned her Labour membership in 2025.

Third of Labour voters could vote for Corbyn party
Almost one in three Labour supporters would consider voting for a new Left-wing party led by Jeremy Corbyn, a new poll shows. Thirty-one per cent of people who backed Sir Keir Starmer's party at the general election last year said they are open to switching their support to a new group led by the former Labour party leader. Last week Mr Corbyn and Zarah Sultana confirmed their involvement in a new hard-Left party that plans to fight Labour. YouGov asked 2,000 British adults how likely they were on a scale of one to 10 to vote for a new party led by Mr Corbyn. Out of the Labour voters surveyed, 31 per cent gave a response of at least six out of 10, while 40 per cent indicated they were willing to consider voting for the Green Party. A further 12 per cent said they would consider voting for Nigel Farage's Reform UK, a sign that Sir Keir is losing votes on both the Left and Right. Among voters for all parties, 18 per cent said they would consider voting for a new party led by Mr Corbyn. The findings are a further blow for Sir Keir, who has seen Labour's poll lead evaporate since the general election and the popularity of his Government sink to historic lows one year after taking office. Reform is currently leading in the polls, and the YouGov survey will add to fears in Labour circles that division among voters on the Left would help Mr Farage secure victory at the next general election. Mr Corbyn, the MP of Islington North, led Labour between 2015 and 2020 and was in charge of the party during the 2017 and 2019 general elections. Labour won 40 per cent of the popular vote in 2017 and forced a hung Parliament after the dramatic collapse of the Conservative campaign under Baroness May. Two years later, however, Labour slumped to its worst electoral defeat since 1935 as it was reduced to just over 200 seats and Boris Johnson secured a landslide Tory majority. Corbyn targets Streeting's constituency Mr Corbyn sits as an independent MP after being exiled from Labour in 2020. Ms Sultana lost the Labour whip last year after rebelling against Sir Keir's decision to keep the two-child benefit cap. The two MPs are significantly to the Left of their former party on issues including welfare cuts, tax rises and the conflict in the Middle East. Their new party plans to target Labour big beasts, and Mr Corbyn held an event in Ilford North – the constituency narrowly held by Wes Streeting, the Health Secretary – hours after the new party was announced.

Almost a fifth of Britons say they could back a new Jeremy Corbyn-led hard Left party - including almost a third of Labour supporters
Almost a fifth of voters would consider voting for a new hard Left party led by Jeremy Corbyn at the next election, a shock new poll suggests today. As the former Labour leader gears up to form and potentially head a new socialist body some 18 per cent of Britons say they could back it. Mr Corbyn, 76, last week said there was a 'thirst' among voters 'for an alternative view to be put' forward. And one of his allies, Zarah Sultana, quit Labour saying she would co-leader a new party with him. A poll by YouGov today shows that more than half of people who voted Green in the general election last year would consider backing a new Corbyn party. But in a sign of discontent with Labour under Sir Keir Starmer, almost a third (30 per cent) of those who backed him last year would now think about backing his predecessor. The figures show that the introduction of a new party could create a six-way split in UK politics, with all the parties having a vote share between 30 and 18 per cent. Mr Corbyn has sat as the independent MP for Islington North since being suspended by Labour in 2020 for downplaying the extent of anti-Semitism in the party under his leadership. He was expelled last year but retained his seat in the general election, since when he has been part of the Independent Alliance, a loose grouping of independent MPs with left wing political views. Appearing on ITV 's Peston last week - after opposing plans to proscribe Palestine Action as a terrorist group - he said he was working with groups 'all around the country' 'That grouping will come together. There will be an alternative view and there will be an alternative put there which is about a society that deals with poverty, inequality and a foreign policy that's based on peace rather than war,' he said. Asked if he would like to lead the party he said: 'I'm here to work, I'm here to serve the people in the way I've always tried to do.' The next day Ms Sultana, the Coventry South MP, 31, quit Labour saying she would co-lead a new outfit with the former party leader, who will be almost 80 by the time of the next election. But Mr Corbyn has been much cooler about his role after apparently being caught off-guard with her announcement late on Thursday night. The next day he said 'discussions are ongoing' - saying Ms Sultana would 'help us build a new alternative' but stopping short of endorsing her as a 'co-leader'. YouGov asked more than 2,500 adults to say on a scale of 1-10 how likely they were to consider voting for different parties, using scores of 6-10 to five a percentage score. Support was highest among those aged 18 to 24, where more than a third (36 per cent) would consider backing a Corbyn party. Support was also higher in London (29 per cent) than anywhere else. However, it found that 91 per cent of those considering backing a Corbyn party were also open to voting for other parties as well, showing again how fragmented UK politics currently is. 'A key problem for the new party is that considering voting for a party is not necessarily the same as voting for it, especially when your supporters are open to voting for other, more established parties as well,' a spokesman said. 'Indeed, just 9 per cent of those who are open to considering voting for Corbyn's new party (amounting to 2 per cent of all Britons) are not willing to consider voting for any of the five existing significant national parties.'

Corbyn says ‘discussions ongoing' as Sultana quits Labour to ‘co-lead new party'
Jeremy Corbyn has said 'discussions are ongoing' after Zarah Sultana announced she was quitting Labour to co-lead the founding of a new party with him. The former Labour Party leader congratulated Coventry South MP Ms Sultana on her 'principled decision' to leave Sir Keir Starmer's party. In a statement on X, independent Islington North MP Mr Corbyn said: 'Real change is coming. Real change is coming. — Jeremy Corbyn (@jeremycorbyn) July 4, 2025 'One year on from the election, this Labour Government has refused to deliver the change people expected and deserved. Poverty, inequality and war are not inevitable. Our country needs to change direction, now. 'Congratulations to Zarah Sultana on her principled decision to leave the Labour Party. I am delighted that she will help us build a real alternative. 'The democratic foundations of a new kind of political party will soon take shape. Discussions are ongoing – and I am excited to work alongside all communities to fight for the future people deserve. 'Together, we can create something that is desperately missing from our broken political system: hope.' Ms Sultana, who had the Labour whip suspended last year, said on Thursday night she was quitting Sir Keir's party and would 'co-lead the founding of a new party' with the ex-Labour leader.
