Israel's latest Gaza assault forces mass evacuations in Gaza
Israel has launched a ground and air assault on the central Gazan city of Deir al-Balah, marking a significant escalation in the conflict. The fresh evacuation order in the densely populated area could displace up to 80,000, while around 30,000 are already displaced and living in dozens of refugee camps there. The options of where to go are increasingly limited. The UN says almost 88% of Gaza is under evacuation orders or within Israeli-militarised zones – leaving more than two million people confined to just 12% of its land. Israeli forces dropped leaflets urging Deir al-Balah residents to move south to al-Mawasi in Khan Younis – already feeling the strain of mass displacement, and being attacked several times by the IDF. The UN and other agencies relocated key operations to Deir al-Balah from Rafah more than a year ago. Warning: this report contains distressing images

Israeli military launches first ground operation in Deir al-Balah
The Israeli military has launched a ground operation on Monday in the central Gaza city of Deir al-Balah, sending in tanks a day after dropping leaflets on neighbourhoods advising people to evacuate. The ground operation, the first to take place in the city since the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza erupted in 2023, is being accompanied by aerial strikes by Israel's air force. Eyewitnesses said massive air strikes took place on the city overnight into Monday, one of the last remaining areas of the Strip not to suffer significant damage from the war. The city is hosting thousands of Palestinians displaced from southern Gaza and is also the main hub for erratic aid deliveries due to its central location. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) cautioned against a military operation in Deir al-Balah after the IDF dropped evacuation orders on the city on Sunday. "OCHA warns that today's mass displacement order issued by the Israeli military has dealt yet another devastating blow to the already fragile lifelines keeping people alive across the Gaza Strip," the agency said in a statement. "With this latest order, the area of Gaza under displacement orders or within Israeli-militarised zones has risen to 87.8%, leaving 2.1 million civilians squeezed into a fragmented 12% of the Strip, where essential services have collapsed." The Israel Defence Forces haven't yet released a statement about the aims of the latest operation, but Israeli sources have said one of the reasons the IDF has so far stayed away from Deir al-Balah is that they suspect Hamas might be holding hostages there. The militant group is still holding 50 people captive in Gaza, at least 20 of whom are believed to still be alive. The new military operation comes after Gaza suffered its deadliest day for aid-seekers in more than 21 months of war on Sunday, with at least 85 Palestinians killed while trying to access food, according to local and UN officials. The highest death toll was reported in northern Gaza, where the situation is especially desperate, when at least 70 Palestinians were killed while trying to reach aid entering through the Zikim crossing with Israel, according to health officials. The UN World Food Programme said 25 trucks with aid had entered for "starving communities" when it encountered massive crowds. The Israeli military said soldiers fired warning shots at a gathering of thousands of Palestinians in northern Gaza who posed a threat, and it was aware of some casualties. It also rejected casualty reports as "exaggerated".

UN warns against Israeli evacuation orders in Deir al Balah
21 July 2025 10:03 NEW YORK (WAM) An Israeli military order for residents and displaced people in Gaza's Deir al Balah area to move south dealt 'another devastating blow' to humanitarian efforts in the war-ravaged territory, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on warned that Sunday's mass displacement order issued by the Israeli military has dealt yet another devastating blow to the already fragile lifelines keeping people alive across the Gaza Strip. The order covers about 5.6 square kilometres of Deir al Balah, spanning four estimates indicated that between 50,000 and 80,000 people were in the area at the time the order was issued, including some 30,000 people sheltering in 57 displacement least 1,000 families have fled the area in recent staff are remaining in Deir al Balah, spread across dozens of premises. Their coordinates have been shared with the relevant parties. These locations – as with all civilian sites – must be protected, regardless of displacement newly-designated area includes several humanitarian warehouses, four primary health clinics, four medical points, and critical water infrastructure: the Southern Gaza Desalination Plant, three water wells, one water reservoir, one solid waste dumping site and one wastewater pumping station. Any damage to this infrastructure will have life-threatening statement added, "With this latest order, the area of Gaza under displacement orders or within Israeli-militarised zones has risen to 87.8 percent, leaving 2.1 million civilians squeezed into a fragmented 12 percent of the Strip, where essential services have collapsed." "The new order cuts through Deir al Balah all the way to the Mediterranean Sea, further splintering the Strip. It will limit the ability of the UN and our partners to move safely and effectively within Gaza, choking humanitarian access when it is needed most."

Israel bombs hospital and 4 schools in Gaza as 48 killed
Earlier on Monday, Israeli forces launched airstrikes on tents housing displaced people inside the courtyard of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in central Gaza, Al Jazeera reports. The outlet said that the Israeli army did not issue warnings before it struck tents, reporting that a "huge explosion" could be seen. READ MORE: UK Government wins High Court battle over exports of F-35 parts to Israel It is the 12th time this hospital has been attacked since Israel launched its brutal assault on Gaza in 2023. At least four schools were bombed by Israeli aircraft in Gaza City, after the military ordered thousands of Palestinians sheltering inside to leave. The Israel Defence Force (IDF) said on Monday that it is "operating intensively" and was expanding its military operations in Gaza City, ordering Palestinians to move to the al-Mawasi area in the south of the Strip. According to the United Nations, more than 80% of Gaza is now an Israeli-militarised zone or under forced displacement orders. Among those who were killed overnight and into Monday include people who were waiting for aid. Al Jazeera reports that 10 people were killed while waiting to collect food at an aid distribution warehouse in Gaza City. Elsewhere, medical sources at Nasser Medical Complex said at least 13 people were killed and 50 injured while waiting for aid in Khan Younis, while another two people were killed by Israeli fire near an aid distribution centre in southern Rafah. The latest death toll in Gaza has now risen to 56,531 since October 7 2023, with 133,642 people wounded, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. It comes as dozens of Israeli settlers rampaged around a military base in the Israeli-occupied West Bank on Sunday evening, setting fires, vandalising military vehicles, spraying graffiti and attacking soldiers, the IDF said. The attack was condemned by Israeli politicians who have previously been outspoken in their support of the actions of extremist settlers. READ MORE: Palestine Action takes UK Government to court over use of anti-terror laws Far-right security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said that the attack was "a red line, and must be dealt with in full severity", while defence minister Israel Katz vowed to "eradicate this violence from the root". The unrest came after several attacks in the West Bank carried out by Jewish settlers on Wednesday evening. More than 100 settlers entered the West Bank town of Kfar Malik, setting property ablaze and opening fire on Palestinians who tried to stop them. Mourners carry the bodies of three Palestinians who were killed on Wednesday when Jewish settlers stormed the West Bank village of Kafr Malik (Leo Correa/AP)Three Palestinians were killed after the military intervened, while Israeli security forces arrested five settlers. The West Bank is home to some three million Palestinians who are living under Israeli military rule, and 500,000 Jewish settlers. Since Israel's assault on the enclave intensified in 2023, Palestinians living in the West Bank have reported a major increase in Israeli checkpoints and delays across the territory. The Israeli settlements are widely considered illegal under international law.

Over 680,000 Palestinians forced to relocate amid continuing Israeli strikes
A girl is walking through demolished school in Gaza. PHOTO: REUTERS Listen to article The United Nations announced on Wednesday that more than 680,000 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced across Gaza in the past three months as Israeli military operations continue to intensify. At a press briefing, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric cited the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), revealing that on Tuesday, Israeli authorities issued a new displacement order affecting hundreds of families in the Khan Younis and Deir al-Balah areas. Dujarric highlighted that five primary healthcare centres and three medical points are located within 1,000 metres of the newly designated evacuation zones. OCHA further noted that the expanded displacement zone now covers an additional three square kilometres, bringing the total area under displacement orders or within Israeli-militarised zones to more than 82 per cent of Gaza. The mass displacement has accelerated sharply, with nearly 250,000 people forced to flee in the past 30 days alone, according to the UN. Since October 2023, Israel has conducted a fierce offensive in Gaza, which has resulted in over 55,600 Palestinian deaths, predominantly women and children. In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the Gaza conflict. Additionally, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its military actions in the territory. Attacks on aid sites continue Meanwhile, Gaza's civil defence agency reported that at least 33 people were killed on June 18 by Israeli fire, including 11 civilians queuing for humanitarian aid. Over 100 others were wounded during an attack on a food distribution point in central Gaza, spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP. The Israeli military said its troops fired warning shots after spotting 'a group of suspicious individuals' near the area, but were unaware of any injuries. The incident occurred amid severe shortages of food, fuel, and water in Gaza, where Israel's blockade has remained largely in place since March. On the same day, the civil defence agency said 19 more people were killed in three Israeli strikes targeting homes and a tent sheltering displaced persons. The military said these strikes aimed to dismantle Hamas' military capabilities. Bassal also reported three deaths from an Israeli airstrike northeast of Gaza City. AFP could not independently verify casualty figures due to media restrictions and security concerns. The report followed Tuesday's attack near an aid centre in Khan Yunis, where at least 53 people were killed.
