Italian Gymnast Lorenzo Bonicelli In Recovery After Devastating Spinal Injury

On Thursday, the Italian Gymnastics Federation confirmed that Bonicelli suffered a cervical sprain with subluxation of the fifth vertebra. Although an initial surgery was reportedly successful, Bonicelli is experiencing neurological damage—'the extent of which cannot yet be assessed,' according to the federation. The 23-year-old from Lecco, Italy, is currently breathing through medical ventilation via a tracheotomy. Despite the severity of the injury, Bonicelli is said to be in 'good general condition' as of Thursday, July 31. He will require 'at least another week of hospitalization' before a potential transfer to a rehabilitation facility is considered. The injury happened during the Men's Artistic Gymnastics team final and qualification round at the 2025 FISU Summer World University Games. The Italian team began their competition on floor exercise, followed by pommel horse. In the third rotation, Bonicelli landed short on his dismount, falling on his neck. According to Ginnasticando Italia , medical workers immediately rushed to Bonicelli's side upon injury, eventually carrying the athlete out of the arena on a medical stretcher. The Italian team later withdrew from the entire competition due to the emotional distress inflicted by their teammate's injury. On Thursday, July 24, an FIG official confirmed initial reports of Bonicelli's condition, sharing that the athlete had undergone near-immediate surgery on Wednesday, July 23. Steve Butcher, the Apparatus Supervisor for men's still rings, shared that Bonicelli had gone into a 'medically induced coma after surgery' on July 23. At that time, it was shared that 'it will take 10 or more days' to determine the severity of Bonicelli's injuries. While his recovery evolves, the gymnastics community continues to think of Bonicelli – affectionately known as 'Bonni' – and the entire Italian gymnastics federation.

The shocking incident unfolded during an event that brought together over 8,500 student-athletes competing across 18 sports. Bonicelli was pushing hard to earn a spot on Italy's national team for the upcoming 2025 World Championships in Jakarta. Moreover, Bonicelli's family is also present with him at the University Hospital of Essen. Apart from this, Italy has officially withdrawn from the competition with the athletes set to return to their home country on 27th July. Who Is Lorenzo Bonicelli? The 23-Year-Old Gymnastics Prodigy From Italy Lorenzo Bonicelli is a 23-year-old gymnast from Lecco, Italy, representing the Ghislanzoni GAL gymnastics club. Apart from that, he's also an economics student at Mercatorum University. Bonicelli first gained attention at the 2019 Junior World Championships in Győr, Hungary, where he helped Italy secure a team bronze (score of 159.179 points) alongside Ivan Brunello and Lorenzo Minh Casali, who later competed at the Paris Olympics. His international journey began in 2017 at age 15 at the Austrian Future Cup and continued with another podium finish at the 2019 World Youth Championships. After a break due to the pandemic, Bonicelli returned stronger and played a key role in Italy's qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics at the 2023 World Cup in Antwerp. Though he missed the 2024 European Championships in Leipzig, he remained an integral part of the national team and is considered one of Italy's brightest hopes for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Most recently, Bonicelli competed at the FIG Gymnastics World Cup in Cottbus, Germany, in February 2025. He qualified for the horizontal bar finals and finished fourth with a score of 13.800. Italy have withdrawn from the rest of the World University Games in Essen, Germany, after gymnast Lorenzo Bonicelli suffered a fall during his routine, sustaining a serious neck injury that required surgery, news agency ANSA reported on Friday. Bonicelli remains in intensive care but is stable and his life is not in danger, the Italian Gymnastics Federation (FGI) said, after the 23-year-old was rushed hospital where he underwent surgery following the incident. "From the University Hospital in Essen... we (learned) that today, the athlete, who remained conscious after the accident until the moment of surgery, was awakened from a medically-induced coma and is showing positive signs," the FGI said in a statement on Friday.
