Slovenia Announces 2 Israeli Ministers Persona Non Grata
Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon said that her country declared two far-right Israeli cabinet ministers, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, persona non grata, according to Reuters. Slovenia becomes the first European Union country to take such a decisive step in response to Israeli military operations in Gaza since October 2023 and their mounting violence against Palestinians. The Slovenian government has accused both ministers of making 'genocidal statements' and inciting violence against Palestinians. 'Today, the government adopted one of the first national measures, which is to declare two Israeli ministers… unwanted in the Republic of Slovenia,' Fajon told a news conference. Meanwhile, the Israeli government which has repeatedly rejected accusations of genocide in Gaza, has not issued any response. Crucially, this significant step comes after EU Foreign Ministers' failure to agree on joint action against Israel over charges of human rights violations at a meeting in Brussels on Tuesday. 'This kind of measure is the first of its kind in the European Union. We are breaking new ground,' she said. Slovenia's government issued a statement saying both Ben-Gvir and Smotrich 'publicly advocate the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, the forced evictions of Palestinians, and call for violence against the civilian Palestinian population'. Mounting Pressure in West Bank This decision comes at a crucial time as violence against Palestinians in the West Bank is growing with increasing number of killings and attacks by settlers and security forces. Israeli settlers' violence against Palestinians has sparked anger and frustration towards the US as Palestinians mourned the death of two men, one of them a Palestinian American, killed by settlers. Approximately 1 million Israeli settlers live in illegal settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem in violation of international law. OHCHR noted that settlers have launched 757 attacks on Palestinians or their properties since January 2025. In May, Defense Minister Israel Katz said that Israel planned to build a 'Jewish Israeli state' in the occupied West Bank, according to Al-Arabiya. Katz's remarks followed Israel's announcement of the creation of 22 new settlements in the West Bank. He also noted that the new settlements would be a clear message to French President Emmanuel Macron and his associates: they will recognize a Palestinian state on paper – but Israel will build the Jewish Israeli state here on the ground. Slovenia Bans 2 Israeli Ministers over Extremist Rhetoric
Israa Farhan Slovenia has imposed an unprecedented travel ban within the European Union on two far-right Israeli ministers, citing incitement to violence and serious human rights violations against Palestinians. This move was reported on Thursday following a cabinet decision by the Slovenian government. The ministers, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, both senior figures in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition, have been officially declared persona non grata. According to the government statement, the decision stems from their repeated public remarks supporting genocidal rhetoric, the expansion of illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank, and policies encouraging *ethnic cleansing*, particularly amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon described the move as a first-of-its-kind in the EU, stating it sends a strong message to the Israeli government. The ban aligns Slovenia with countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Norway, which imposed sanctions and travel bans on the same ministers earlier this year. These restrictions, however, were criticized by Washington. Slovenia has taken an increasingly active stance on Middle East diplomacy, especially amid growing international scrutiny of Israel's military actions in Gaza. In 2024, the country joined Ireland, Spain, and Norway in recognizing Palestinian statehood. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

REUTERS/Oren Ben Hakoon/File Photo SARAJEVO - Slovenia declared two far-right Israeli cabinet ministers, Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, persona non grata on Thursday, the first European Union country to do so, Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon said. The government accused Israel's national security minister Ben-Gvir and finance minister Smotrich - both West Bank settlers - of making "genocidal statements" and inciting violence against Palestinians. There was no immediate reaction from Israel's government which has regularly rejected accusations of genocide in Gaza, and says it is acting in self-defence following the deadly October 7, 2023, attack led by Hamas militants. Fajon said Slovenia had decided to make the move after EU foreign ministers did not agree on joint action against Israel over charges of human rights violations at a meeting in Brussels on Tuesday. "Today, the government adopted one of the first national measures, which is to declare two Israeli ministers... unwanted in the Republic of Slovenia," Fajon told a news conference. "This kind of measure is the first of its kind in the European Union. We are breaking new ground," she said. Other measures were being prepared, she added, without going into detail. Slovenia's government issued a statement saying the ministers "publicly advocate the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, the forced evictions of Palestinians, and call for violence against the civilian Palestinian population". Envoy's definition won't conflate antisemitism with criticising Israel
Of course, political criticism of Israel is legitimate, even warranted sometimes. But antisemitism, a term for anti-Jewish racism and hatred, is not. That is at the heart of Australia's antisemitism envoy Jillian Segal's call for effective education, monitoring and management of those who overstep the mark. In Australia, criticism of Israel is commonplace. Deserved criticism of the wild men in the Israeli cabinet, including Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, for their racist statements about Palestinians is a case in point.

14 Jul 2025 12:59 PM Ben-Gvir says humanitarian city plan is ‘spin' for ceasefire deal
Far-right Israeli security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, says the outrage about the 'humanitarian city' is 'spin' aiming to hide the ceasefire deal that is currently being negotiated. Over the past week, Israel and Hamas have been negotiating, through mediators, to secure a ceasefire deal. According to reports, the main issue being discussed is the Israeli army's withdrawal from the enclave during the ceasefire.
