Dozens left stranded by Hong Kong's Cathay after flight from New York cancelled

Dozens of angry passengers were left without accommodation after Cathay Pacific Airways cancelled a flight from New York to Hong Kong at the last minute because of a 'technical issue', the Post has learned, and the airline must now submit an investigation report to aviation authorities. The cancellation, which was announced to affected passengers an hour after flight CX843 was scheduled to depart at 1.55am (New York time), left passengers scrambling to find hotels without any offer of support from the airline, according to affected users on social media. They were later told to board another flight a day and a half later. The Civil Aviation Department (CAD) told the Post this week that Cathay had notified it about the incident and would 'submit an investigation report in accordance with the reporting system under the Air Navigation (Hong Kong) Order 1995.' The regulation outlines a mandatory reporting system for incidents and occurrences related to aircraft operations in Hong Kong, requiring airlines to report specified incidents to the CAD within 96 hours. 'The CAD will continue to closely monitor the operating and maintenance standards of our local airlines to ensure that the relevant safety standards and requirements are met,' it said. Images posted by an angry passenger on Chinese social media platform RedNote showed dozens of customers surrounding Cathay staff at John F. Kennedy International Airport's gate counter in New York and inquiring about the flight last Saturday.

Heatwaves scorch millions across the East Coast with New York City and Boston seeing highs of over 100F

Extreme heatwaves scorched parts of the U.S. on Tuesday, including on the east coast, where several major cities including New York and Boston climbed to triple-digit temperatures. John F Kennedy International Airport recorded 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38C) at midday – the first time since 2013 – according to the National Weather Service, which described conditions as 'extremely dangerous.' The oppressive heat hit the Big Apple as residents headed to the polls to vote in the city's Democratic primary election for city mayor. Nearly 40 US cities broke record high marks on Monday, including Philadelphia, Baltimore and Raleigh, North Carolina, which all broke daily heat records with temperatures of 99 degrees (37C), 104 degrees (40C) and 100 degrees, respectively. The NWS previously predicted dozens more records Tuesday as the peak of the 'heat dome' – a weather phenomenon where high pressure in the upper atmosphere acts like a lid, trapping heat and causing extreme temperatures and humidity over a specific area. More than 150 million people were placed under heat warnings, with very warm overnight lows expected to continue through Wednesday, according to the NWS. 'Every East Coast state today from Maine to Florida has a chance of 100 degree actual temperature,' private meteorologist Ryan Maue, a former National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration chief scientist, said on Tuesday. 'Getting Maine to 100 degrees is infrequent.' Also joined New York in the 100F club were Boston and Philadelphia, both of which recorded temperatures matching or exceeding it throughout Tuesday. Similarly, Washington D.C., hit 101F (38.3C) by 2 p.m., according to Accuweather. Amtrak reported delays Tuesday due to speed restrictions caused by the heat on routes that went through Washington, Philadelphia and New York. Several meteorologists told The Associated Press that the heat wave is especially threatening to residents in those cities due to its arrival early in the summer when people haven't gotten their bodies adapted to the broiling conditions. Elsewhere, two 16-year-old hikers were rescued from a mountain in Jaffrey, New Hampshire, late Monday afternoon, after being overcome by the heat, according to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. They were described as being in and out of consciousness and taken to a hospital.

Opening date revealed for Capital One's new ‘flagship' lounge at JFK Airport

Traveling through New York's JFK Airport is now a little more luxurious, thanks to Capital One's newest lounge. The credit card company opened its "flagship" lounge location - its largest lounge to date - in JFK's Terminal 4 on June 19. Inside the 13,500-square-foot space, travelers will find modern and sophisticated areas to eat, drink, and relax, all of which are designed after iconic New York City sights, like a sleek Manhattan-themed bar and a dining area inspired by Central Park. Travelers will also find a New York bodega-style deli counter, where they can order coffee drinks from Bean & Bean Coffee Roaster, authentic New York bagels from Ess-a-Bagel, chopped salads, egg sandwiches, and more. An interactive cheesemonger experience from Manhattan-based Murray's Cheeses offers curated cheese boards and charcuterie, paired with seasonal wines and beers. Open 24 hours a day, the new lounge also offers a "midnight snack" meal service of late-night bites, which will be exclusive to the JFK location as "an ode to the city that never sleeps," according to Capital One. In terms of amenities, the flagship space will offer reservable work rooms, a parents room with bottle warmers and comfortable chairs, a shower suite with plush towels and Dyson hair dryers that can be reserved by QR code, plenty of tables, comfortable chairs, and "the most expansive tarmac views of any Capital One lounge," the company said. The lounge is located on the lower level of Terminal 4's retail hall and is open 24 hours a day. Travelers with a boarding pass for a same-day flight can enter the lounge up to three hours before departure. To receive complimentary access to the space, travelers must be a Capital One Venture X or Venture X Business card holder. Travelers with the Capital One Venture and Spark Miles cards can access the lounge at a discounted rate of $45. All other travelers can pay a $90 fee to enter the space. The JFK lounge is the fifth location in the Capital One Lounge network, which also has outposts at Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Washington Dulles (IAD), Denver (DEN), and Las Vegas (LAS). The company also has a single Capital One Landing lounge concept at Washington D.C.'s Reagan National Airport (DCA), and a second Landing location is coming soon to New York LaGuardia's (LGA) Terminal B. ___________ Copyright (C) 2025, Tribune Content Agency, LLC. First electric passenger plane lands at JFK in milestone flight

It's not every day aviation history is made, but June 2025 marked a real milestone for New York and the world of electric flight. For the first time, a passenger-carrying electric airplane landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport, and it wasn't just a test. There were actual people on board. Sign up for my FREE CyberGuy ReportGet my best tech tips, urgent security alerts and exclusive deals delivered straight to your inbox. Plus, you'll get instant access to my Ultimate Scam Survival Guide — free when you join. Kyle Clark, founder and CEO of Beta Technologies, was at the controls as the company's electric aircraft flew from East Hampton to JFK. With four passengers on board, the trip covered about 70 nautical miles in just over half an hour. That's right, a fully electric plane, carrying people, quietly and efficiently making its way through the skies above New York. Clark put it simply, "This is a 100% electric airplane that just flew from East Hampton to JFK with passengers on it, which was a first for the New York Port Authority and the New York area. We covered 70 odd nautical miles in 35 minutes." The message this sent was clear that electric air travel is here, and it's practical. The real takeaway isn't just the novelty of the flight, but what it means for the future of getting around. Electric aircraft like this one are quiet, which means happier communities near airports. They're also much cheaper to operate. As Clark noted, "Charging this thing up and flying out here cost us about $8 in fuel. Of course, you have to pay for the pilot and the airplane, but, fundamentally, it's way less expensive." Passengers on the flight could talk to each other the whole time, thanks to the lack of noisy engines and propellers. That kind of comfort and accessibility is exactly what could make electric air travel a hit with commuters and travelers looking for a better way to get from one point to another. Transportation companies are already eyeing electric battery-powered aircraft for short city trips, especially those that can take off and land vertically. The idea is to help travelers beat traffic and reduce emissions, all while offering a smoother, quieter ride. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has also stepped in, finalizing new rules in October for pilot training and certification for air taxis. This move was described as "the final piece in the puzzle for safely introducing these aircraft in the near term." With regulations in place and companies like Beta Technologies pushing forward, the dream of electric air taxis is closer than ever. Beta Technologies, based in Vermont and founded in 2017, is at the forefront of this movement. The company recently raised $318 million to fund production, certification and commercialization of its electric aircraft, bringing its total funding to over $1 billion. It's not just building planes. It's building the infrastructure needed to support electric flight across the country. The success of this flight is a strong signal that electric air travel is becoming a practical option, not just a futuristic idea. Beta's aircraft can fly up to 250 nautical miles on a single charge, making it ideal for short hops between cities and suburbs. As more companies join the effort and more charging stations are built, it's easy to see how electric air travel could become a regular part of how we get around, especially in busy urban areas. So, what's the real story here? The first passenger-carrying electric airplane touching down at JFK is way more than a cool headline. It's proof that electric air travel isn't just some futuristic thing. It's actually here, it works and it's ready to shake up how we get around. With rules that make sense, plenty of investment and people getting more curious and excited, the future of clean, quiet and easy-to-access air travel is looking pretty promising.
