Rare three-coloured langur spotted with offspring in Sarawak
KUCHING: The recent sighting of a critically endangered three-coloured langur and its offspring offers strong evidence that the species is still reproducing naturally in the wild. Senior Sarawak Forestry Department (JHS) researcher, Dr Ahmad Ampeng, said the finding indicates a possible recovery in the population of this highly threatened species, thanks to ongoing conservation efforts. He praised the Sarawak government's decision to gazette an 845-hectare area in Sungai Selai Inah, Jemoreng, Matu, as a Permanent Forest Reserve, highlighting its ecological importance. "Previously, we observed that the three‑coloured langur population was growing very slowly, "However, when camera‑trap footage showed a female langur with her infant, this was a very positive development." he said. Ahmad explained the difficulty in observing the species directly, as they are highly sensitive to human scent. To avoid detection, researchers wore the same unlaundered clothing for months and refrained from using any scented products. "If the expedition lasted three months in the forest, we wore the same clothes for that entire period," he said, adding that the langurs also react to noise, such as camera shutters. "Even a single camera click can startle them into running away, which is why we installed silent video‑trapping cameras on trees." The three-coloured langur is classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and is fully protected under the 1998 Sarawak Wildlife Protection Ordinance. Previously, the species had only been recorded in the Maludam Forest Reserve in Betong Division in 1832, 192 years ago. Ahmad and his team from JHS confirmed the langur's reappearance using camera-trap footage gathered during their intensive survey, which began in July 2022. The remarkable discovery was published on Marc 27h 2024 in the peer-reviewed journal Check List The Journal of Biodiversity Data

Tuyut gets new Mini FoSCC to boost forest compliance, enforcement in rural Sarawak
Hamden signs a plaque to officiate the event while others look on. MIRI (May 9): The Sarawak Forest Department has launched a new Mini Forest One Stop Compliance Centre (FoSCC) in Tuyut to enhance sustainable forest management and strengthen enforcement in remote areas. The ceremony was officiated by the Forest Department Sarawak director Datu Hamden Mohammad, who expressed gratitude to all attendees and partners involved in establishing the facility. 'The presence of this mini FoSCC is highly meaningful in supporting the JHS' continuous efforts to manage forests sustainably and with integrity,' he said. The newly launched facility will serve as a vital platform for license holders and forest officers, streamlining processes related to compliance, enforcement, and timber audit. First introduced in 2017, the FoSCC concept decentralises forest department operations, particularly in rural areas, to reduce the need for long-distance travel among stakeholders. The Tuyut branch is part of a broader initiative under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which includes the upgrading of five FoSCCs. These upgraded centres feature mobile container-based offices equipped with solar power, clean water supply, basic furniture, and ICT facilities. 'This initiative also aims to address compliance gaps and prevent revenue leakages in forest revenue management while improving environmental conservation overall,' Hamden added. He stressed that regular patrols, transparency, and strong governance remain central to the department's efforts to combat illegal logging and promote good forestry practices. To date, 30 FoSCCs and six Forest Checking Stations (FCS) are operational and play a key role in daily enforcement and licensing activities. Hamden expressed hope that the new facility would benefit both the department and the surrounding community by promoting more efficient and responsible forest management. 'Let us continue to work hand in hand – government agencies, local communities, and all stakeholders – to safeguard Sarawak's forests for future generations,' he said.

'I'm going into engineering, so at first, like, I didn't really think that law and judiciary really mattered to me, but he did, like, spark in us a desire to know more, and to be more active, like, voters and participants in the law, and this is an excellent way to be a more active participant in the law,' said Josiah Hazlewood, JHS senior. 'Not everybody is going to be an author, not everybody is going to design buildings, not everybody is going to be able to produce movies, but everyone has to be a citizen, and that's why this is really, really important,' said William G. Keczkemethy, JHS Constitution Team Coach. 'Every person should learn about the constitution, and unfortunately studies have shown that the public's knowledge about the constitution, and about the branches of the government has declined, so I'm excited to see that these kids are excelling,' said Shelly Dreyer, Mo. Joplin School District starts peer learning summit for educators
JOPLIN, Mo. — The Joplin School District has launched its first ever peer-to-peer learning opportunity for educators. The 'Joplin Connect Summit' highlights teachers already on staff – and how they can share their experience with others. Sessions Friday involved things like math – software – and the role technology plays in schools. Having the expert within the school district also means it's easier to follow up if there are questions down the road. 'They're within walking distance for everyone in the building. Or an email. Or a quick phone call. It's going to build that community you want in a high school, and that's the secondary part,' said JHS Principal Dr. Randy Oliver. Middle and high school staff members were part of sessions at the high school – while pre and elementary teachers worked out of East Middle School and Soaring Heights Elementary.
