Watch: Omar Abdullah scales Martyrs' Memorial wall a day after alleged house arrest

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Monday slipped through security barricades and jumped over the boundary wall of Mazar-e-Shuhada (Martyrs Memorial) to pay tributes to Kashmiris killed while protesting Dogra rule in 1931. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah pays tribute to July 13 martyrs at Naqshband Sahib graveyard in Old City of Srinagar, Monday, July 14, 2025. A day after being locked indoors, J-K CM and other JKNC leaders on Monday slipped through security barricades to pay tributes at the graveyard.(PTI) Omar Abdullah said that he was stopped by the security forces from reaching the memorial in the Old City of Srinagar. Jammu and Kashmir observed Martyrs on Sunday, July 13. The CM said he came on Monday without informing anyone, as he wasn't allowed to do so on Sunday, and claimed that he was put under house arrest. Watch | Omar Abdullah scales wall to enter Matryrs' Memorial "It is unfortunate that by the orders of those who claim their responsibility is to maintain law and order, We were not allowed to read the Fatiha here yesterday. People were kept confined to their homes. When the gates were opened and I informed the control room that I wanted to come here, a bunker was set up in front of my gate and it was not removed till late at night. Today I did not tell them at all. Without telling them, I sat into the car (and drove here)," Abdullah said. The National Conference leader said that the security forces tried to stop him from reaching the memorial even today, and asked under which law it was done. 'Look at their shamelessness. Even today, they tried to stop us. We parked the car at Nowhatta Chowk. They put a bunker in front of us and tried to manhandle us. These policemen in uniform sometimes forget the law. I want to ask them, under which law did they try to stop us today? The restrictions were for yesterday. They say this is a free country, but sometimes they think we are their slaves. We are not anyone's slaves. If we are slaves, we are the people's slaves,' he added. Why is July 13 Martyrs Day in Jammu and Kashmir? A group of Kashmiri protestors were shot at by the forces of the then-Maharaja Hari Singh Dogra outside the Srinagar jail on July 13, 1931. The protestors supported Abdul Qadeer, who was lodged in jail for calling on Kashmiris to rise against the Dogra ruler and was charged with sedition. Twenty-two protestors were killed in the firing on that day. For the past 70 years, July 13 has been observed as a historic day in Kashmir and is marked as the first political awakening of Kashmir.

Omar Abdullah Calls Newspapers "Cowards" For Not Reporting House Arrest

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday expressed anguish over the missing media coverage in local newspapers on the issue of "the entire elected government being locked up". Mr Abdullah accused some newspapers of burying the news story about several elected representatives being confined to their homes on the Kashmir Martyrs' Day, as alleged by Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) chief spokesperson and Zadibal MLA Tanvir Sadiq as well. "Take a look at our local newspapers - both from Jammu and from Srinagar, English & vernacular. You'll be able to distinguish the cowards from the ones with guts. The cowards have completely buried the fact that the entire elected government was locked up yesterday, along with most elected representatives. The newspapers with some guts have put it on the front page. Shame on the sellouts who buried the story, I hope the size of the envelope was worth it," Mr Abdullah posted on X. Taking to X, the Chief Minister shared pictures of police outside his residence, with armoured vehicles parked and movement restricted, as the regional parties, including the National Conference (NC), were denied permission to visit the martyrs' graveyard in Srinagar. "To borrow from the late Arun Jaitley Sb - Democracy in J&K is a tyranny of the unelected. To put it in terms you will all understand today the unelected nominees of New Delhi locked up the elected representatives of the people of J-K," Mr Abdullah wrote in a post on X. Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLA Mohamad Yousuf Tarigami also posted on X, saying, "A padlock on my gate, placed under house arrest and denied the right to pay homage to the July 13 martyrs. This day is etched in our collective memory -- a reminder of those who laid down their lives for the restoration of democracy and a better future for us all," JKNC's Sadiq alleged that several party leaders had been confined to their homes to stop them from paying tribute to the martyrs. "Since last night, I like many of my colleagues, including the party leadership at Gupkar, the Advisor to the Chief Minister, and a majority of sitting MLAs have been locked inside my home. This is not just unfortunate; it is a deliberate attempt to suppress remembrance and deny us the right to honour the martyrs of July 13. Such actions are not only unnecessary they are unjustified, deeply insensitive, and reveal a troubling disregard for history," Sadiq posted on X. After not being allowed to visit the martyrs graveyard, People's Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti said that the "dil ki doori (distance of hearts)" between Kashmir and the rest of India would end when the Centre accepts Kashmir's heroes as its own, just as Kashmiris have embraced national figures. "The day you accept our heroes as your own just as Kashmiris have embraced yours, from Mahatma Gandhi to Bhagat Sing, that day, as Prime Minister Modi once said, the 'dil ki doori' (distance of hearts) will truly end," the PDP chief wrote on X. "When you lay siege to the Martyrs' Graveyard, lock people in their homes to prevent them from visiting Mazar-e-Shuhada, it speaks volumes. July 13th commemorates our martyrs, those who rose against tyranny, much like countless others across the country. They will always be our heroes," she added. Martyrs' Day in Kashmir was earlier an official holiday in the state; it was delisted after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.

"Message of Karbala is observed even to this day": JKNC MLA Tanvir Sadiq on Ashura

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], July 6 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) Chief Spokesperson and MLA Tanvir Sadiq, on the occasion of Ashura, said that the message of Karbala continues to inspire even after 1,400 years. He said that following the values of Imam Hussain helps in fighting evil and building a better society. Speaking to ANI, Tanvir Sadiq said, 'The message of Karbala is observed even to this after 1,400 years, the message is the same, if you want to end evil, inculcate the message of Imam Hussain and Karbala in your heart, in your life. So that we form a good society.' 'Innocent people in Palestine are fighting for their rights. Iran showed the entire world that those who walk the path of the Almighty will never weaken,' Sadiq said. Notably, for the first time in over three decades, restored in 2023, the Jammu and Kashmir government permitted a Muharram procession in Srinagar, it was banned over 35 years after the eruption of militancy in Kashmir as authorities were apprehensive that separatists might misuse the large gathering for ulterior motives. The permission for the Muharram procession in Srinagar after a long ban is a significant milestone, signifying progress towards religious freedom in the region. It emphasized the need to respect the religious sentiments of the people and uphold the values of inclusivity and unity among different communities in the valley. Muharram commemorates the sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain, the son of Hazrat Ali and the grandson of Prophet Muhammad. It signifies an expression of sorrow over the killing of Imam Hussain at the Battle of Karbala that took place over 14 centuries ago. Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, reaches a crescendo on the 10th day of Muharram, the day when Imam Hussain Ibn Ali and his followers were martyred in 61 Hijri or 680 CE at Karbala, in present-day Iraq. The tenth day of Muharram is the Day of Ashura, which, to Shia Muslims, is part of the mourning of Muharram. Sunni Muslims fast on this day. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also said that the sacrifices made by Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) emphasise his commitment to righteousness. He inspired people to uphold truth in the face of adversity, the PM added. 'The sacrifices made by Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) emphasise his commitment to righteousness. JKNC MP Mian Altaf Ahmad Larvi pays tribute

Ganderbal (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 8 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) MP Mian Altaf Ahmad Larvi on Sunday paid tributes at the 129th Urs of Mian Nizam-u-Din Kiyanvi (RA) and highlighted the saint's message of unity and spiritual wisdom. Devotees from various parts of the country gathered at Baba Nagri, Wangat Kangan to offer prayers at the revered shrine of Mian Nizam-u-Din Kiyanvi (RA) during the 129th Urs. The atmosphere was filled with spiritual devotion as people paid their respects and sought blessings. Many devotees expressed deep gratitude for being able to attend the annual event, calling it a spiritually uplifting experience that strengthens their faith and connection to the Sufi saint's teachings. On Tuesday, National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah welcomed the celebration of both the Kheer Bhawani Mela and the Urs of Hazrat Mir Syed Ali Hamdani, calling it a symbol of communal harmony in Kashmir. He stressed the importance of unity for national progress. Speaking to ANI, Farooq Abdullah said, 'It is a matter of joy that the mela of Kheer Bhawani and Urs of Hazrat Mir Syed Ali Hamdani are being celebrated today. There has always been brotherhood in the valley. We want to see this brotherhood across the country. If we stay united, we will progress.' The Kheer Bhawani Mela is an important annual religious festival for the Kashmiri Pandit community. It is held at the Kheer Bhawani Temple in Tulla Mulla village of Ganderbal district. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Ragnya Devi, a form of Goddess Durga, and is considered one of the holiest sites for Kashmiri Hindus. Abdullah also appealed to devotees to visit the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra, expressing concern over the drop in pilgrim numbers following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. 'We should go to Mata Vaishno Devi in Katra and appeal to the people to visit there. There has been a decrease in the number of devotees to Mata Vaishno Devi. People are scared after the tragedy of war that took place recently. The impact of the Pahalgam incident was seen throughout the country,' Abdullah told ANI. (ANI)
