Bukit Gambir residents join hands for clean-up to beat dengue
CONCERNED residents in Taman Jade View, Bukit Gambir, banded together for a gotong-royong in a bid to contain the dengue outbreak in their area. The high-rise residential property located in Gelugor became Penang's sole hotspot after recording 17 dengue cases in just a month. The clean-up effort saw some 30 residents taking part to clear the apartment grounds, flushing drains, trimming overgrown trees as well as removing dead stumps and bulk waste, with assistance from the Penang Island City Council (MBPP). Hu hopes increased awareness among residents will help contain and halt the spread of joint management body (JMB) chairman Alan Hu said the 17 dengue cases were recorded within the past 30 days, all involving residents of the apartment complex. 'There are about 2,000 residents living in 496 units across seven blocks,' he said, while describing the outbreak as 'alarming'. 'We are also surrounded by four factories and two ongoing condominium projects. 'Rain, overgrown trees and stagnant water at the construction sites create the perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes.' Hu expressed hope that the gotong-royong and increased awareness among residents would help contain and halt the spread of dengue here in Taman Jade View. Hu added that two residents tested positive for dengue through rapid tests conducted on 61 individuals recently. Health department officers also set up booths during the clean-up to educate residents on dengue prevention. One of the key messages shared was that the Aedes mosquito, which spreads dengue, can complete its life cycle in just a week under ideal conditions, while its eggs can remain dormant and active for up to six months in dry environments. MBPP councillor Chan Soon Aun said while the city council would increase surveillance and work with health authorities to destroy mosquito breeding spots, another concern was the irresponsible feeding of stray dogs in the area. 'We found food waste and containers left along the roads behind the neighbourhood. 'These containers collect stagnant water and become mosquito breeding sites, while the strays have been multiplying. 'We estimate there are at least 50 stray dogs roaming this area and scavenging for food,' he said. Penang youth, sports and health committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen said as of June 28, dengue cases in the state had dropped by 62% compared to the same corresponding period last year. 'A total of 1,025 dengue cases have been recorded this year, down from 2,685 cases during the same period last year. 'At the moment, Taman Jade View is the only dengue hotspot in Penang, and health authorities are keeping a close watch,' he said. Gooi also noted a slight decline in Covid-19 cases during the 26th epidemiological week from June 22 to 28. A total of 240 cases were reported in Penang, compared to 243 cases the previous week.

Barrios fight ‘mission accomplished' for Manny Pacquiao despite draw, says analyst
Though the fight between Manny Pacquiao and WBC world welterweight champion Mario Barrios ended in a majority draw, it's still mission accomplished for the Filipino boxing legend, according to veteran boxing analyst Atty. Ed Tolentino. Pacquiao, 46, showed flashes of his younger self against Barrios, showcasing his trademark speed and combinations. Despite his efforts, however, Barrios retained the belt when two of the judges scored the fight 114-114 after twelve rounds of action. The third judge had it 115-113 for Barrios. "I had it 115-113 on my scorecard. Manny Pacquiao should have won this fight. That is what I think, and so do many experts and fans. I thought Barrios respected too much and was hesitant because he was getting hit," Tolentino said in an episode of Sparring Sessions LIVE. "Pacquiao was impressive for a 46-year-old. For a 46-year-old to go twelve hard rounds with a fighter who is only 30 years old, to me, it is already mission accomplished. It hurts to think that he did not get the decision. I do not understand what the judges saw or it did not see in this fight." Tolentino added that the fight was close and, in reality, could have gone either way. Yet for Tolentino, if someone deserved the nod, it had to be Pacquiao for pressing the action throughout the contest. "It was Manny Pacquiao who really wanted to win the fight not Mario Barrios. I thought even though Pacquiao was handicapped at 46 and 4 years of inactivity, he was there to compete and ready to bring the fight to Mario Barrios," Tolentino stated. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

Developer, 6 others ordered to return RM1.13mil to JMB
The Ipoh High Court also ordered a forensic audit to be conducted after the plaintiffs were found to have proven their case on the balance of probabilities. PETALING JAYA : The High Court in Ipoh has ordered a property developer and six other defendants to refund RM1.13 million to a joint management body (JMB) after the sum was paid out for improper purposes. The developer, Haven Sdn Bhd, was also ordered to pay rental despite previously securing a 10-year rent-free concession from the JMB. Justice Abdul Wahab Mohamed said the eight plaintiffs, comprising residents and condominium owners of Haven Lakeside Residences in Tambun, had proven their case on a balance of probabilities. The eight filed the suit in 2020, claiming that the defendants had used the JMB's sinking fund to pay land amalgamation premiums and build a tennis court. About RM950,000 was paid towards the premiums, while another RM180,000 was utilised to build the tennis court. The court also found that the JMB had improperly given the developer a 10-year rent-free lease of a section of the common property, which was used to run a spa and restaurant. The six other defendants against whom judgment was entered were the joint management council (JMC), its former chairman Megat Najmuddin Megat Khas, JMC members Peter Chan and Amy Lau, the JMB, and land owner Superboom Sdn Bhd. Wahab ordered the defendants, except the JMB, to pay RM100,000 in costs to the plaintiffs. He also ordered that a forensic audit be conducted, but granted the defendants an interim stay of his ruling. Lawyer Patrick Samuel Sebastian appeared for the plaintiffs while counsel Rabinder Singh and Surindar Singh acted for the defendants.

2 held for creating fake Aadhaar, lens on terror links
Kolkata: The Bengal STF has arrested owners of a mobile shop on Birbhum for allegedly creating fake Aadhaar cards, using forged documents, in exchange for money. Sheikh Miraj and Abdul Quddus, alias Sheikh Munna, were rounded up from Sattor in Parui on Sunday. An STF officer said they were investigating their possible links with Bangladeshi terror agencies, given that two arrested JMB men—Saab Sheikh alias Saab Rabbi, also an Ansarullah Bangla Team terror cell member—frequented Sattor. "Miraj and Munna might have been helping the Pakistani spy network, with fake Aadhaars being used to get Indian SIMs," said the officer. The two were presented in the Bidhannagar court on Monday and sent to seven-day police custody. ‘Preparing For Jihad': Pakistan Taliban's Grip Spreads To Bangladesh, 2 Held Over Terror Links
In his reported confession to police, Foysal admitted he was 'inspired by the ideology of TTP" and had traveled to Afghanistan via Pakistan in October 2024 along with Ahmed Jubair, a 23-year-old from Savar, who was later killed in a Pakistan army operation in Waziristan. Foysal also claimed that key accused Engineer Imran Haider had played a central role in 'recruiting and motivating Bangladeshi youths for the TTP." According to the case details, Foysal and the other accused, including Rezaul Karim Abrar, Asif Adnan, Zakaria Masud, and Md Sanaf Hasan, were allegedly 'spreading TTP ideology online and preparing for jihad". The phrase 'preparing for jihad" featured explicitly in the charge sheet accessed by the Dhaka Tribune, highlighting how the group was not just sharing radical content but actively pushing towards recruitment and militant training. In a separate operation on July 14, Shamin Mahfuz, 48, a former leader of banned outfits JMB and Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya, was arrested in Narayanganj by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and handed over to the ATU. Although not named in Foysal's case, Shamin's alleged TTP links emerged during interrogation. With a long history of militancy cases, arms training, and reported efforts to set up extremist camps in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, Shamin is also known for his connections with separatist groups like the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF). He had been out on bail since October 2024.
