Jamia Millia Islamia clarifies faculty recruitment details through corrigendum

Jamia Millia Islamia Recruitment 2025: The Registrar's Office of the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has released a corrigendum to its earlier advertisement (No. 04/2025-26 dated July 3, 2025) regarding the engagement of contractual assistant professors and guest faculty for the 2025-26 academic session. The corrigendum, dated July 9, 2025, outlines several modifications in faculty requirements across multiple departments. The last date to register for the positions is July 14. For the department of social work, the corrigendum clarifies that the single Assistant Professor (Contractual) post previously advertised will now be specifically for teaching BA (Hons) Social Work and MA (Social Work). Additionally, of the four Guest Faculty positions earlier listed, three will be designated for MA (Social Work) and for teaching Multidisciplinary Courses (MDC) and Value Added Courses (VAC) at the undergraduate level and one guest faculty member will be appointed to teach Financial Management, particularly for students of MA (Human Resource Management), with subject specialisation required. In the department of Persian, the original notice mentioned one Guest Faculty each for Persian and Pashto (both part-time courses). However, the revised notice now consolidates this to only one Guest Faculty member for Persian/Pashto to serve the part-time course. In the AJK Mass Communication Research Centre (AJK-MCRC), for the MA Convergent Journalism (Self-Financed Scheme) programme, the corrigendum amends the faculty requirement to two Guest Faculty positions, with specific teaching responsibilities – one for Print Media Software and one for Television and Video Journalism. In the department of hospital management and hospice studies, the revised structure includes two assistant professors (contractual), one for MBA Pharmaceutical Management and one guest faculty. The vacancy in the department of Applied Art is now revised to one assistant professor (Contractual) with specialisation in Computer Software-based design, UI/UX Design, or Web-based applications relevant to modern graphic design. Three guest faculty for illustration, packaging, typography, and design for advertising and product. Applicants must be well-versed in 2D/3D animation, digital media, and contemporary design education. 'Other terms and conditions of the said advertisement will remain same,' JMI added while releasing the corrigendum.

Jamia Millia Islamia gets approval to establish Department of Library and Information Science

New Delhi [India], July 1 (ANI): After nearly four decades, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is poised to establish a Department of Library and Information Science, following the Ministry of Education, Government of India's recent approval of six teaching posts for the university. According to a statement from the university, this is a remarkable expansion, given that since 1985, JMI has been running the Bachelor of Library and Information Science ( course without permanent faculty members. The sanctioning of these faculty positions will infuse fresh energy and vitality into the much sought-after programme. Vice Chancellor of JMI, Prof. Mazhar Asif, and Registrar Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi expressed their gratitude to the Prime Minister, the Union Education Minister, the Ministry of Finance, and the University Grants Commission (UGC) for their support and approval of the university's proposal to establish a Department of Library and Information Science. They stated that this support has played a key role in enabling the expansion, which will enhance JMI's academic structure and contribute to the development of the field of library sciences. Furthermore, Prof. Asif and Prof. Rizvi congratulated the JMI fraternity on this significant augmentation to the current teaching and dissemination of skills in the field of library and information sciences. Prof. Asif, expressing his views on the development, said, 'Being a cornerstone of academic life on campus, libraries shape the trajectory of research and are central to advancing knowledge, especially in the information age. My vision is to strengthen teaching in librarianship and information science by setting up a full-fledged department of library sciences to train the next generation of highly skilled and learned librarians who can do justice to our rich collection of books, rare manuscripts, and journals, as well as embrace modern techniques to remain relevant and cutting-edge in a digital milieu.' He added, 'Not only will the faculty and students of this proposed department contribute to advancing the study of the Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), but also its digitisation and preservation for the future.' Prof. Rizvi, Registrar of JMI, congratulated the university community on the development and said, 'Libraries serve as a focal point of a university and hold tremendous significance, more so at a time when the world is witnessing rapid technological advancement. It has far-reaching implications for how knowledge and information will be stored, curated, organised, and retrieved in the future.' 'To that end, it is imperative that we train and equip our students and researchers with the tools, skill sets, theoretical understanding, and practical insights so that JMI can emerge as a leader in the discipline of library and information sciences. So far, JMI has been offering limited teaching in this important area with the help of guest faculty and contractual staff. With the addition of teaching faculty, JMI will soon offer courses that address contemporary issues and challenges in a data-driven world,' Rizvi said. It is worth noting that this development will give a significant boost to the 105-year-old university, whose Central Library was established in 1920, the year of its founding. (ANI)

Post-CAA stir and pandemic lull, uptick in student clashes at Jamia

New Delhi: After a relatively quiet period following the 2019 anti-CAA protests and the lull caused by the pandemic, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has seen a sharp rise in student clashes, with 42 incidents reported in two years – 2023 and 2024 -- reveals an RTI query. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In comparison, the university saw no clashes in 2020 and 2021. Between Jan 2019 and Dec 2024, a total of 55 student clashes were reported. In 2019, the year that saw the university become a focal point of the nationwide agitation against CAA, six incidents were reported. JMI students held sustained protests, with police entering the campus library on Dec 15, sparking outrage across the country. In the following two years, during Covid and the lockdown, no incidents were recorded. While 2022 saw seven incidents, there were 22 reported clashes in 2023 and 20 in 2024. According to the RTI data, the nature of recent incidents is broadly described as "altercations", mostly taking place on the main campus. In 2023, 10 such clashes occurred between Jan and May. The trend continued in 2024, with 11 incidents reported between Jan and July. While the RTI response does not elaborate on the causes of each incident, the records confirm they were officially registered by university authorities. The rise in clashes has been accompanied by a marked increase in disciplinary measures. The number of students who faced action jumped from 17 in 2019 to 47 in 2022, 105 in 2023, and 74 in 2024 — a total of 243 students over four years. The actions ranged from warnings and show-cause notices to suspensions and campus bans. In 2023, Jamia issued 71 show-cause notices, asked 21 students to sign good conduct bonds and banned three from campus. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In 2024, 56 students were issued show-cause, eight put on good conduct bonds, four suspended, and one was banned from the campus. No disciplinary action was taken in 2020 and 2021, the years in which no clashes were reported. Police were involved twice — in 2019 and 2024 — to "restore order and ensure safety", according to the university. Over the six-year period, five FIRs were registered in connection with the altercations — one in 2019 and four in 2024. The FIRs were filed under sections relating to 'causing hurt', though the university declined to disclose specific provisions, citing Section 8(1)(h) of RTI Act, which exempts details that could impede an investigation. Jamia also stated that details on whether any students were detained or arrested were "not available". Between 2019 and 2024, Jamia collected a total of Rs 27,000 in fines. This includes Rs 7,000 in 2019; Rs 4,000 in 2022; Rs 12,500 in 2023; and Rs 3,500 in 2024. No fines were collected in 2020 or 2021. The university's RTI reply does not specify if the clashes were linked to political groups or factions active on campus. Jamia has not held students' union elections since 2006, though student collectives and informal groupings continue to exist. While the RTI data confirms a clear uptick in student unrest on Jamia's campus post-2022 compared to the pandemic years, the university has largely relied on internal disciplinary mechanisms to address the clashes. With fines remaining symbolic and police action minimal, the data reflects a cautious administrative approach.
