Maharashtra Sets Sail For Maritime Jobs: Rs 120 Cr Foreign Investment To Train 7,000 Youths Annually

Last Updated: Chief minister Fadnavis said this landmark collaboration will help Maharashtra build a global identity in port sector skill development Maharashtra has taken a major step towards creating thousands of new jobs in the maritime and logistics sectors by signing a significant memorandum of understanding (MoU) worth Rs 120 crore with foreign partners. The MoU brings together the skill development department, ports department, Atal Solutions, International BV Netherlands, and MD Rural Group to modernise six Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in Mumbai, Pune, Baramati, Sindhudurg, Nagpur, and Nashik. With participation from international credit agencies from the Netherlands, Denmark, and Poland, the project aims to provide world-class training to 5,000 to 7,000 youths every year, preparing them for emerging opportunities in the port and logistics industry. The signing took place in the chief minister's chamber at Mumbai Vidhan Bhavan, in the presence of CM Devendra Fadnavis, his deputies Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, ports minister Nitesh Rane, and skill development minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha. Chief minister Fadnavis said this landmark collaboration will help Maharashtra build a global identity in port sector skill development. 'Projects like Vadhavan Port will generate large-scale jobs. This partnership will ensure our youth are equipped with the skills needed for the maritime industry of the future," he said. Under this initiative, selected ITIs will be upgraded with modern simulation labs, international curricula, maritime transport courses, and training by global experts. The goal is to build India's first export-ready vocational training model, ensuring that Maharashtra's workforce is not only ready for local projects like JNPT and Vadhavan but can also compete globally. The €12 million (~Rs 120 crore) investment will be managed through an ECA-based financing model, with risk insurance to cover political and financial uncertainties. The project will be implemented by the Rural Enhancer Group, with support from JNPT and the Maharashtra Maritime Board. Officials believe this model will set an example for other states to follow, giving Maharashtra's youth access to high-quality skill development and steady employment in one of the world's fastest-growing sectors. Phase 1 of Kasarvadavli Flyover opened to traffic

The Phase 1 of Kasarvadavli Flyover, which is expected to ease the vehicular movement on Ghodbunder Road in Thane, was opened to traffic on Tuesday. According to Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) officials, the new flyover is anticipated to have improved connectivity among Thane, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Bhiwandi, Vasai and Virar. The flyover has been constructed with a target to ease the congestion on Ghodbunder Road, which experienced a significant amount of office traffic and heavy freight trailers most of which lead to the Mumbai-Gujarat corridor through Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) or Vashi. The flyover has been constructed with a capacity of 73,333 passenger cars with a two-lane, 7.5 metre wide flyover and an underpass designed as 2×2 lanes. The ramp length of the flyover is 721 metres. The flyover design has been planned taking in consideration the nearby metro corridor to provide smooth intermodal connectivity once the local Metro Line 4, which is Wadala to Gaimukh, is ready for operations. The completion of Phase 1 of the project is also expected to decrease travel time from Waghbil to Gaimukh, officials said. The project, inaugurated by state transport minister Pratap Sarnaik, was executed by the MMRDA. 'As a public representative, I had been following up on the demand for a flyover in the Ghodbunder, Gaimukh and Kasarvadavli areas. I am satisfied that this long-awaited moment has become a reality today. This project will make travel between Thane, Borivali, Vasai, JNPT, and Gujarat smoother, and will significantly help reduce traffic congestion on the Gaimukh to Waghbil route,' Sarnaik said. The next phase of the flyover is underway and will be finished according to the timeline of the Metro line being built along the same route.

Hydro ganja proving to be a challenge: Fadnavis

The number of cases has increased because of the government's anti-drug crackdown, he said. Replying to a calling attention motion in the legislative council, he also raised concerns over synthetic drugs and said that even terminal cancer patients are being used as drug carriers. Mumbai, Jul 3 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Thursday that 'hydro' ganja is proving to be a big challenge for the government and asserted that the Centre and state have intensified their fight against the drug business. It was found that ports in Gujarat and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), the country's largest container port located in Maharashtra's Raigad district, were used to bring in drugs concealed in cargo consignments, he said. 'Scanners that can detect concealed drugs have been installed in Gujarat and Maharashtra. Randomised checking of shipments from certain countries, where there is a possibility of drug supply, is being done,' he said. Five days ago, two Indonesian nationals were arrested with 21 kg of hydroponic ganja valued at Rs 21.55 crore in Mumbai, he said. Hydroponic ganja refers to cannabis plants grown without soil. This method gives growers precise control over the plant's environment, which can result in faster growth and higher yields. Since drug peddlers secure bail and again resort to similar activities, the state government is amending the laws to book them under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, he said. Under MCOCA, it is difficult to get bail. 'Hydro ganja is proving to be a challenge. Thailand and the US have made it legal. So, hydro ganja is being pushed into the country through courier services and other routes,' Fadnavis said. The CM highlighted the deportation of alleged drug cartel operator Naveen Chichkar from Malaysia to India in May. He said Chichkar had bought an island in Australia and acquired its citizenship. Chichkar used to send hydroponic ganja from Thailand and the US through courier. He was arrested along with a few associated with the postal and Customs departments and two policemen, who have since been sacked,' said the CM. 'The policy (of the government) is of zero tolerance (towards drugs),' Fadnavis said. He said drug peddling is not only an interstate but an international racket. States have been coordinating in the fight against drugs. He said the police are not only arresting drug peddlers but have also made probes into the forward-and-backwards linkage compulsory. 'Even last-stage cancer patients are being used (as carriers). There were three cases where they were battling cancer,' he said. 'We have intensified the fight against drugs. Courier companies have been told to ensure that drug transportation does not happen through them, or they will be named as accused in the case,' Fadnavis added. 804cr fraud: ED case against Tata co, former JNPT officials

Mumbai: ED has registered a money laundering case against former officials of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE), a project management consultant, over allegations of corruption and fraud in the awarding and execution of a contract to increase the depth of the channel for large cargo ships in 2003-14 and 2013-19 and causing a loss of Rs 804 crore to govt. The case is based on an FIR by CBI, which conducted searches last month at former JNPT officers' residences, TCE and the offices of accused private firms in Mumbai and Chennai. The CBI FIR named then JNPT chief manager Sunil Kumar Madabhavi, TCE and its project director Devdutt Bose, BoskalisSmit India and Jan De Nul Dredging India, along with unidentified public and private persons. It alleged "shadow bidding arrangements to support the cartel made by BoskalisSmit India LLP and Jan De Nul Dredging India Pvt Ltd were permitted by Madabhavi in connivance with Bose and other unidentified individuals". —Vijay V Singh You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Doctor's Day 2025 , messages and quotes!

Though the protesters who had initially raised objections did not attend the meeting, several representatives from the affected coastal villages participated in the discussion, it said. The villagers' demands include higher compensation for land to be acquired for the Vadhvan greenfield highway, employment opportunities for locals in the port project, and compensation and rehabilitation measures for fishermen who may lose their livelihood. Live Events Deputy Collector Mahesh Sagar said during the meeting that JNPT ( Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust ) has agreed in principle to prioritise the local residents for employment opportunities in the project, according to the release. The district administration also clarified that a comprehensive compensation policy for fishermen is under preparation, the release said. Officials also emphasised that the government remains sensitive to public sentiment and is committed to an inclusive development process, it added. The development of a Rs 76,200 crore all-weather greenfield deep draft major Port at Vadhvan was approved by the Union Cabinet in 2024. The project will be constructed by Vadhvan Port Project Limited, a special purpose vehicle (SPV) formed by Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), with a shareholding of 74 per cent and 26 per cent, respectively.
