City's Sheriff responds to assassination claims by NCC leader Fadiel Adams
Fadiel Adams, leader of the National Coloured Congress, claims a conspiracy involving DA's JP Smith. Image: File Hours after National Coloured Congress (NCC) leader Fadiel Adams took to social media and hosted a press conference on claims that there was a plot allegedly conspired by mayco member for Safety and Security JP Smith to assassinate him, the City's Sheriff said Smith has already approached his lawyer to open a civil and criminal case against Adams. 'He has approached his lawyer to initiate a civil and criminal case against Fadiel,' said the City on Monday via Smith. The Cape Argus approached the City for comment on the allegations made in the press conference. Adams went live on his Facebook page on Sunday where he claimed the DA ward councillor in Manenberg, Deidree de Vos, had allegedly warned him that there was a conspiracy to kill him. In a press statement released on Friday, Adams said the plot was reported to police weeks ago and he handed all evidence to them. Via his live post, he further claimed he had a recording of De Vos disclosing information to him and on Monday during the press conference held at Parliament, he played it for the media present. Adams also said he placed his family at a safehouse and that he was being targeted because he was rooting out corruption such as tender fraud and links to gangs. Video Player is loading. 'The person on the other end of the line was a senior member of the Democratic Alliance and I am not happy about what I am about to do, but I do value my family more than my friends. 'The caller claimed that one JP Smith, mayco for Safety and Security, had deployed a new councillor in Manenberg, Deidree de Vos, she had been sent to approach a man named Faiek Moses. Faiek Moses was once upon a time a notorious member of the Hard Livings gang and as far as I know, he has turned his life around and he is a working man. 'He has small contracts and sub contracts in the Manenberg area and Deidree de Vos was told to tell him that JP Smith was about to terminate his membership as a DA member and his contract opportunities.' He said there was also a WhatsApp message from mayco member for Human Settlements, Carl Pophaim. 'They want Faiek to take Fadiel out,' the message said, as Adams read it out. 'They want Faiek to act like a gangster because I am threatening his income,' said Adams. Police have since said they are unable to comment on the matter. De Vos has also remained silent with a media response. Pophaim did not respond to Cape Argus as yet. Smith said it was a plot to slander him. 'It has come to my attention that more misinformation is once again being spread by the NCC and its relevance-starved leader, Fadiel Adams, in an utterly ridiculous attempt to tarnish my reputation, that of the Democratic Alliance, and the City of Cape Town. .'Their latest smear campaign is laughable at best. I strongly deny the allegations and condemn the dissemination of fake news. "I have engaged my lawyers and I will ensure appropriate legal action is taken against this continued slander. Disruptive snow alert for parts of Eastern Cape as cold front marches on
The South African Weather Service (Saws) issued several warnings for disruptive rainfall, snow and waves for two provinces as humanitarian relief organisations on Thursday helped residents battered by a strong cold front in the Western Cape. At least 600 people were being assisted in Vygieskraal and Belgravia by organisations including the Mustadafin Foundation and Islamic Relief in Cape Town, said disaster risk management spokesperson Sonica Lategan. Heavy rain led to trees falling, road closures and heavy traffic congestion in the city on Wednesday. Safety and security MMC JP Smith said 15 vehicle accidents and three pedestrian accidents were attended to during the deluge. A tanker carrying nitric acid overturned on Wednesday night at Rooshoek in Wellington. 'The tanker remained intact and no nitric acid was spilt. All diesel has been contained. No injuries were reported,' said the Cape Winelands district municipality. 'Rain is hampering recovery efforts and the road will remain closed for the next few hours.' Smith urged motorists to increase following distances, reduce speed and be patient in inclement weather expected to persist over the province and bring snowfall to parts of the Eastern Cape on Thursday. The Cape of Good Hope SPCA said part of the roof at the organisation's Wildlife Centre collapsed in the midst of the storm on Wednesday. 'Cape Town took a beating. Strong wind, icy temperatures and driving rain have wrecked havoc in the city — and we haven't been spared. Part of the roof in our Wildlife Centre collapsed in the midst of the storm,' it said. 'We're grateful that no animals or staff were harmed, but the damage is significant and comes at the worst possible time, when every cent we have is needed for animal rescues.' Saws issued a yellow level-2 warning for disruptive rainfall leading to localised flooding of susceptible formal and informal settlements or roads and low-lying areas over the Cederberg, City of Cape Town, Cape Winelands districts of in the Western Cape and the western parts of the Overberg district during the morning. Warnings were issued for: damaging waves along the coast between Plettenberg Bay and East London; damaging wind between Port Edward and Cape Vidal; and damaging wind between Cape Agulhas and East London. As the cold front moves across the country, Saws also issued a warning for the flood-ravaged Eastern Cape for 'disruptive snow resulting in traffic disruption due to icy roads and loss of vulnerable livestock and crops in Senqu and Elundini local municipalities on Thursday. 📷Protect yourself and loved one during the winter weather. Boks vs Barbarians: what you need to know
Rain or no rain, rugby fever is set to grip Cape Town this Saturday, 28 June, when the Springboks take on the Barbarians at the DHL Stadium in the Qatar Airways Cup. It's the first time the famous British-based invitational side will tour South Africa, and the first of two home games for the Boks in the Mother City this year. It also kicks off the Springboks' five-month international season, which will also include the Castle Lager Incoming Series, the Castle Lager Rugby Championship and the end-of-year tour of Europe. All of which means big crowds, plenty of traffic and the chance to be clever about how you get to the stadium for the game (or avoid the crush if you're not). With a huge crowd expected to flood towards Green Point, the City of Cape Town has rolled out a match-day game plan to manage traffic, boost public transport and keep the traffic moving smoothly. Well, sort of. "We are anticipating more than 40,000 spectators for this game, which will affect traffic on match day. To reduce congestion and help fans get to the stadium on time, we've worked closely with the event organizer to provide alternatives to single-occupancy vehicles," said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith. "We strongly encourage all spectators to make use of the park-and-ride system, which is a convenient and reliable way to avoid delays and ensure a smooth journey to the venue. The shuttle, with its dedicated lane to the stadium, will ensure that you beat the traffic and get to the stadium smoothly." Or, put another way? Don't be that guy who drives by themselves in a car and then looks for parking close to the stadium. Here's how to avoid the gridlock when heading to DHL Cape Town Stadium: Free MyCiTi shuttles Ticket holders can catch free rides from Century City, CTICC, Thibault Square, and Civic Center from 12:00. Return shuttles will run until 21:30. Park & Ride options: Civic Centre: Free parking from 11.30am (entry via Hertzog Blvd and Civic Rd). Century City (Steelbridge E-Parking): Limited free bays; access via Century Blvd. Paid mall parking also available. CBD on-street parking: Free after 1pm. Nearby paid lots: Jack Craig Street and Harbor Arch. E-hailing zone: A dedicated pick-up/drop-off area is at P13 on Green Point Main Rd, between York and Wigtown Roads. Road closures: Expect full or partial closures from 6am to 10.30pm along: Fritz Sonnenberg Rd Stephan Way Vlei Rd Fort Wynyard St Granger Bay Blvd The City has not confirmed if the Fan Walk along Somerset Road will be in place, so keep your eyes open if you're walking to the stadium. Gates open at 12pm for a 5.10pm kick-off. Plan ahead, catch a shuttle and make the most of a memorable day for Cape Town rugby.

More than 900 'problem buildings' in Cape Town
There are 922 problem buildings listed in Cape Town with 322 of those under active investigation by the city's law enforcement problem building unit. 'Problem buildings are categorised into various groups based on their status within the investigation process. Of the 922 properties listed, 35% (322 properties) are active cases,' according to the city. Other categories included: new cases (11 properties), recommended closed (72 properties), and closed cases (517 properties). 'The city's problem building unit has made great progress by working closely with other city departments ... The first step in addressing a problem building is reporting it and so we appeal to the public to report any potential risks in their communities. We have often seen that opportunistic criminals would use a derelict building to hide or to use such a building as a base of operations,' said safety and security MMC JP Smith. What constitutes a problem building is outlined in the 2020 Problem Property By-law which is divided into two categories: • Problem buildings: properties with legal, safety, or health-related noncompliance. • Buildings with problems: Properties with aesthetic or minor maintenance issues, such as unpainted surfaces, broken windows or overgrown grass. The registered owners of problem buildings are formally notified and given an opportunity to comply with the bylaw. TimesLIVE
