Who won NASCAR Xfinity Indianapolis race? Winner is Connor Zilisch, plus full results
Connor Zilisch passed Taylor Gray for the lead with two laps to go to win the Pennzoil 250 NASCAR Xfinity Series race on July 26 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Zilisch earned his third consecutive win and the 100th victory all-time for JR Motorsports. Zilisch and Gray were the beneficiaries of a messy restart between Justin Allgaier, Kyle Larson and Brandon Jones at the front of the field with less than 15 laps to go. Allgaier and Larson went side-by-side through the first two turns, with Larson sliding up into Allgaier and into the wall, with Brandon Jones suffering damage after inadvertent contact with Allgaier. Zilisch and Gray settled into first and second, with Gray stalking Zilisch's tire tracks within a few car lengths. A few laps later, Austin Hill got out of shape while battling Aric Almirola for position inside the top five and made contact with Almirola, sending both cars into the wall. Hill was penalized five laps for reckless driving. After a short red flag, Gray took the lead on the final restart before Zilisch's pass a couple laps later with drafting help by Sam Mayer. Home-country hero Daniel Suarez wins Mexico City Xfinity race
In all his high hopes and hard work over the last year to promote NASCAR's return to his home country of Mexico, even Daniel Suarez could not have imagined the amazing story of his dramatic win in Saturday's The Chilango 150 -- coming from last place on the grid in a backup car and charging to Victory Lane. After victory spinouts, the 33-year old from Monterrey, Mexico, climbed out of his No. 9 JR Motorsports Chevrolet, stood on the car's roof, pounded his chest and pointed upward to the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez grandstands -- shouting to the thrilled crowd in his native Spanish and thanking his loyal fans for their support. "It's everything I was looking for, just a special day," said an emotional Suarez, the 2016 NASCAR Xfinity Series champion, who led a race-best 19 of the race's 65 laps and beat Taylor Gray to the checkered flag by .598 seconds in a backup car the team rebuilt after he crashed in the morning qualifying session. "It's a very special day to be here in front of my people, all these people that have supported me for many, many years and known me since my NASCAR Mexico days. Now I'm fighting with the big boys," said Suarez, who was forced to use the "international provisional" starting position after his incident in qualifying. Even after diligently working his way through the 37-car field, Suarez had to earn this win by every definition. The NASCAR Cup Series full-timer went door to door with Gray on a restart with three laps remaining, ultimately pulling away -- only to have to fend off a fast-approaching Gray again on the final stretch of the last lap. Daniel Suarez celebrates after winning the NASCAR Xfinity Series The Chilango 150. AFP Suarez first took the lead Saturday in similarly dramatic fashion, prevailing on a three-wide restart with 19 laps remaining. He emerged out front after going head-to-head with the race's early leaders, rookie Connor Zilisch and fellow NASCAR Cup Series regular Ty Gibbs. The polesitter Zilisch, who led 17 laps, wheel-hopped taking the opening corner of a crowded restart, spun and then hit his JR Motorsports teammate Carson Kvapil as the pileup behind began. Gibbs, who led 18 laps, moved forward from the initial contact then made contact with Kvapil's Chevy on the next turn. The ensuing pileup affected 13 cars to varying degrees. Suarez drove through the melee, drawing a massive cheer from the crowd. The Mexican fans stood on their feet, arms raised, Mexican flags in the air. Richard Childress Racing's Austin Hill finished third, Kaulig Racing's Christian Eckes was fourth and Zilisch recovered to finish fifth in another of the day's more remarkable efforts. After that incident with 17 laps remaining, Zilisch fell back to 28th place with damage to the right side of his Chevy, only to move through the field at a remarkable pace -- up 14 positions in the three laps after the restart. He was in 10th place with 10 laps to go, finishing among the top five. A general view of the press at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, Mexico. AFP "I'm proud of my team for their effort," said Zilisch, who leaned against his car alone on pit road, obviously disappointed with the outcome after such a strong afternoon. "Obviously the finish isn't what we wanted. We probably had a better car than fifth place, but we got caught up in an incident on that last restart. Just proud to be able to come here and get a decent finish. William Sawalich, Austin Green, Jeb Burton and his cousin, Harrison Burton, and Sammy Smith rounded out the top 10. There were seven lead changes among six drivers, with Kvapil winning the first stage and Smith winning stage two. NASCAR Xfinity Series championship leader Justin Allgaier had to take his No. 7 JR Motorsports Chevrolet behind the wall for repairs before the end of the first stage, ultimately settling for a 34th-place finish, 15 laps down to the winner. Fortunately for the reigning series champion, he held a 92-point advantage over Hill atop the points standings heading into Mexico City. He now leads by 54 points. The series moves to Pocono (Pa.) Raceway for next Saturday's Explore the Pocono Mountains 250 (3:30 p.m. ET, The CW, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). Associated Press

Super sub Kyle Larson battles to 2OT win at Texas
FORT WORTH, Texas -- Crew chief Mardy Lindley called his shot. "We've got to stop to win," Lindley radioed to driver Kyle Larson, subbing for injured Connor Zilisch in the No. 88 JR Motorsports Chevrolet. Lindley was right. Larson made a late pit stop and proceeded to win Saturday's Andy's Frozen Custard 300 at Texas Motor Speedway in two overtimes. The victory was Larson's second of the season, his second at Texas and the 17th of his career, with Larson charging from the seventh position on a Lap 194 restart -- behind six cars that stayed out on older tires -- to win in two extra periods. On Lap 188, Larson was cruising to a probable win with a lead of more than six seconds when Corey Day -- in the No. 17 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet Larson drove to a dominating win at Bristol in mid-April -- hit the tire barrier on the inside of Turn 3 to cause the ninth of 11 cautions. That's when Lindley made the call to bring Larson to pit road, and ultimately it paid off. After moving from third to second on the first overtime restart, Larson took the lead from defending race winner Sam Mayer in the second overtime and pulled away to win by 1.265 seconds over Taylor Gray, who "Thanks to JRM for letting me come run this thing here today. Obviously, I wish Connor was in the car, but it means a lot that they thought of me to call up to run this thing." As Larson worked his way through the field twice -- once from the 20th starting position and again after an uncontrolled tire penalty sent him to the rear after the first stage break -- Allgaier led a race-high 99 laps and kept Larson at bay until a cycle of green-flag pit stops in the final stage scrambled the running order. It was during that cycle that Allgaier's race came to an untimely end. Running 12th after pitting on Lap 153, Allgaier closed fast on the No. 5 Chevrolet of Kris Wright near the exit from Turn 4. Wright failed to hold the bottom lane and drifted up the track into Allgaier's line. Allgaier made a move toward the inside but couldn't avoid Wright's car. The No. 7 JR Motorsports Chevrolet slammed into the outside wall in the tri-oval, slid down onto the infield grass and ended the race on a wrecker. Allgaier, who had lost position to Larson during the pit sequence, was gracious in his assessment of the wreck that ended his day. "The hard part is, ultimately it falls on my shoulders," Allgaier said. "We'd about gotten crashed a couple laps before the green-flag stop there, and I think they had some damage and he (Wright) was having a bit of a tough time with his race car, and I'm trying to catch back to the 88 and trying to push and ultimately put myself in a bad position ... "Kyle and I had a great battle, and I was having a lot of fun with it. Obviously, the guy's ultra-fast in anything that he drives ... I think probably the most disappointing part about today is that it's my mom's birthday. I would love to get a trophy and celebrate her birthday with that, but instead I'm standing here talking to you guys." Allgaier's exit opened the door for Mayer, Gray, Austin Hill and Nick Sanchez. Driving the No. 48 Big Machine Racing Chevrolet, Sanchez ran consistently in the top five until the second overtime, when he hit the wall and dropped to 20th at the finish. Riley Herbst finished third after restarting sixth in the final overtime, with Hill coming home fourth, Mayer fifth and Harrison Burton sixth.
