(Photo: Filoil EcoOil Sports/FB) Sean Salvador sizzled from downtown to power Jose Rizal University to a 75-74 come-from-behind overtime victory over San Beda University in the 18th Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup on Wednesday. The young guard made a statement in his tournament debut for the Heavy Bombers, exploding for seven three-pointers en route to 25 points, along with three rebounds, four assists, and two steals. With the former Mapua Red Robin catching fire from beyond the arc, JRU rolled to its second straight win, improving to 3-5, while San Beda absorbed its third loss in four games. The 19-year-old Salvador came to life late in the third quarter, igniting JRU's rally from a 16-point deficit after San Beda big man Bismarck Lina extended the Red Lions to a 56-40 lead. Salvador sparked the fuse with back-to-back triples while Jay Garupil joined the long-range party with one of his own as the Heavy Bombers trimmed the gap to 56-49 entering the final frame. Salvador then fired another pair of triple to tie things up at 66-all and drag the Red Lions to overtime. Jayson Castillo opened the extra period with two free throws before Salvador gave JRU a 71-66 advantage off another basket from beyond the arc. Two more JRU backcourt weapons in Yuri Duque and Shawn Argente delivered the finishing blow, calmly sinking two free throws each to seal the win despite a last-gasp triple from Yukien Andrada with just 0.2 seconds left. Garupil, a former Letran Knight, was steady with his 14-point outing while Argente and Duque chipped in 12 and 11 markers each in the wild comeback victory. Jomel Puno paced San Beda with 23 points, eight rebounds, one assist, and one steal while Andrada flirted with a double-double effort of 10 markers and nine boards. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Filoil: JRU rides Harry Herrera's double-double outing vs. LPU to end five-game slide

Harry Herrera delivered his finest performance yet in a Jose Rizal University jersey, spearheading the Heavy Bombers' 71-64 victory over Lyceum of the Philippines University in the 18th Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup on Monday. The former San Sebastian Staglet exploded for 21 points and 11 rebounds, powering JRU to snap a five-game losing skid and improve to 2-5. The Pirates, meanwhile, slid further down the standings with a 1-4 record. However, the win didn't come easy for the Heavy Bombers. Veteran guard Shawn Argente escaped two defenders for a layup that sent JRU to its biggest lead at 69-54 with 2:48 left in the payoff period. But the Pirates made it a dogfight after mounting a desperate comeback attempt that saw them pulling within five points, thanks to a 10-0 blast led by John Barba. The graduating Barba, scoreless almost the entire game, converted all of his five points in that stretch for a 69-64 deficit in the last five seconds. Argente saved the day for JRU, sinking a pair of free throws to seal it for the embattled Heavy Bombers. Argente finished with 19 points and two assists off the bench while Jay Garupil chipped in nine markers, seven dimes, three rebounds, and two steals. Joshua Moralejo paced the Pirates with 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists while Simon Peñafiel churned out nine markers. —Bea Micaller/JMB, GMA Integrated News

JRU launches new sustainability campaign in commitment to UN SDGs

Jose Rizal University (JRU) launched its Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) initiative, aligning its commitment to sustainability in education, operations, and community collaborations with the United Nations' 17 Global Goals and the 2030 Agenda. In a press release, the university said that the new campaign was launched with an event themed 'Unveiling the Eco Hero in Us' held on Thursday at the JRU Centennial Building Auditorium. Dr. Kathleen G. Apilado, Dean of the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management and Chair of the JRU SDG Committee, highlighted the university's deep commitment. 'This is not just a launch — this is a legacy. Sustainability is part of our identity. It is Taos-Pusong Rizal in action,' she said, reflecting how JRU's core values align with the SDGs and are already evidenced by over 50 SDG-integrated course activities and green campus initiatives. The event also introduced JRU's SDG Committee, headed by Dr. Apilado, with Engr. Joseph S. Dela Cruz and Ms. Hiromi M. Lascano as co-chairs. Among the committee's responsibilities are overseeing various thematic areas of implementation, facilitating collaboration with external stakeholders, and more. Inspiration was also drawn from an audiovisual presentation featuring sustainability case studies from organizations, including GMA Network and others, noting that although they are not official partners, their stories provided inspiration for JRU's advocacy. The event concluded with the official launch of the Green Campus Challenge, a year-long campaign promoting eco-friendly habits and environmental advocacy. —Carby Rose Basina/CDC, GMA Integrated News
