Orlando Pirates star draws interest from Algerian club
Orlando Pirates playmaker Karim Kimvuidi has attracted attention from Algerian giants JS Kabylie. The DR Congo international has spent the past two seasons with the Buccaneers, joining the Soweto club from Maritzburg United, now known as Durban City FC, after their relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Kimvuidi signed for Pirates at the start of the 2023/2024 season, aiming to establish himself in one of South Africa's top clubs. In his first season in black and white, Kimvuidi made eight starts in 22 matches across all competitions, managing to score two goals. However, his second campaign brought fewer opportunities. Despite featuring in 15 matches, the midfielder only started twice and found the net once. Sources indicate that JS Kabylie have shown interest in the 22-year-old but remain reluctant to pay a significant transfer fee. It's currently unclear whether they will approach Orlando Pirates with a formal offer. As preparations ramp up for the upcoming season, Orlando Pirates have released several senior players while welcoming new arrivals to Mayfair. The club opted not to renew the contract of long-serving skipper Innocent Maela. According to a source, 'He's been offered a non-playing role within the club.' Maela recently took part in welcoming the latest signings, joining Buccaneers legends such as Lucky Lekgwathi, Happy Jele, Tebogo Moloi, Edward Motale, and Brighton Mhlongo in the club's induction process. Midfielder Miguel Timm, who spent three seasons at the club, also bid farewell to Pirates. Reports link him with a possible move to Sekhukhune United. In a double blow, the Buccaneers also parted ways with Paseka Mako and Thabo Monyane, both of whom have already been unveiled by Kaizer Chiefs as new signings. MC Alger seal back-to-back Algeria titles despite final-day stalemate
Published: Sunday, 22 June 2025 MC Alger clinched a ninth Algerian Ligue 1 crown – and a second in succession – after a goalless draw with already-relegated Nejm Mogra on the final day of the 2024-25 season at the 5 July Stadium in Algiers on Saturday night. The point was enough to lift Khaled Ben Yahia's side to 58 points, two clear of bitter rivals JS Kabylie, who leapfrogged CR Belouizdad into second thanks to their own victory elsewhere. It means MC Alger stand alone as the country's third-most decorated league club, trailing only Kabylie (14 titles) and Belouizdad (10). Knowing a draw would guarantee the championship, the capital club controlled possession from the outset yet found Nejm Mogra's deep-lying defence obstinate. Early openings for Guinean forward Mohamed Salio Bangura were repelled, and a series of set-pieces from captain Sofiane Bendebka sailed narrowly wide. Nejm, condemned to the amateur ranks after finishing 15th on 31 points, rarely ventured forward but almost stunned the home crowd when forward Brahim Aït Lahcen flashed a half-volley past the post midway through the first half. Ben Yahia introduced Burkinabe midfielder Mohamed Zograna for Larbi Thabti at the break, later sending on Abdellah Boucharit and striker Hamza Bayezid in search of a breakthrough. The reshuffle, however, produced more territory than clear chances; Bangura's looping header in the 78th minute was the closest MC came, goalkeeper Samir Rahmani clawing the effort away. The final whistle sparked celebrations among more than 45,000 'Chnaoua', who unfurled banners commemorating the club's 1976 African Cup of Champions Clubs triumph – still their solitary continental success. After falling to Orlando Pirates in last season's TotalEnergies CAF Champions League quarter-finals, MC Alger have vowed to mount a deeper run next term. Chairman Mohamed Hakim Medane confirmed the board will 'strengthen two key positions' during the close season to help Ben Yahia's squad cope with domestic and African commitments. For Nejm Mogra, relegation ends a brief two-year stay in the top flight, while third-placed Belouizdad qualify for CAF inter-club competition via the league for a sixth straight season. Key numbers MC Alger – 58 pts JS Kabylie – 56 pts CR Belouizdad – 55 pts Titles in Algerian Ligue 1: JS Kabylie – 14 CR Belouizdad – 10 MC Alger – 9 MC Alger will return to action in late August when they begin their Champions League campaign in the second qualifying round.

Former Algerian International Djamel Menad Dies Aged 64
Former Algeria forward Djamel Menad has died aged 64 following a short illness, his ex-club JS Kabylie announced on Saturday. "The wider Algerian football family and JS Kabylie are in mourning following the announcement of the death of Djamel Menad, a former player and true legend of football in the country," JS Kabylie wrote on social media. "In recent weeks, the health of the former center-forward of the Algerian national team had deteriorated rapidly as a result of a devastating illness that struck him around two months ago," indicated news website TSA. Menad died in a clinic in Algiers where he had been hospitalized on March 14, after returning from Brussels where he had been receiving treatment for a month, reported Algerian football media DZfoot. Born on July 22, 1960 in the town of El Bayadh, Menad represented his country 79 times, scoring 25 goals, over a 15-year international career. Menad's efforts in helping Algeria reach the 1986 World Cup in Mexico resulted in him being named Algerian sportsman of the year in 1985. He was notably top scorer at the 1990 Africa Cup of Nations, with four goals in five appearances as Algeria claimed the trophy on home soil. Over his club career, Menad played for Algerian sides JS Kabylie, CR Belouizdad and USM Alger. He also played in Europe for French club Nimes, as well as Portuguese sides Famalicao and Belenenses. Menad moved into coaching after his playing career and was most recently sporting director at JS Kabylie.
