‘Jurassic World Rebirth' review: Another embarrassing dino retread

movie review JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH Running time: 134 minutes. Rated PG-13 (intense sequences of violence/action, bloody images, some suggestive references and language). In theaters July 2. Sixty-five million years. That is how long the 'Jurassic' film series has been schlepping along. I am quite certain of this. The audience is positively fossilized by the end of the seventh movie: 'Jurassic World Regurgitation.' Sorry. 'Rebirth.' It's 'Rebirth.' What a misleading title. The once-great franchise is hardly reborn from the amber this time. It's slammed by an asteroid yet again. The sheer inanity of 'Retread''s exposition is remarkable. We're informed that, during the past five years, humanity has grown weary of dinosaurs. Bored, tired, over it. Ten-ton ferocious lizards are spoken of like fidget spinners or Palm Pilots. And, in this half-decade, the previously extinct beasts came to the stark realization that North America does not have the ideal climate for them. Even though just one horrible movie ago they were excitedly galloping through the Great Plains. So, like Canadians in winter, they've mostly headed down to the equator. 4 'Rebirth' is little more than an embarrassing retread of old ideas. AP Per the usual schtick, some unlikable morons must jet from New York City to some perilous tropical island, even though they obviously shouldn't. The dumb-dumbs du jour are Scarlett Johansson's Zora, some sort of calculating mercenary, and Jonathan Bailey, as an exceedingly rare male model paleontologist named Henry. A pyrite Goldblum. These folks, some of the blandest characters in the entire 'Jurassic' series, will be paid $10 million to secure blood samples from the most massive air, water and land dinosaurs. Big Pharma needs the vials to cure heart disease. Extraordinary. 4 Zora (Scarlett Johansson) and Henry (Jonathan Bailey) are some of the weakest characters in the entire 'Jurassic' franchise. AP To kick off their journey on a chipper note, Zora and team leader Duncan (Mahershala Ali) somberly reminisce about their dead friends and family members. The depressing scene does not succeed in making us like them. In fact, it made me miss Téa Leoni from 'Jurassic Park 3.' They're eventually joined by Reuben (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), a dolt who's taken his two daughters and one's stoner boyfriend, Xavier (David Iacono), on a sailing trip through waters known to be full of giant killer reptiles. Father of the year. Too much of 'Revile,' directed by Gareth Edwards of 'Rogue One,' splish-splashes in H2O. When our explorers are boating on the ocean for an interminable chunk, they are attacked by a finned creature — the Snoozeosaurus, an overconfident whale. Later, when the T. Rex chases Dad, the girls and the pothead up a chlorinated-looking river, they could be at a theme park in the Adirondacks. 4 Rupert Friend, Mahershala Ali and Bechir Sylvain are also along for the ride. AP For some cheap 'aww's, the little girl, Isabella (Audrina Miranda), picks up a cute pet dino and names her Dolores. All the while, the adventurers gather their specimens. Side characters die. Nobody seems to mind. Many of the dinos introduced are laboratory hybrids that, while designed to be scary, come off very fake. They don't realistically stomp around with 15,000 pounds of weight. Their scaly skin lacks texture. All of the special effects appear worse than they did 30 years ago. And the gobbledygook dialogue from David Koepp, the screenwriter of the fantastic original, is terrible even by the low standards of what's come recently before it. Gazing out at the wilderness, dazed and confused Xavier says, 'When an old person buys a bed, do they think: 'This is my deathbed'? Because that's what I'm thinking right now.' It's absolutely what I was thinking. 4 The series should've ended with the previous film — 'Dominion.' AP Rupert Friend plays a pharma rep who tags along. On set, Edwards likely yelled, 'Rupert, you're evil. Action!' The best part of the movie is John Williams' rousing old themes that bring us back to happier, more entertaining times. He hasn't composed the new score. That's Alexandre Desplat, whose generic and limp contributions could be from the public domain. Universal and Amblin should have ended this franchise after 2022's appalling 'Dominion,' in which the well was so dry that the main conflict was prehistoric locusts gobbling up crops. The premise has become an overgrown weed, and it's time to put it — and us — out of our misery. Early on in 'Revolting,' Henry says, 'Nobody cares about these animals anymore. They deserve better.' Yes. And they deserve better movies.

REVIEW: Jurassic World Rebirth Is Filled With Old School Movie Magic

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors Summer 2025 has its first hit courtesy of Gareth Edwards, who has filled his Jurassic World: Rebirth with dazzling movie magic that sinks into your heart and reminds you of why we go to the movies. The film opens on a scene 17 years before the main narrative of Jurassic World: Rebirth, on an island home to a lab where experiments on massive prehistoric creatures occur. When one goes awry, a chilling opening sequence ensues, which sets us on the path to Jurassic World: Rebirth, where cities are riddled with ginormous creatures and travel to equatorial regions is banned. Among the chaos is Rupert Friend, playing Martin Krebs, who's assembling a group to take to the scene of the devastation in hopes of extracting DNA from the creatures roaming the island to fund his next medical breakthrough. He recruits Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey) and Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson), who then brings Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali) onto the expedition. L to R: Jonathan Bailey as paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis and Scarlett Johansson as skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett in JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH, directed by Gareth Edwards. Universal Studios Bailey is brilliant as the rule-following Dr. Henry Loomis, who is so precise and by the book that it translates to comedy. Despite his dutiful demeanour, Bailey infuses Loomis with sincerity and humor, making chewing a mint one of the most comedic things you've seen on screen this year. The fire to his calm is Johansson, who charges alongside him as the bold and gutsy Zora Bennett. Harboring a tragedy from her past, Johansson smooths Zora's rough edges with a compulsion to keep everyone protected, even at the expense of her own safety. But the star of the show is Mahershala Ali, who is magnetic in every scene. Like Zora, Duncan has made his mistakes, and he's not looking to repeat history. More cautious than Zora, Ali carries Duncan's past earnestly, and Ali and Johansson have fantastic on-screen chemistry as partners in crime. You feel every nuance of their past without them ever needing to discuss it. Orchestrating them all is director Gareth Edwards, who works overtime to make every facet of this film feed into his vision for this entry to the Jurassic universe. One of the unsung highlights of Jurassic World: Rebirth will be the lighting crew, who made every shot – day or night – glisten. It's a detail that'll get swept under the rug due to how effortless it feels, but it cannot be overstated how stunning the work they did is. It made Edwards' world vibrant and dynamic, allowing the small details from each actor to shine through. There's an awe-inspiring moment in the final act where an outline shines through smoke. It's a blink-and-you-miss-it detail, but it deserves its flowers. Universal Studios READ: Jurassic World Rebirth – Everything We Know, Trailer, and Release Date Be assured, Edwards doesn't make you wait until Act Three for thrills. He infuses them from minute one, with every battle having you more on the edge of your seat than the last. People go to see the Jurassic films for the creatures, and Edwards makes sure you get your money's worth. They're not lingering in the background. They are in-your-face, ready to attack, and could arrive at any moment. Though, as much as Edwards highlights the dangers of these creatures, he also shows the beauty and romanticism. In one tearjerking scene, the group stumble upon a gorgeous landscape where ginormous dinosaurs roam freely. They are peaceful, intertwining with one another, showing another side of their overwhelming stature. It's particularly romantic for Jonathan Bailey as Dr. Henry Loomis, and we feel every inch of his awe as he takes in this unbelievable sight. As per tradition with Jurassic projects, Steven Spielberg was at the helm as executive producer. Though how much involvement he has is unclear, Edwards makes sure you feel his warm movie magic legacy. Jurassic World: Rebirth feels like an old adventure movie and a homage to those that came before. While it's impossible to emulate the three-time Oscar winner, Edwards honors what Spielberg laid the foundation for all those years ago. It's fantastical, romantic, awe-inspiring, but most of all... fun. Get out to the movies and enjoy it. It's not often we get big-budget productions imbued with this much care, attention to detail, and respect for their audience, so grab the opportunity while it's here. When Does Jurassic World: Rebirth Release? Jurassic World: Rebirth hits theaters on July 2, 2025.

This summer, three years after the Jurassic World trilogy concluded with each film surpassing $1 billion at the global box office, the enduring Jurassic series evolves in an ingenious new direction with Jurassic World Rebirth. Anchored by iconic action superstar Scarlett Johansson, Emmy and SAG nominee Jonathan Bailey and two-time Oscar® winner Mahershala Ali, this action-packed new chapter sees an extraction team race to the most dangerous place on Earth, an island research facility for the original Jurassic Park, inhabited by the worst of the worst that were left behind. Also starring acclaimed international stars Rupert Friend and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, the film is directed by dynamic visualist Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) from a script by original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp. Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet's ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures across land, sea and air within that tropical biosphere hold, in their DNA, the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind. Academy Award® nominee Johansson plays skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett, contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure the genetic material. When Zora's operation intersects with a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized by marauding aquatic dinos, they all find themselves stranded on a forbidden island that had once housed an undisclosed research facility for Jurassic Park. There, in a terrain populated by dinosaurs of vastly different species, they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery that has been hidden from the world for decades. Ali is Duncan Kincaid, Zora's most trusted team member; Critics Choice and Olivier Award winner Jonathan Bailey (Wicked, Bridgerton) plays paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis; Emmy nominee Rupert Friend (Homeland, Obi-Wan Kenobi) appears as Big Pharma representative Martin Krebs and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer, Murder on the Orient Express) plays Reuben Delgado, the father of the shipwrecked civilian family. The cast includes Luna Blaise (Manifest), David Iacono (The Summer I Turned Pretty) and Audrina Miranda (Lopez vs. Lopez) as Reuben's family. The film also features, as members of Zora and Krebs' crews, Philippine Velge (Station Eleven), Bechir Sylvain (BMF) and Ed Skrein (Deadpool). An Amblin Entertainment production, Jurassic World Rebirth is directed by BAFTA winner Edwards from a script by Koepp (War of the Worlds), based on characters created by Michael Crichton. The film is produced by Oscar® nominee Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley, both longtime Jurassic franchise producers and of last summer's blockbuster, Twisters. The film is executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Denis L. Stewart and Jim Spencer. # # # All rights reserved 2025. All brands and trade names are the property of their respective owners.
