Dollar mixed on tariff uncertainty
NEW YORK: The dollar was mixed on Friday but on track for a monthly gain against the Japanese yen as investors factored in the likelihood of trade tariffs remaining in some form, even as US President Donald Trump faces a court battle over his authority to impose them. A federal appeals court temporarily reinstated the most sweeping of Trump's tariffs on Thursday, a day after a US trade court ruled that Trump had exceeded his authority in imposing the duties and ordered an immediate block on them. While the exact level of tariffs that will remain on trading partners is unknown, traders are expecting the levies to persist in some form. 'We're going to have some tariffing. Maybe not as exciting as was announced on April the 2nd, but we're still going to get it,' said Steve Englander, head of global G10 FX research and North America macro strategy at Standard Chartered Bank's NY Branch. 'The one thing that the court ruling may have done is limited the amount of shocks that Trump can unleash with a headline or with a comment at a press conference,' Englander said. White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said on Thursday that the Trump administration will seek to enact tariffs through other means if it ultimately loses the court fights over its trade policy. Investors are concerned that tariffs will slow growth and reignite inflation, though deals to drop tariff increases on China and the European Union as they negotiate trading terms has reduced pessimism over the US economic outlook. The dollar briefly bounced on Friday after Trump said that China had violated an agreement on tariffs with the United States. It comes a day after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that trade talks between the US and China were 'a bit stalled.' Tariffs are also seen as a key source of revenue as Congress works on a bill to reduce some income taxes. Meanwhile the dollar showed little reaction to data on Friday showed that US consumer spending increased marginally in April as a rush to beat higher prices from import duties slowed, while inflation eased during the month. A separate report showed that the US trade deficit in goods narrowed sharply in April as the boost from the front-running of imports ahead of tariffs faded. 'Nothing in the data was such a clear surprise relative to expectations that would generate a definitive market move,' said Englander. May's jobs report due for release next Friday will next be closely watched for any indications that the labor market is weakening, after data on Thursday showed a bigger than expected jump in jobless claims in the latest week. The euro was last down 0.47% at $1.1317. It is on pace for a 0.05% monthly loss, the first red month since December. German inflation eased further in May, bringing it closer to the European Central Bank's 2% target and bolstering the case for an interest rate cut next week. The dollar weakened 0.14% to 143.99 Japanese yen. The greenback is on track for a monthly increase of 0.7% against the Japanese currency, the best performance since December, following four consecutive months of losses.

Jasper County veterans arrive in droves for recognition day at State Capitol
May 20—Everywhere you looked you saw a Jasper County veteran. They arrived to the Iowa State Capitol on a pair of buses. Several others drove their own vehicles with families or were chauffeured with a son or daughter. Many wore red or yellow T-shirts with the words "Jasper County Veteran" stitched over their hearts. It is estimated about a hundred veterans from Jasper County attended the Iowa Vietnam Veterans Recognition Day on May 14. The annual ceremony takes place on the south side of the capitol grounds near the Iowa Vietnam War Memorial Wall. Local veterans say it is quite the ordeal and it draws big crowds. "I've been there once before," said Vietnam veteran David Elliott. "We go out there and they have someone come in to give a speech, and it's recognition for people like me that have served their country. To me, it feels good to be recognized. Things were not favorable for us fellas when we came back." John Wennihan, a fellow Vietnam era veteran, said many returning soldiers back then made a conscious decision to not wear any regalia or clothing that would give people the impression they served during the war. They thought they were better off keeping their service a secret. Thankfully, sentiments have changed. "It makes a fella finally feel good," Elliott said. Nowhere was that more evident than the Iowa Vietnam Veterans Recognition Day ceremony. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds attended the ceremony and read aloud her proclamation. Retired United State Marine Corps Col. Gerald "Gerry" Berry told war stories. The crowd was big, just like the veterans said it would be. Veterans saluted their nation's flag during the National Anthem and the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance. Listen closely and you could hear a muffled "Oorah!" from old Marines. Gold Star Families — which are families who lost a loved one serving in the military — were recognized for their resilience. Jewel Gullett, of Newton, is part a Gold Star Family. Her brother, Rollin Davis, was killed in Vietnam in 1968. She still tears up thinking about her brother. She attended the ceremony in Des Moines to honor not only her brother but all veterans who served. It is important, she said, that their service is celebrated. "This is an honor to keep their memories alive," Gullett said, adding that she remembers her brother as a happy-go-lucky guy. "...He was a really good kid." This year's event was even more special as it was the 50-year anniversary of the fall of Saigon, which marked the end of the Vietnam War. To Elliott and Wennihan, it sure doesn't feel like 50 years have passed. "I remember things like it was just yesterday," Elliott said. "Believe me." Wennihan added, "Fifty years ago I was in an Army hospital still. I had a spinal cord injury from a back surgery. I had a blood clot. They medevacked me from Germany to Denver. So I was sitting in the hospital bed watching the fall of Saigon in a room full of wounded Vietnam vets. That was quite the deal." Doug Bishop, chair of the Jasper County Veterans Alliance, spoke on behalf of the "In Memory" program, which honors the veterans who have died from exposure to Agent Orange, post-traumatic stress disorder and other illnesses as a result of their service. Jasper County took the lead in the program in 2019. "All of you here as spouses and family members know 58,000 of our men and women died in Vietnam, but that war didn't kill everybody by the end of May 1975," Bishop said. "Coming up with PTSD, mental health issues, Agent Orange, all of the above. It took a lot more than 58,000 after that." The program was expanded statewide. When Jasper County first launched the program in 2019, it inducted 33 veterans. Bishop said this year alone 23 new inductees have been added, increasing the total number of Iowa Vietnam War veterans who died from duty-related illnesses to 180. "At one time we were second only to Indiana per capita as to how many veterans we had inducted," Bishop said. "I'm guessing if we were to check, damn, we might be first in the nation. So kudos to all of you who have done that. We're going to keep that push going."

New Delhi [India], May 16 (ANI): BJP leader Gaurav Bhatia on Friday termed the remarks of Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav referring to the caste of Wing Commander Vyomika Singh as 'extremely unfortunate'. 'It is extremely unfortunate that on one hand, the whole country is celebrating the Operation Sindoor and feeling proud of the Indian armed forces teaching Pakistan a lesson, while on the other hand, the Samajwadi Party is making anti-national and casteist statements,' Bhatia told ANI. He alleged that the leaders, like Ram Gopal Yadav did not want the country to progress under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 'He (Ram Gopal Yadav) did not even know the name of our national pride, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh... There is a reason for this toxicity. These people do not want the country to progress under PM Narendra Modi,' he said. 'If Akhilesh Yadav and Ram Gopal Yadav had read the law, they would have known that using casteist slurs is a crime under the SC/ST Act. So he has committed a crime too. I am sure that Akhilesh Yadav will not take any action against Ram Gopal Yadav,' he added. Meanwhile, Ram Gopal Yadav defended his remarks, referring to many cases of atrocities against minorities, Dalits and backward classes in north Indian states, especially Uttar Pradesh. Taking a dig at UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who labelled his remarks as 'casteist', Yadav said that the CM, under whose nose the atrocities are committed, reacted to his statement without even listening to it. He also ridiculed the media channels, saying nobody except the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) trusts them. 'I am surprised that the Chief Minister, under whose nose unimaginable atrocities are being committed on minorities, Dalits and backward classes, tweeted without even listening to my entire statement. I have no complaint against the media channels that have taken over Islamabad and Rawalpindi because no one except the ruling party trusts them,' Yadav posted on X. The SP MP clarified that he was making a point about people with 'corrupt mentality' that those who 'abused' Colonel Sofiya Qureshi on the basis of her religion would have abused Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Air Marshal AK Bharti, had they known their caste location. 'In some states of North India, particularly Uttar Pradesh, false cases are being filed against people on the basis of religion, caste and class. Encounters are being carried out on the basis of caste and religion. Property is being seized by declaring them gangsters on the basis of caste, religion and class. Women are being tortured on the basis of caste, religion and class. Postings of employees and officers are done on the basis of caste, religion and class...,' Yadav said. 'I had made statements about people with such corrupt mentality in a programme yesterday, stating that Colonel Sofia was abused because she was identified by her religion, Foreign Secretary Mistry was abused, if these abusers had come to know that Vyomika Singh is Jatav and Air Marshal Bharti is Yadav, then they would not have refrained from abusing these officers also,' he added.
