Anwar: Finance Ministry to enhance pondok education system to meet current needs

PUTRAJAYA — The Ministry of Finance (Treasury) has been instructed to explore ways to enhance the capabilities of pondok institutions, including upgrading existing facilities and improving the curriculum to better align with current needs. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the move is crucial to ensure students are not only grounded in religious knowledge but also equipped to face contemporary challenges, Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, gave his assurance that the traditional religious syllabus will remain intact. However, it will be complemented with elements such as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), technology, and artificial intelligence (AI). 'We will not interfere with the existing syllabus of pondok institutions, but we will incorporate new components such as TVET and AI. 'It is not about changing the system, but to complement and enhance it with elements that reflect current demands,' he said during a gathering with staff of the Prime Minister's Department here today. The Prime Minister emphasised that the government's efforts to strengthen pondok institutions through upgraded infrastructure and an improved curriculum should not be politicised, as they are sincere initiatives to ensure students are not left behind in the national mainstream. He said the move is made purely in the public interest, without any political agenda. 'Insya-Allah, I will contact Syeikh Wazir Che Awang Al-Makki Hafizahullah (Jabhah Pondok Kelantan deputy chairman) to accept his invitation to visit his pondok. This has nothing to do with politics. We should not be so tied to political views that we fail to recognise the greater good,' he said. As an example, Anwar said the government had already started efforts to empower huffaz (Quran memorisers) by providing TVET education to 12,500 students in their respective institutions 'This is a significant number. Imagine the impact if this approach continues — it would offer our children greater exposure,' he said. Anwar also commended the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) and its agencies, led by Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, for organising the 2025 Muzakarah Umara' dan Ulama' Pondok Kebangsaan (UMRAN) and Malaysia Bermunajat programmes last Saturday. He described both events as important platforms for strengthening ties between religious scholars and national leaders in advancing the MADANI policy framework. 'They also serve as a space to hear the views and advice of the ulama, ensuring that efforts to promote Islamic understanding and activities in the country remain in line with Islamic principles,' he said. Anwar further stressed the importance of upholding values, ethics, and religious understanding while pursuing technological progress for national development. 'While we aim high and embrace modern technology, we must stay grounded. 'We may reach for the skies and master the latest technologies, but without firm roots in our faith, ethics, culture, and religion, that progress will be hollow,' he said. — BERNAMA

Kelantan Ulama expresses support for Anwar's leadership

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim PUTRAJAYA (July 20): Deputy chairman of Jabhah Pondok Kelantan Syeikh Wazir Che Awang Al-Makki Hafizahullah has expressed full support for the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and called for the continuation of the Anwar-led MADANI government. He said the religious scholars would continue to support the Prime Minister and were ready to assist in overcoming any challenges during his administration. 'We fully support the leadership of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. God willing, we stand behind him. 'All the obstacles and challenges in this country can be overcome. Malaysia can be saved, and the government under Datuk Seri's leadership can be preserved,' he said when speaking at the 'Malaysia Bermunajat 2025' programme at Putra Mosque here last night. The programme, attended by Anwar and thousands of congregants, aimed to enliven the culture of 'munajat' (supplication) and appreciation of knowledge as the foundation for uniting the ummah and building a society grounded in Malaysian MADANI values. Meanwhile, Syeikh Wazir said frequent changes in government within short periods were not encouraged in Islam, and suggested that a good administration be maintained for up to 10 years so that the people could benefit from it. 'In Malaysia, we see governments changing every five years, two years, or even after one year, resulting in shifting policies, the decline of religious schools, and a decline in all areas, (including) the economy. This is not the Islamic way,' he said. Yesterday, Anwar urged Muslims to continue defending the legacy of Islamic scholarship and strengthening the relationship between religious scholars (ulama) and leaders (umara) in facing the challenges of the modern era, including the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and digitalisation. – Bernama

Frequent change of govt is against Islamic values, says Kelantan cleric

Sheikh Wazir Che Awang Al-Makki Hafizahullah said changing the government frequently could negatively affect the advancement of Islam. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : A prominent religious scholar from Kelantan has expressed hope that the unity government under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will remain until the end of its term. Sheikh Wazir Che Awang Al-Makki Hafizahullah, deputy chairman of Jabhah Pondok Kelantan, warned that a frequent change of government was 'not in line with Islamic values'. He said it could negatively affect the advancement of Islam and the economy. He was believed to be responding to ongoing efforts by certain quarters – particularly the opposition – to topple the government through a rally scheduled for July 26. Sheikh Wazir, who is adviser to Kesatuan Pondok Kelantan, said constant shifts in government disrupt the lives of ordinary people as well as the development of pondok schools and economic stability. 'In Malaysia, we get a new government every five years – sometimes every two, or even just one year. 'When policies keep changing, it weakens the pondok system and dampens the economy. This is not in line with Islamic values,' he said during a talk at Masjid Putra, Putrajaya, last night. According to Sheikh Wazir, the large turnout at the religious gathering last night reflects strong support for Anwar, who has led the unity government since late 2022. 'God willing, all the challenges and obstacles facing our nation can be overcome. 'May the government led by Datuk Seri (Anwar) be preserved,' he said. Yesterday, Anwar challenged his critics to table a vote of no confidence in the Dewan Rakyat if they wish to take over Putrajaya. He called for those who want to topple the government to follow the proper process. If they did not have the support in the Dewan Rakyat, he said, they must wait for the next general election instead of resorting to street demonstrations or inciting the public. Perikatan Nasional (PN) has planned a 'Turun Anwar' mass rally for July 26 in Kuala Lumpur to push for Anwar's resignation. The organisers claim they expect up to 300,000 participants, although a similar protest in Shah Alam earlier this month drew just over 300. Anwar also called for caution in responding to voices of hatred, including those from a handful of religious figures. However, he did not name them. Former economy minister Rafizi Ramli has also said that Anwar should remain as prime minister until the end of his term to ensure political stability amid economic uncertainty
