Crosswalks, green spaces among considerations as Youngstown revamps roads
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – When Youngstown is redoing some of the city's major streets, should more be considered than just cars and trucks? Some members of city council are saying yes and discussed a new policy Monday. Stand around Market and Midlothian on Youngstown's south side at mid-afternoon, and you'll see people struggling to cross the street. 'It's very dangerous to cross there. There aren't very good markings for pedestrians,' said Jack Daughtery, with Health Community Partnership. Daughtery presented city council's committee on Climate Change, Environment and Sustainable Technology with a draft of what may become a Complete and Green Streets Policy. 'The general premise of it is to make sure that when we're redesigning a street, we are factoring in all the users of the street and not just the cars traveling from A to B, but our residents,' Daughtery said. Youngstown's policy was drafted from a similar policy in Cleveland Heights. Among the considerations were people using wheelchairs or bicycles, and how to properly contain stormwater runoff. Take Market Street — for example — which, at five lanes, may be too much road. There's been talk of putting in a boulevard. 'All of which would make it easier for people to cross and utilize Market Street, as well as create an active green space to do water runoff,' said Sixth Ward Councilwoman Anita Davis. All the additions may cost extra. 'In some cases, there's money left on the table for these types of improvements that's simply not applied for because they're not considered,' Daughtery said. No council member on the committee was opposed to the policy. 'We can do better when we plan. We can have safer and green streets. It takes time to have that perspective to see those things implemented, and can we make that actually a reality?' said Fourth Ward Councilman Mike Ray. The Green Streets Policy handed out at Monday's meeting is 11 pages long. It will now go to the law department for review and eventually be presented to the entire city council for a vote. The committee also agreed to recommend to the full council the hiring of an expert witness to advise and testify if needed in a case before the Ohio Environmental Review Appeals Commission. ISU beats Bradley, ends six-game losing streak to Braves
NORMAL, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — Freshman Jack Daughtery hit seven three-pointers and scored 25 points to lead Illinois State past Bradley, 82-71, in an I-74 rivalry game at CEFCU Arena on Wednesday. The Redbirds snapped a six-game losing streak to Bradley and a three-game Missouri Valley losing streak in the process. Daughtery hit a trio of three-pointers to help ISU run out to a 35-27 lead at halftime. Bradley, which got 16 points apiece from Duke Deen and Zek Montgomery, closed the ISU lead to 40-37 early in the second half but could get no closer. ISU built a 14-point with about eight minutes to play and went 19 of 24 from the free throw line in the second half to secure the win. Johnny Kinziger, who had to be stitched up after taking a shot above his left eye in the first half, scored 19 points for ISU (16-12, 8-9.
