The NRL players with futures uncertain beyond October

WHO IS OFF CONTRACT AT YOUR NRL CLUB? BRISBANE Corey Jensen, Cory Paix, Delouise Hoeter, Fletcher Baker, Jack Gosiewski, Jaiyden Hunt The fact fellow hookers Ben Hunt and Billy Walters will still be there next year has made the situation difficult for Paix. Salary cap space is tight with regular front-liners Corey Jensen and Jack Gosiewski still unsigned. CANBERRA Albert Hopoate, Danny Levi, Josh Papali'i The big question is how the Papali'i situation plays out. The veteran is rethinking a move to England, but fitting him in would require Canberra to clear cap space given they budgeted on 2025 being his last year. CANTERBURY Blake Taaffe, Blake Wilson, Daniel Suluka-Fifita, Drew Hutchison, Jake Turpin. The Bulldogs' rebuild is nearing completion with a settled roster. Hutchison is likely to follow fellow half Toby Sexton out of the club, with a move to the Super League on his English passport. CRONULLA Billy Burns, Kade Dykes, Mawene Hiroti, Sam Stonestreet, Will Kennedy. Salary cap space is tight and the Sharks are unlikely to meet Kennedy's asking price. He is yet to sign elsewhere and it could drag into the off season. Hiroti and Stonestreet have impressed this year. DOLPHINS Felise Kaufusi, Harrison Graham, Josh Kerr, Kenny Bromwich, Mark Nicholls, Sean O'Sullivan. The Dolphins have some big calls to make on their middle forwards, with Kerr and Nicholls both still unsigned. Already have Selwyn Cobbo and Morgan Knowles incoming. GOLD COAST Iszac Fa'asuamaleaui, Jacob Alick-Wiencke, Ryan Foran, Tom Weaver, Tony Francis Decisions need to be made around the balance of their roster, even without any big names off contract. Until they make a call on their coach for 2026, re-signings are up in the air. MANLY Clayton Faulalo, Daly Cherry-Evans, Ethan Bullemor, Gordon Chan Kum Tong, Siua Taukeiaho, Tommy Talau Manly are confident Bullemor is close to taking up a four-year deal. The club have also made clear their desire to keep Taukeiaho for another year. Faulalo is nearing a two-year extension while talks have opened with Talau for a one-year contract. MELBOURNE Dean Ieremia, Grant Anderson, Kane Bradley, Marion Seve, Tui Kamikamica Anderson will join Brisbane, while Kamikamica was also linked with the Broncos. Melbourne's bigger challenges loom in 2026, with a litany of stars off contract. NEWCASTLE Adam Elliott, Jack Hetherington, Jackson Hastings, Jake Arthur, Tyson Frizell Dane Gagai was recently extended and fellow veteran Frizell is expected to follow. Elliott has attracted serious interest from multiple of clubs, with a Sydney move a real option. NORTH QUEENSLAND Braidon Burns, Jordan McLean, Semi Valemai, Tom Duffy Duffy is expected to depart after the Cowboys re-signed fellow half Jake Clifford. Veteran forward McLean is yet to make a call on his future. PARRAMATTA Joey Lussick, Wiremu Greig, Haze Dunster Parramatta have already moved on several players, leaving very few off contract. Lussick would be unlikely to remain at the club, following Tallyn da Silva's mid-season arrival and Ryley Smith's rise at hooker. PENRITH Brad Schneider, Daine Laurie, Harrison Hassett, Luke Sommerton, Mavrik Geyer, Preston Riki, Soni Luke Schneider must decide whether he wants to remain back up to Nathan Cleary or consider life elsewhere. That decision may have ramifications for others, with limited cap space. ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA Corey Allan, Michael Molo, Raymond Faitala-Mariner, Sione Finau, Viliami Fifita, David Klemmer The Dragons have a wealth of young forwards coming through, meaning the likes of Faitala-Mariner are expected to leave the club. Finau has toured Canberra, with the Dragons facing a battle to keep the young winger. SOUTH SYDNEY Cody Walker, Davvy Moale, Jacob Host, Jayden Sullivan, Shaqai Mitchell, Siliva Havili Walker and Moale's deals are expected to be completed soon, while Sullivan is at this stage due to return to Wests Tigers. Havili could head to the Super League, but there has been interest from two other clubs. SYDNEY ROOSTERS Ethan Roberts, Tyler Moriarty, Zach Dockar-Clay Have a reasonably settled roster, with Daly Cherry-Evans still expected to be announced as a big-name recruit. WARRIORS Bunty Afoa, Ed Kosi, Te Maire Martin, Tom Ale Another settled roster as a club on the up. Martin had been linked to a Super League move earlier this year. WESTS TIGERS Adam Doueihi, Brent Naden, Charlie Staines, Josh Feledy, Justin Matamua, Taylan May Doueihi looms as one of the biggest off-contract talents in the NRL, with the Tigers in a fight to keep him. May had made a case for an extension with his start to life at Concord, while Naden is expected to stay at the Tigers. WHO IS OFF CONTRACT AT YOUR NRL CLUB? Footy star Jack Gosiewski reveals he's been hit by a family tragedy that struck both his parents

Brisbane Broncos forward Jack Gosiewski has opened up about the tough personal challenges he's faced over the last year, including the heartbreaking loss of both of his parents. The 31-year-old journeyman has been named on the bench for Friday's match with the Bulldogs following a stint on the sidelines with a fractured arm. While he was recovering from injury he was rocked by the death of his father, which followed his mother passing away just 12 months earlier. When asked about what it was like to return from the 10-week injury layoff, he replied: 'It is a little bit of a hard question. 'I had some stuff happen away from football in that period of time so the injury was the least of my worries. 'I lost my father in that period so that was a tough time. 'The injury was the least of my worries. 'I missed not playing football but I had other things going on in life that were extremely tough. 'The injury was nothing to me.' Gosiewski has shown incredible resiliance over the last year to not let his unimaginable private pain impact his performance on the pitch. 'It has been quite tough,' Gosiewski said. 'It happened pretty fast (his father's passing) and since I have been at the club I have also lost my mother. 'I lost her last year. 'I have had two broken arms, lost both parents and opened a business so it has been chaotic. 'The only reason I am saying it now is because I am proud of the way I have held myself and still been able to play football. 'They are a big part of my life and I think about them going into every game.' The Broncos have won their last three, but will need to be on top of their game to beat the high-flying Bulldogs. Gosiewski is off contract after the 2025 season, but is hoping for an extension if he can deliver consistent results. 'It is good to be back,' he said. 'I broke my wrist in round six or seven and we were on a good run prior to that. 'I have come back and we are winning again which is good. I can't say it is anything I have done but it is good to be in the right moments and I am just enjoying my football and doing my role the best I can.'

NRL world rallies around Brisbane Broncos star after awful family development

NRL fans and commentators are sending their support to Jack Gosiewski after the Brisbane Broncos player was rocked by the recent death of his father amid a difficult time. Speaking on Tuesday, the Broncos forward revealed he's now lost both of his parents during his short stint at the club, which began last season. The journeyman player has been named on the bench for the Broncos' clash with the Bulldogs on Friday night, after a recent 10-week layoff due to a broken wrist. It was during his stint on the sidelines that his father passed away, just 12 months after he also lost his mum. When asked about his long lay-off and whether it was difficult not playing, he said it was nothing compared to losing his parents. "I had some stuff happen away from football in that period of time, so the injury was the least of my worries," he admitted. 'I lost my father in that period so that was a tough time. The injury was the least of my worries. I missed not playing football but I had other things going on in life that were extremely tough. The injury was nothing to me.' He said about his parents: "They are a big part of my life and I think about them going into every game,. The only reason I am saying it now is because I am proud of the way I have held myself and still been able to play football." Gosiewski was a surprise selection in Michael Maguire's starting team at the beginning of the 2025 season, which came as a reward for the hard work he put in during pre-season. The 31-year-old's private pain has not impacted his performance, which was only de-railed by a second broken arm in two years. "Since I have been at the club I have also lost my mother," he said. "I lost her last year. I have had two broken arms, lost both parents and opened a business, so it has been chaotic." Gosiewski recently opened a Chargrill Charlie's restaurant with his partner - the first of its kind in Queensland. Broncos players and officials showed their support for their beloved teammate when they all rocked up the store's recent opening. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jack Gosiewski (@j__gosling) The 31-year-old is only contracted for the remainder of this season, but a strong performance against Canterbury on Friday night will go a long way towards earning him an extension. "I'm off contract but the plan is to stay here," he said. "We put that on hold while I was injured but I am back playing football now. I am sure those conversations (with the club) will start to come now. "It is good to be back. I broke my wrist in round six and we were on a good run prior to that. I have come back and we are winning again which is good. I can't say it is (due to) anything I have done but it is good to be involved in the right moments and I am just enjoying my football and doing my role the best I can." NRL world tears into Nicho Hynes for flop as rugby league world commend common sense officiating

NRL fans have torn into Nicho Hynes after an embarrassing dive in the Sharks' 34-28 defeat to the Broncos on Sunday afternoon. Cronulla looked in complete control in the first half before Brisbane roared to life in the second term, piling on the points to produce an incredible comeback victory that Michael Maguire will hope kickstarts their season. FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every game of every round in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership, LIVE with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. However, it was Hynes' effort to stall Brisbane's comeback that raised a lot of eyebrows. With the Sharks up 28-18, the Broncos manufactured an overlap on the left edge. And in a desperate attempt to turn the momentum, Hynes appeared to make the conscious decision to seek out Jack Gosiewski, throwing himself to the ground after minor contact appealing for an obstruction penalty. Broncos winger Josiah Karapani then finished off the sweeping play by putting the ball in the corner, with referee Wyatt Raymond awarding the try. You can watch the controversial try in the player above. But with a hint of obstruction, many felt it was a certainty that the young winger's try would be taken away. 'We can't let him get away with this,' Andrew Voss exclaimed in Fox Sports commentary. 'I know we have seen things similar before but please. If this is given a no-try he gets an acting job with Neighbours. 'Everyone stops and throws their arms up, what have we created here?' In recent years almost every time an attacker makes contact with the defender, a penalty goes to the defensive team. It has seen many players deliberately seek out contact to avoid a try being conceded or to turn momentum. But this time the Bunker didn't overturn the decision, in what many felt was a line in the sand moment. 'I think that's a hallelujah moment for the game on obstruction and I hope that everyone learns a lesson there,' Voss continued. While NRL great Cooper Cronk was relieved common sense was applied by officials. 'Nicho Hynes has gone to act as if he's been obstructed,' Cooper Cronk continued. 'Well done referee, well done bunker. Cronulla Sharks are looking for a shortcut. As for the NRL world, they tore into Hynes and hoped the call signalled a new era of players seeking contact not fooling officials. 'That is a terrible dive by Nicho,' one fan wrote on X. 'Common sense prevailed with a faux obstruction claim,' another added. 'I hope that's a sign of what is to come. Justice served there,' a third said. While a fourth added: 'Haha that's just sad from Hynes'.

Broncos respond amid drama around Reece Walsh and Payne Haas before NRL opener

Broncos coach Michael Maguire will be thrilled to hear both Payne Haas and Reece Walsh recovered from their minor injuries sustained on the weekend during the club's win over the Bulldogs in the pre-season challenge. The Broncos have proved to be the most impressive team in pre-season having won both their trial games with a close to full-strength Brisbane side dismantling a strong Bulldogs line-up. The club took home the $100,000 prize money for winning the competition, but there was bigger concerns for the coach. Maguire would have been hoping his players got through the final hit-out before the opening round of the NRL unscathed. Although Kotoni Staggs, Walsh and Haas all ended up on the sidelines in the second-half with some concerns. Fans were waiting to see if this was just a precaution with the Broncos' opening game against the Roosters taking place next Thursday. But in great news for the coach and the players, AAP reported all three players are set to take their place in the starting 13 against the Roosters. Staggs was the biggest concern for Maguire having left the game after just a few minutes. Footage showed the centre hobbling around the dressing room with a quad injury. Staggs has stood up as a leader during Maguire's short time as coach and is reportedly close to signing a new deal with the Broncos. And Staggs' inclusion for round one would be huge boost for Maguire as he tosses up a number of selection calls. One of the biggest decisions Maguire is tossing up is on whether to start Brendan Piakura or Jack Gosiewski in the second-row. Piakura was a regular under former coach Kevin Walters in a season the Broncos missed the top eight. However, Maguire is a fan of Gosiewski's work rate on the edges. Speaking on the dilemma, Broncos great Corey Parker suggested Maguire was rewarding off-season work ethic to start the season. While Parker suggests Piakura could come into the starting team down the track, Gosiewski has impressed Maguire as the coach sets the standards he wants in training. "I think, yes Piakura is in a battle with Jack Gosiewski. When Madge Maguire first got to the Broncos he delivered his speech and wants people that have had a great off-season, who have worked extremely hard, to know they will get the first opportunity," Parker said on SEN Radio. "To his word, I think Jack Gosiewski's has had a terrific off-season and he is getting his opportunity. But I don't think it will pan out that, as the course of the year goes on." Deine Mariner is also pushing to retain his position in the starting 13 with Maguire opting to start the speedster on the bench in the second trail. While the Broncos were delivered good news, the Titans not so much. Veteran Kieran Foran is set to miss around 12 weeks after tearing his bicep in the club's second trial game. This will mark the 18th time in 18 seasons that Foran has had surgery. Foran was set to play a utility role for the Titans in 2025. But the veteran will have to wait till halfway through the season to get another chance to join his teammates in what could be his final year in the NRL. While Foran will be missing, he was impressed with his teammates during the second trial win as the Titans look to improve on rollercoaster 2024 season. "The way they connected out there, they've been doing it all pre-season and they're just excitement machines," he said. "You could just see with their style of footy they were able to play off the cuff and they just allowed their natural ability of skill and speed to take over at times which was super impressive. They're going to play an instrumental role in the outcome of our season and they're all up for it."
