Joe Pyfer: 'It's wild' that I'm not a ranked UFC middleweight after Kelvin Gastelum win

Joe Pyfer questions the UFC middleweight rankings after his most recent win. Pyfer (14-3 MMA, 5-1 UFC) rebounded from his main event loss to Jack Hermansson with a knockout of Marc-Andre Barriault at UFC 303, followed by a unanimous decision win over former interim title challenger Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 316 last month. Advertisement The 28-year-old Dana White's Contender Series graduate is eyeing a return by the end of the year. "Somebody in the top 15 (is what I want). I don't have anybody specific," Pyfer told MMA Junkie Radio. "There's a lot of fights booked right now in the top 15, so I've got to wait to see how it plays out. It's obviously got to make sense as far as location of where I'm fighting, but I would like to fight September, October." When pressed on a name, Pyfer said he'd fight anyone, but was more concerned about his placement in the UFC's middleweight rankings. "There's many people, but I'm not going to voice it because UFC doesn't care what I want," Pyfer said. "The UFC offers you a fight and usually you've got to take it, type of deal. So in a perfect world, if I was allowed to fight who I want, I'd be much higher ranked. Advertisement "I think it's a little bit wild that I'm 5-1 and I'm not in the top 15. I just beat a legend who got inducted to the Hall of Fame for his fight with Izzy (Adesanya), but then you've got guys who are 3-2 that are top 15 or whatever Abus Magomedov is. I think that's ridiculous, so it is what it is." This article originally appeared on MMA Junkie: Joe Pyfer thinks 'it's wild' that he's not a ranked UFC middleweight

The Thrill and Agony: UFC 317 winner and loser reactions

Since the early days when the sport was anything but a mainstream endeavor the MMA industry has thrived and survived through various websites, forums, and, perhaps most importantly, social-media platforms. Fighters interact with fans, each other and many more through the likes of X, Facebook and Instagram, which helps outsiders get a deeper look into the minds of the athletes. Following Saturday's UFC 317 event in Las Vegas, several of the winning and losing fighters, along with their coaches, training partners or family members, took to social media to react to the event or share a message with supporters. UFC 317 takeaways: Ilia Topuria's bulletproof rise to star status

What mattered most at UFC 317 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas? Here are a few post-fight musings … Terrance McKinney is an all-time hammer In the many years I've spent covering this sport, there are few fighters who have shown the brute force of Terrance McKinney and be such a good one-way competitor. Advertisement There have been others, like the late Anthony "Rumble" Johnson, who were able to carry that style to the top of the sport and fight for titles. It's going to be much tougher in the lightweight division where McKinney (17-7 MMA, 7-4 UFC) exists, but after his 55-second submission of Viacheslav Borshchev, he once again reiterated his championship ambitions. McKinney is incredibly tough to deal with in the opening moments of a fight. All seven of his octagon victories have come inside the opening round, as goes for all of his career win overall with the exception of one. We've seen several times now, however, that when someone can last or meet him with an equal degree of force, the tide can suddenly turn. It would be fascinating to see McKinney string a few more of these together and put himself in position for ranked opposition. Maybe that level of consistency is impossible with his style, but it will be must-watch TV for however long he tries. Gregory Rodrigues flatlines Jack Hermansson There was no better momentum-setter for the pay-per-view than what Gregory Rodrigues did in the featured prelim bout at middleweight when he nearly took the pulse of Jack Hermansson with one of the scarier knockouts in recent memory. Advertisement The fight-ending left hand was all that was needed from Rodrigues (17-6 MMA, 8-3 UFC) , yet he opted to put one more entirely unneeded blow on the chin of Hermansson (24-9 MMA, 11-7 UFC), which thankfully he was able to get up after. There's a mix of blame between referee Herb Dean and Rodrigues ability to recognize a situation like that and walk off from his opponent. Rodrigues is named "Robocop" for a reason, though, so perhaps we should known better, and the entirety of the blame should be pinned on Dean. Either way, that was a knockout that will be remembered for some time. Beneil Dariush's big bounce back Beneil Dariush was in need of a win as much as anyone off the card following back-to-back first-round stoppage losses that were followed by a nearly two-year layoff. Advertisement He had to dig deep and survive a first-round knockdown, but Dariush (23-6-1 MMA, 17-6-1 UFC) got the job done in a gritty unanimous decision win over Renato Moicano and is now tied for the second-most victories in UFC lightweight history behind only Jim Miller. It would be a steep odds to bet on Dariush ever getting his elusive title shot at 155 pounds, but the performance showed he's not completely out of the race. There's still life in him at 36, and he'll get a shot to prove how much against a relevant name against perhaps the most intriguing weight class in the sport. An intruiging future at flyweight Joshua Van made his statement prior to the flyweight title fight when he went to war against Brandon Royval and emerged the winner by unanimous decision for what is his second victory in a 21-day stretch. Advertisement Everyone has seen potential in Van (15-2 MMA, 8-1 UFC) since his UFC entry, but now at 23 and with experience under his belt, he is becoming something special and carving into his ultimate peak as a fighter. There were many eyes on this moment, and he won the fight, returned cageside then witnesses the co-headliner where champ Alexander Pantoja continued his reign to defeat Kai Kara-France by third-round submission for his fourth defense. Pantoja (30-5 MMA, 14-3 UFC) spoke high words about Van's rise through the division prior to the event, and if there's any champion who needs a compelling challenger right now, it's him. This is a marquee title bout at 125 pounds, and hopefully the UFC promotes it as such. Getting Van into the cage for a faceoff was a good start. Ilia Topuria sets stage for superstar status Ilia Topuria's assent to unprecedented UFC history has been bulletproof. He did some amazing things prior to Saturday, but a first-round knockout of Charles Oliveira to become the first undefeated two-division champion in UFC history is easily his crowning achievement. Advertisement Although Oliveira might not be his best win after what he did to Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway, but it's certainly the most high profile. Topuria (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) made a dazzling amount of pre-fight prognostications, and they all came true. It has shades of Conor McGregor, but his in-cage ability might be something superior. Claims of a media push for Topuria coming into this event are now all dismissed. If you're a doubter or a hater, it might be time to reconsider. Sure, there's room to pick apart Topuria's resume just like anyone else at the top of this sport right now, but it's an unreal stretch, and he just achieved perhaps the greatest three-fight run in UFC history. Topuria has now entered the echelon where you must deny him at your own peril. His words might seem ridiculous, but the evidence is overwhelming. He is everything the UFC needed right now, and delivered a memorable moment that palpably invigorated life into the entire sport of MMA. That's something only stars can do it, and this felt like the moment where Topuria made his global star presence known. UFC 317 video: Gregory Rodrigues scores frightening knockout of Jack Hermansson

Gregory Rodrigues scored a vicious one-punch knockout of Jack Hermansson at UFC 317 that will be the new standard of his highlight reel. In the first round of the middleweight bout Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Rodrigues (17-6 MMA, 8-3 UFC) caught Hermansson (24-9 MMA, 11-7 UFC) with a clean left hand that immediately stiffened him on the canvas. One unnecessary hammerfist sealed the show at the 4:21 mark of Round 1. Advertisement Hermansson was down for several minutes after the knockout blow connected, but eventually got back to his feet and left the octagon under his own power. Check out a replay of the nasty knockout below (via X): "From my last fight (that I lost to Jared Cannonier), I learned a lot about patience," Rodrigues said to Joe Rogan in his post-fight interview. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - FEBRUARY 10: Jack Hermansson of Sweden prepares to face Joe Pyfer in a ... More middleweight fight during the UFC Fight Night event at UFC APEX on February 10, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images) The UFC 317 pay-per-view fight card takes place this weekend. The event, which features two title fights at the top of the marquee, takes place on Saturday, June 28, from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV. While the spotlight will shine brightest on the top two fights on the card, Ilia Topuria vs. Charles Oliveira and Alexandre Pantoja vs. Kai Kara-France at the top of the card, we want to prepare fans for all 12 UFC 317 matchups. Below, we look at the betting odds, line movement, predictions, and picks for the four-fight preliminary card of UFC 317. In the UFC 317 main event, former UFC featherweight champ Ilia Topuria battles ex-UFC lightweight titleholder Charles Oliveira for the vacant lightweight strap. Meanwhile, in the co-main event, UFC flyweight kingpin Alexandre Pantoja puts his title on the line against Kai Kara-France. UFC 317 serves as the anchor event for the 2025 edition of International Fight Week. The five-fight UFC 317 PPV card streams on ESPN+ pay-per-view, following ESPN prelims and ESPN+ early prelims. UFC 317 Preliminary Card Jack Hermansson vs. Gregory Rodrigues - Middleweight Hyder Amil vs. Jose Miguel Delgado - Featherweight Viviane Araujo vs. Tracy Cortez - Strawweight Terrance McKinney vs. Viacheslav Borshchev - Lightweight UFC 317 Fight Card: Preliminary Card Odds And Predictions - Jack Hermansson Vs. Gregory Rodrigues LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - FEBRUARY 15: Gregory Rodrigues of Brazil prepares to face Jared Cannonier in a ... More middleweight fight during the UFC Fight Night event at UFC APEX on February 15, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) A former Cage Warriors middleweight titleholder, Jack Hermansson (24-8) has been with the UFC since 2016. While the 37-year-old has had an up-and-down run with the promotion, Hermansson has never lost two fights in a row under the UFC banner. He avoided that fate in February 2024 when he picked up a decision win over Joe Pyfer in the main event of a UFC Fight Night Card. With that win, Hermansson enters UFC 317 on a 5-4 run dating back to 2019, alternating wins and losses. Gregory Rodrigues (16-6) was the LFA middleweight champ before he joining the UFC in 2021. Rodrigues has a UFC record of 7-3 heading into UFC 317. The 33-year-old was on a three-fight winning streak heading into his most recent bout, a February 2025 matchup opposite Jared Cannonier at the top of a UFC Fight Night card. While Rodrigues shared in the 'Fight of the Night' bonus that night, he was on the wrong-end of his fourth career knockout loss. The betting odds for this scrap saw Rodrigues open as a -235 betting favorite over the +200 Hermansson. Those odds are still in favor of Rodrigues (-208), while Hermansson is listed as the +178 betting underdog. It's worth considering the fights these two last competed in because this could look like those fights. The only difference being this is a three-round affair an those were five rounders. If Hermansson can survive the power of Rodrigues, he can win, if Rodrigues has worked on his cardio, he could win. The pick is for Gregory Rodrigues to win via decision. UFC 317 Fight Card: Preliminary Card Odds And Predictions - Hyder Amil Vs. Jose Miguel Delgado LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - MARCH 01: Hyder Amil of the Philippines reacts after a featherweight fight ... More against William Gomis of France during the UFC Fight Night event at UFC APEX on March 01, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) In this 145-pound scrap we have Hyder Amil (11-0) vs. Jose Miguel Delgado (9-1). Amil is a product of the Dana White's Contender Series, picking up his contract in 2023. Since then, he is 3-0 in the UFC with two knockouts, and most recently a split-decision win. Delgado, a product of the 2024 edition of the DWCS, is 1-0 with the UFC, earning a knockout victory in his UFC debut. All of Delgado's wins have come via finish (five knockouts, four subs), while Amil has six knockouts, one submission and four decisions. The opening odds had Amil as the -131 favorite over the +111 Delgado. The line has flipped on this matchup. Today, Delgado is a -170 favorite over the +145 Amil. We have not seen Delgado tested by UFC-level competition. That will change on Saturday. Because of that, the pick is Amil to win via decision. UFC 317 Fight Card: Preliminary Card Odds And Predictions - Viviane Araujo Vs. Tracy Cortez LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - SEPTEMBER 16: Tracy Cortez reacts after her victory over Jasmine Jasudavicius of ... More Canada in a flyweight fight during the Noche UFC event at T-Mobile Arena on September 16, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images) In this contest we have two ranked women's flyweight competitors. Viviane Araujo (13-6) is the No. 8 125-pound contender, while Tracy Cortez (11-2) checks in at No. 10 in the division. Araujo enters UFC 317 coming off a November decision win over Karine Silva, while Cortez comes into International Fight Week following the first loss of her career, a July 2024 main event decision loss to former UFC strawweight champion Rose Namajunas. A lack of experience cost Cortez in that Namajunas fight, she's had nearly a year to work on upping her game, but she is entering this matchup coming off a surgery that knocked her out of a reported December booking opposite Miranda Maverick. Araujo opened as a +175 betting underdog to the -205 Cortez. Today, Cortez is -255 over the +215 Araujo. Araujo is a live dog because she's the better striker, but she has a tendency to fade as her fights wear on, with that, Cortez could take over with her wrestling. The pick is Cortez via decision. UFC 317 Fight Card: Preliminary Card Odds And Predictions - Terrance McKinney Vs. Viacheslav Borshchev LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - AUGUST 24: Viacheslav Borshchev of Russia reacts after his victory against James ... More Llontop of Peru in a lightweight fight during the UFC Fight Night event at UFC APEX on August 24, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC) Opening the UFC 317 prelims is a lightweight matchup between Terrance McKinney and Viacheslav Borshchev. McKinney (16-7) has been with the UFC since 2021. He is coming off a February TKO win over Damir Hadzovic, and is 6-4 with the UFC. Borshchev (8-5-1) made his UFC debut in 2022. He is 3-4-1 with the promotion. In his most recent fight, Borshchev lost a decision to Tom Nolan at UFC 312. The opening betting odds had McKinney as the -200 favorite over the +170 Borshchev. Today, McKinney is -170, while Borshchev is the +145 betting underdog. McKinney has never been the distance in the UFC. The question facing him is, can he get Borshchev out of the fight? Well, the only one who has finished Borshchev has been Chase Hooper and McKinney is not the grappler that Hooper is. The pick is Borshchev by knockout over a gassed McKinney after ther first round. We will have more on the UFC 317 fight card as the event nears. Also, look for live results, reactions, highlights and more for the UFC 317 pay-per-view card on fight night.
