BU icon among those elected to Hockey Hall of Fame

Jack Parker will take his rightful place in the Hockey Hall of Fame after he was named one of the eight member of the class of 2025 in the Builders category. Parker coached the Boston University men's ice hockey team for four decades and tallied more wins than any hockey coach at one school in the country. Advertisement Before he became the coach, Parker was the Terriers assistant coach in 1970 for three seasons. During his time as coach, BU won three NCAA titles and appeared in a record 24 NCAA tournaments. All 897 of Parker's wins came with BU. Parker is a three-time Coach of the Year and five-time Hockey East Coach of the Year. When he retired in 2013, Parker was the third-most winningest coach in NCAA history — something he still holds to this day — behind only Ron Mason and Jerry York. Before he was a coach, Parker also played at BU from 1965-68 and was a member of three Beanpot championship teams. He was named the Terriers captain for his senior year. He finished with a 897–472–115 record. Advertisement 'Forty-eight of the last 49 years I've been reporting for duty for BU hockey, and that's enough,' Parker said at his retirement press conference. 'It's been a great run, and I had a great time doing it.' Parker is already a member of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame after he was inducted in 2017. NHL legend traded by Bruins for now-coach elected to Hockey Hall of Fame

The Hockey Hall of Fame's class of 2025 featured plenty of Boston connections. Aside from Zdeno Chara (Bruins) and Jack Parker (Boston University) being elected to the Hall of Fame, Joe Thornton also received the call. Advertisement Thornton finished his 24-year long career with 430 goals, 1,109 assists in 1,714 games played across eight seasons with the Bruins, 15 with the San Jose Sharks and a season each with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Florida Panthers. Thornton was selected first overall by the Bruins in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. He was named captain of the team prior to the 2002-03 season. While he became an integral part of the lineup, things soured between the two sides when Thornton became a restricted free agent when the NHL resumed in 2005-06 after the 2004-05 season-long lockout. Thornton and the Bruins ultimately came to terms on a three-year deal in August before he was part of one of the most stunning trades in team history three months later. Advertisement The Bruins traded Thornton to the Sharks in exchange for Wayne Primeau and defenseman Brad Stuart, Mike O'Connell and now-Bruins coach Marco Sturm. 'The Joe Thornton trade, I mean, it was not my fault, right?' Sturm joked at his introductory press conference earlier this month. Thornton was named the Hart Trophy recipient as the NHL's MVP for the 2005-06 season. The NHL legend ranks 14th all-time in points, seventh in assists and sixth in games played. He's just one of 14 players to reach the 1,000-assist mark and became the seventh player to play in 1,500 games with 1,000 helpers and at 400 goals. Advertisement The Sharks decided to retire Thornton's No. 12 in 2024. It was just the second time they retired a number — the first being Patrick Marleau in 2023. Legendary Boston University coach Jack Parker elected into Hockey Hall of Fame

Legendary Boston University hockey coach Jack Parker will take his place in the Hockey Hall of Fame later this year. Parker was elected into the Hall on Tuesday as a builder, following his incredible 40-year career with the Terriers. Parker led the Terriers to 897 wins over his four decades on the BU bench, along with three National Championships (in 1978, 1995, and 2009). Boston University won 21 Beanpot titles under Parker, to go with six Hockey East tournament titles and eight Hockey East regular season championships. The Spencer Penrose Award for the top Division 1 hockey coach was awarded to Parker three times -- in 1975, 1978, and 2009 -- making him one of just three three-time recipients of the honor. Parker's 897 wins with BU is the most in NCAA history for a coach at one school. He also has the most NCAA appearances (24), Frozen Four appearances (13), and most importantly on the BU campus, Beanpot victories (21). Parker, who was born in Somerville and attended Catholic Memorial, started at Boston University as a player in 1965. He centered three Beanpot championship teams and was captain of the Terries in his senior season. Ater his playing days were over, Parker started as an assistant coach at Boston University in 1969, and was the program's head coach by 1973. Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2025 Parker will be enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame as a "builder inductee," a special section for non-players who helped build the game. Women's coach Daniele Sauvageau (currently the GM of Montreal's PWHL team) will also be enshrined as a builder, the first woman to receive the honor in the category. In addition to Parker and Sauvageau, former NHL players Zdeno Chara, Joe Thornton, Alexander Mogilny, and Duncan Keith were elected on Tuesday, along with women's hockey stars Brianna Decker and Jennifer Botterill. Botterill played professionally in Canada following her four-year career at Harvard University from 1998-2003, where she was a four-time All-American and became the first player to win the Patty Kazmaier Award (given to the best player in college hockey) twice.

Finland's AIATELLA secures funds for AI cardiovascular imaging solutions

Finnish startup AIATELLA has raised €2m ($2.27m) in financing to develop and scale its cardiovascular imaging technology powered by AI. The investment will support the company in conducting clinical trials and further developing its ultrasound-based preventative screening tool, which can identify and quantify carotid artery narrowing within minutes. Nordic Science Investments spearheaded the funding round, with contributions from Specialist VC, Business Finland, and Harjavalta Ventures, among other investors. The Automated Image Measurement technology of the startup leverages images from ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging to analyse vascular imaging. This multimodal technology identifies abnormalities and quantifies changes over time in those at risk. It significantly reduces the time specialists spend on manual image measurements and documentation. As a result, clinicians can dedicate more time to patient care. AIATELLA is currently navigating the medical approval processes in several European and North American countries, including France, the US, and the UK. AIATELLA co-founder and CEO Jack Parker said: 'Our technology helps medical professionals analyse imaging much more efficiently, and at an earlier stage, so patients can get help before it's too late.' Initially applied to the aorta artery, AIATELLA's vision extends to encompass all blood vessels in the body with its technology. The startup noted that it is also developing a portable ultrasound-based screening technology for mass screening of individuals prior to the occurrence of symptoms. This approach aims to facilitate early detection of cardiovascular diseases, which are a major cause of mortality worldwide. The technology has already been employed in the UK and Finland at screening events, where it has helped identify potentially at-risk individuals. AIATELLA also aims to gather data on the presentation and progression of cardiovascular conditions across different sexes and ethnicities, as symptoms can vary widely among these different groups.
