Travis Scott's ‘Jackboys 2' Tops Albums Chart
Travis Scott and his Jackboys collective's compilation album Jackboys 2 debuts at Number One on the Billboard 200 albums chart, as Billboard reports. It earned 232,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. Of those, 72,000 comprise streaming equivalent albums (SEA) equaling 94.68 million on-demand streams of the album's songs, according to Luminate. The follow-up to the chart-topping EP Jackboys from 2019, the sequel arrived on July 13 with seven songs available as a digital download and came in five vinyl variants. Its expanded version houses 17 tracks, available via digital download, streaming, and on CD with five variants. There is also a 20-song edition that dropped on July 17. Swag also debuts at Number One on the Top Streaming Albums chart (earning the equivalent of 198.77 million on-demand official streams of the set's songs), marking Bieber's biggest streaming week ever. Meanwhile, after ruling the top of the albums chart for its first eight weeks, Morgan Wallen's I'm the Problem drops to Number Three, with 147,000 equivalent album units earned. Debuting at Number Four is Clipse's Let God Sort Em Out. Their first album in nearly 16 years garners 118,000 equivalent album units. It's the second time the rap duo comprising Pusha T and Malice have made the Top 10, following Clipse's Lord Willin', which also opened at Number Four back on Sept. 7, 2002. Rounding out the Top Five, KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack falls from Number Two to Number Five. In its fourth week on the charts, it earned 85,000 equivalent album units. Jackboys 2 Album Review: Travis Scott needs better music to play at his India concert
Jackboys 2 Album Review: Everyone loves a good hip-hop group. It's quite apparent that the entire genre would never have been so polarising, controversial or iconic if it weren't for groups like the NWA, Wu-Tang Clan, Run DMC, D12 and more. Jackboys is a group consisting of rappers and producers who belong to Travis Scott's record label Cactus Jack, including Don Toliver, Sheck Wes, Chase B, SoFaygo and Scott himself. When the group announced themselves in 2019 with an album of the same name, no one was really hoping for the next hip-hop revolution. But now they have come out with a brand new project, and drumroll please….. it's the same songs they have been making for over a decade, and nothing has changed. One could say that Travis is trying to channel his inner Ice Cube in the sense that his 'art is a reflection of his reality', but if Travis' reality only contains blingy cars, questionable lyrics, money, and cocaine, well then he better start practising his older hits for when he comes to India, because no one wants to listen to this. Now don't get me wrong; the album isn't all trash. Actually, it's much better tied together than the previous Jackboys album. The 2019 album had an idea, but like any great thought that hits you at 1 am in the morning when you have been drinking lean for the past 4 hours, it vanished. The thought was incomplete, and except for that one TikTok trend, nothing truly came out of that entire project. Jackboys 2 starts on a good note though, with Scott relying on his evergreen cadence and tried-and-tested flow that made him successful enough to walk out of the Grammys when he lost to Cardi B. The track number 2, '2000 Excursion', is a direct reference to the car Ford Excursion and how the rap group Three 6 Mafia (who hated flying) actually would only use this huge car to go around the country without having to worry about customs agents asking, 'What's in the cup?' After a confusing first verse by Scott, we hear a very interesting beat switch which is completely botched by Sheck Wes talking about the amount of women he has on his payroll (it was much less civilised than this). Don and Scott give it another attempt and sound like kids who just figured out the auto-tune function on their karaoke set. ALSO READ: Justin Bieber album Swag review: Bieber needs to take notes from Pritam and keep it simple Sir 21 Savage features on the next track, and Scott's first verse on the song is his best contribution to the album till now. Solid similes, strong references and catchy flow all make up for a good first half, but due to that ever-growing obsession with doing something different (while ending up making the same thing), the beat of the song switches again before Savage lays down probably his weakest verse, and you know why? Because he literally keeps repeating his name and three other words. For reasons unbeknownst to this humble listener, Scott just wanted to write 21 Savage as a feature without actually giving him a verse. He is technically from across the pond, but that is a cold-hearted thing to do to Kylie Jenner's fourth favourite rapper who has tattoos on his face. The next track, 'Dumbo', is a reference to whoever decides to listen to this song for the second time, because even when Scott actually starts rapping, by then it's too little and too late. The next track is a solo by Faygo, and it is the musical representation of that one guy who swears he could have been a professional athlete if his parents would have supported him but is always injured to play in the office tournament. 'Velour' is a decent attempt by Toliver and Sheck, but it takes too long to build up for a 'decent' track; I can wait that long for a 'Yosemite' or even an 'Enzo', but the actual verse by the two artistes — not worth the wait. We then move on to 'Contest', where Scott gives Faygo a chance to redeem himself, but it is repetitive bars with no meaning at all. 'ILMB' is a strong car playlist song, and except for the hook of the song, which you can't really play in front of your parents, partner, family members, or anyone else you know, it's fine. Now 'Where Was You' came as a song that was highly recommended to me before I got a chance to listen to this album, and the instrumental of the track is something I can truly back. The Japanese strings, which sound like a shamisen, take the simple and effective beat to a whole new level. For the first time in the album, a song isn't completely dependent on Scott, and if you like Future's style of delivery or Playboi Carti's bars, this is probably the track you should save from the album. Carti raps like someone who knows their last project was bad, and Future just lays back and drops a verse which he probably thought of while walking the stairs to the studio. ALSO READ: Chains & Whips: Kendrick Lamar needs to understand that the Drake beef is over, watch video Toliver gives his best performance of the album on 'No Comments', as he sticks to what he knows and is able to build a pretty catchy track from there. By the time you start reaching the end of this album, you start noticing a very apparent pattern that actually says a lot about the people involved. While the verses are inconsistent, often shallow, and overproduced, the backing tracks of all songs are genuinely good. It's the quality of the backing track that keeps you from skipping some of these songs, and the track 'Beep Beep' is a great example of this. Another problem with this album is that the artistes think that putting voice notes before and after every other song will make this project more profound. People listen to the voice notes on Kendrick or J. Cole's album because the songs are actually good. Paul's Skit is an actual recognisable phenomenon because Eminem is considered to be the greatest rapper of all time. Scott often talks about the rapper Kid Cudi and how he was his biggest inspiration while growing up, and I think that is the root of this problem. Scott listened to Cudi and became a rapper, but the newer artists like Faygo are listening to Scott. While Scott's influence cannot be denied, he isn't the kind of rapper who would release a song like Pac's 'Dear Mama' or Eminem's 'Sing For The Moment'. He isn't really saying anything, and it gives rise to a generation that is listening to rappers talking about only superficial things, the kind of things which have become such damaging stereotypes for the entire genre. A lot of the 'modern-day' rap music is beguiling in nature, because even though some of the sounds are attractive, the lack of substance is harrowing and problematic. But instead of putting the responsibility of changing the world on Scott's shoulders, I think everyone involved with the genre need to have their back up. To give an example of the most 'loved' artist of this generation, Drake, who delivers a 'Churchill Downs' for every 'Hotline Bling', giving the audiences and the budding generation of artistes something to aspire to. Jackboys 2 is a project with a few hits and a lot of misses, but mostly it's an album which doesn't compel you for a revisit. Nothing hits you so hard so that you pause it midway and call your friends to talk about it, the mark of a great album, which Jackboys 2 doesn't achieve. The only thing even more disappointing than the album is the fact that you will have to listen to the songs all over your Instagram for the next 6 months until J Cole decides to make music again and Drake decides to make money again.

Jackboys, Justin Bieber, Clipse: All the Contenders for Big Debuts on Next Week's Billboard 200
The Contenders is a midweek column that looks at artists aiming for the top of the Billboard charts, and the strategies behind their efforts. This week, for the upcoming Billboard 200 dated July 26, we look at some much-anticipated albums and exciting surprise drops looking to impact next week's race to the chart's top. Jackboys & Travis Scott, (Cactus Jack/Epic): The second release from the Cactus Jack label's semi-eponymous rap collective — consisting of members Don Toliver, Sheck Wes, Chase B, SoFaygo, Wallie the Sensei, Luxury Tax 50, and of course label head Travis Scott — arrived on Sunday (July 13), already two days into the tracking week. But five days is more than enough time for Scott, one of the consistently best-selling rappers of the last decade, to do big business and launch a serious threat to the Billboard 200's top spot. Then, as is often the case with Scott's releases, there is a wide variety of physical options also for sale through the webstore — including five different vinyl editions, three standard CD variants and two expanded packaging CD variants (in larger packaging and with different covers). There are also four webstore-exclusive download albums available each with 17 songs, each with different covers and three with one unique bonus track each. All these physical releases should add up to another major sales debut for Scott and his crew — and the set is also off to a very strong start on streaming, with multiple top 10 entries on both the Apple Music real time chart and Spotify's Daily Top Songs USA listing. The combination seems likely to result in Jackboys 2 following its predecessor, which launched with 154,000 units upon its late 2019 release (despite its full tracklist being just seven songs — though it had a bevy of merch/digital download album bundles helping its first-week numbers), to a No. 1 debut, making it the first album to interrupt Morgan Wallen's Billboard 200 reign since I'm the Problem debuted two months earlier. Justin Bieber, (ILH/Def Jam): If not for Jackboys 2, it might have been a fairly close race for the top spot between I'm the Problem and this week's most unexpected chart contender: Swag, the surprise new album from Canadian pop superstar Justin Bieber, announced a mere 10 hours before its Friday (July 11) release. The unexpectedness of its release was nearly matched by the unexpectedness of its sound — an alternative-leaning R&B sonic palette, heavily influenced by artist collaborators Dijon, and Eddie Benjamin, and by new go-to writer/producer Carter Lang. The 21-track project — which also features appearances from guest rappers Lil B, Sexyy Red and Gunna, as well as gospel singer Marvin Winans and a trio of skits with comedian Druski — has been a major force on streaming since its Friday debut, swarming both the Spotify and Apple Music charts. Though its presence has receded a bit on both in the days since (particularly following the Jackboys 2 bow), lead single 'Daisies' still resides atop both charts, and the overall streaming numbers for the album in its first week should end up being fairly tremendous. However, unlike Jackboys 2, streaming will have to make for the great majority of Swag's overall first-week units. As is usually the case with such surprise releases, there's no physical version of the album yet available for purchase — it's not expected to arrive until December — meaning that all of its sales will have to come via digital downloads, with no additional variants yet available to boost its numbers there. That will likely cap Swag at a first-week number below where it would need to be to compete with Jackboys 2, potentially making it Bieber's first original full-length studio album not to debut atop the Billboard 200. Clipse, (Self-Released): In plenty of earlier tracking weeks this year, the new album from venerated Virginia hip-hop duo the Clipse would've been a real contender for a Billboard 200 No. 1 debut. However, in a crowded week also including new sets from two major stars, a reigning behemoth in Morgan Wallen's 37-track blockbuster, and also a still-rising breakout success in the soundtrack to Netflix's animated musical KPop Demon Hunters, it might instead have to set its sights on a top five debut on the chart. Still, it should have a chance to make such a bow, thanks in large part to expected robust sales. The set is available for purchase in six vinyl variants, two of which are signed, as well as three CD variants (one signed), two cassettes and a whopping 13 boxed sets in branded boxes, with branded clothing and a CD included. (The physical editions, which are widely available, have a 12-song tracklist; the streaming and digital download versions add in a 13th song, 'So Be It.') The set also had a strong streaming debut, with most of its 13 tracks reaching the Spotify and Apple Music daily charts, though its numbers there will likely be dwarfed by the Jackboys and Bieber sets. Nonetheless, the combination should make for easily the best Billboard 200 showing from the duo since its debut, 2002's Lord Willin', which bowed at No. 4 on the chart. (Its last effort before the duo's recent hiatus, 2009's Till the Casket Drops, reached just No. 41 — though during a crowded Christmas season that December.) IN THE MIX TWICE, (JYP) Another release that might have been able to contend for the top spot in a slower week is the latest from K-pop superpower TWICE, This Is For. The girl group's new set is expected to sell well, being available in 15 CD variants (all with collectibles included, some randomized) as well as three vinyl editions, and a mid-week deluxe edition for download and streaming. The latter also includes two bonus tracks, one of which ('Takedown') is also available on another album likely to appear in next week's Billboard 200 top 10, the KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack. ATEEZ, (KQ/RCA/Legacy): Golden Hour already scored a No 2 debut on the Billboard 200 for K-pop boy band ATEEZ upon its June release — but now the EP is available in the widely expanded In Your Fantasy edition, which adds an extra 10 tracks (mostly solos from the octet's individual members) to the previous five-track set. The deluxe edition was released via six CD variants, all with collectibles (some randomized), which should drive sales and propel the set back to the chart's top 10. GIVĒON, (Not So Fast/Epic): It's a bit of tough luck for the R&B hitmaker that his sophomore effort debuts in such a packed week — including the late-announced comeback of his old 'Peaches' collaborator Bieber — but the album should still stream and sell fairly well, helped by five vinyl and two CD variants (one of each of which is signed). It could be a photo finish as to whether the set will bring GIVĒON to the top 10 on the Billboard 200, after his 2022 set Give or Take topped out at No. 11. (His 2021 EP compilation When It's All Said and Done… Take Time reached No. 5, marking his career peak to date.)
