AJ Styles makes 1st TNA appearance in over 10 years at Slammiversary; WWE NXT stars leave as champions

A.J. Styles returned to a Total Nonstop Action (TNA) wrestling ring for the first time since December 2013 on Sunday night during the Slammiversary pay-per-view. Styles came out to his most well-known entrance music. As soon as "get ready to fly" was heard in the UBS Arena, the fans on Long Island, New York, nearly blew the lid off the place. Styles took in the moment and addressed the crowd. "It's been a long road. Here I am in this ring in this company where my name was built. I am the phenomenal A.J. Styles," he said to the roaring crowd. "There was a time where they said you may not be able to come back. But here I am, and I'm telling you the lights are a little bit brighter here, the crowd is a little bit louder here and Leon (Slater), the talent is better than it's ever been." Styles put over Slater, who had just defeated Moose to win the X-Division Championship and become the youngest X-Division titleholder in TNA's history. "The Phenomenal One" is considered to be the greatest TNA wrestler of all-time. He was a six-time X-Division champion and won the TNA World Heavyweight Championship twice. He was also a three-time National Wrestling Alliance heavyweight champion when the company was aligned with TNA. He joined WWE in 2014. It was far from the only highlight of the night. WWE NXT women's champion Jacy Jayne went head-to-head against TNA knockouts champion Masha Slamovich in a winner-takes-all match. Jayne proved that it was her world and everyone else was living it. She nailed Slamovich with the Rolling Encore and pinned her for the win. It was one of the best matches of the night, and Jayne will get to waltz into NXT on Tuesday night as a double champ. Jeff and Matt Hardy, the legendary tag team known as The Hardys, were challenging for the TNA Tag Team Championship in a four-way ladder match. Nic and Ryan Nemeth were defending their tiles, with A.J. Francis and KC Navarro and Myron Reed and Zachary Wentz also entering the fray. Jeff Hardy showcased that he still has some high-flying tricks up his sleeve. He hit two swanton dives onto Reed and Wentz and then dropped a swing-rope ladder into the match. The Hardys fended off the Nemeths in the ring, and Jeff climbed the ladder to obtain the titles. At the end of the match, TNA Hall of Famer Bully Ray came out to address the Hardys. Bully Ray, one half of Team 3D with D'Von Dudley, challenged The Hardys to one last match at Bound for Glory in October. The three men shook hands in the ring, and it appeared the match was on. In the main event, WWE NXT star Trick Williams put the TNA World Championship on the line against Mike Santana and Joe Hendry. It looked like it was going to be Santana's night. He came out through the crowd with a ton of fans behind him. The champion walked out to the Harlem Gospel Ensemble singing his entrance music. It had a big fight feel. Toward the end of the match, Williams was nowhere to be found. It looked like he was hurt as TNA medical personnel attended to him for the final five minutes or so. Santana got his hands on Hendry and hit him with Spin the Block. He tried to go for the pin. At the last second, Williams rushed back into the ring and threw him out of it. He pinned Hendry to pick up the win and retain the title. Slammiversary set the record for most-attended U.S. event of all time as 7,623 people showed up to the event. WWE ref Vicky D'Errico captures attention of pro wrestling world at Evolution

WWE referee Vicky D'Errico was introduced to the broader pro wrestling audience on Sunday night as she officiated the NXT Women's Championship match between Jacy Jayne and Jordynne Grace at Evolution. D'Errico was among the female officials to be showcased at the all-female premium live event. However, she's become a fixture in the NXT ring as Jessika Carr and Daphne LaShaunn have made names for themselves on the WWE main roster. D'Errico was quick to go viral across social media as soon as she appeared. She made her debut at an NXT live event in November 2024 after initially participating in tryouts in Philadelphia, around the same time WrestleMania 40 was taking place at Lincoln Financial Field in the city. The Rhode Island native is also a former professional boxer who fought in a few Rough N' Rowdy events, which were hosted by Barstool Sports. Now, she has the privilege of officiating some of the biggest matches in the brand's history. As for the Jayne-Grace matchup, Grace thought she had a partner in Blake Monroe to help her get the push she needed to finally capture the NXT Women's Championship. However, after Monroe knocked out all of Jayne's cronies on the side of the ring, she blasted Grace with the belt. It gave Jayne the opening for the win. All four athletes will be back on NXT on Tuesday night. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Drew McIntyre gives WWE women's division its flowers ahead of Evolution

WWE will host the second-ever all-female premium live event, Evolution, on Sunday night – seven years after the first one kickstarted the women's revolution in the company. There will be five championship bouts on the card and a battle royal with the winner earning a future shot at a title. Up and down, the card features veterans from the past, including Nikki Bella, and superstars who are set to lead the company into the future like Jacy Jayne, Sol Ruca, Zaria, Jaida Parker and others. WWE veteran Drew McIntyre has been at the company and watched the women's division go from demeaning matches to exciting showstoppers. "The women keep getting better and better and better. At this point it's redundant to talk about some of the things I used to talk about because I was there when the women weren't getting the opportunities and it was just a whole different part of the show," he told Fox News Digital. "A 'light me up match' where the crowd kinda felt a different way during their matches and you want to go after the women because they were ready to see some traditional wrestling and it changed dramatically to you don't want to follow most of the women because they're so freaking good. "You're gonna be struggling to follow that match. And to watch the new generation come through and the generation after that from NXT, they're just absolute killing it right now." In all aspects of what makes a WWE superstar a superstar, McIntyre said the women's division is on fire. "Obviously, in ring counts – that's the thing that mattered to me for most of my career – but it's the overall game, it's the overall presentation," he said. "It's the characters, it's the stories, it's getting comfortable on the microphone to make that complete WWE superstar. And the girls are really killing all across the board right now. I'll be watching like everybody else." Evolution will take place on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET in Atlanta.
