A Spicy Heist Story for the Student Loan Era

THE PAYBACK, by Kashana Cauley I have a Facebook aunt who shall not be named who recently reposted a meme from UnWoke Americans that read, 'You cry my body my choice. I say your student loan, your debt.' I don't think she'd like 'The Payback,' by Kashana Cauley, very much, a novel that takes on our absurd, predatory student loan system with a zany sense of humor. Because how else can we stomach it? 'The Payback' is Cauley's second book, a twisted, cathartic romp that imagines a world so extraordinary — with systems so evil, punishment so extreme, people so apathetic — it could almost be real life. It's a student loan heist story. A tale of revenge, cheap tequila, a hand-sewn Catwoman suit and the mall, with debt and despair simmering in the background. Our spicy narrator, Jada Williams, is 'pushing 40' and working at a clothing store in a mall in Glendale, Calif., having been recently fired from a movie costume design gig. She's swimming in unfolded polo shirts and student loans. 'Why did I belong to a generation of people who thought so many problems in life could be solved by going to more school?' Oof. Like our messiest friends, she's fun to hang out with. Upon finding a Patek Philippe watch left in a dressing room, she fantasizes about swiping it and selling it to her jewelry guy: 'I'd perfected the art of lifting the goods with the gentle touch that other, more boring people probably used to do something insufferable, like make soufflés.' She has sticky fingers, an eye for fashion and an ear for music, which plays through the book so intuitively, the audiobook could be sound tracked. We hear 'Knights in White Satin' by Giorgio Moroder, and then Diana Ross, Sister Sledge, Peter Gabriel. Miley Cyrus's 'Party in the U.S.A.' plays from the store's speakers as tragedy unfolds, and mourners do karaoke at a funeral. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Woman wanted on warrant for CT vehicle theft allegedly attempts to flee from state police at court

A woman tried fleeing from state police at a courthouse in Manchester on Monday as troopers were trying to arrest her on a warrant connected to a theft investigation, state police said. Troopers at 2:13 p.m. responded to Manchester Superior Court after learning that a woman there had a warrant out for her arrest, according to Connecticut State Police. While taking the suspect into custody — who was identified as 25-year-old Jada Williams of Worcester, Massachusetts — she reportedly ran from troopers and tried getting into a vehicle, state police said. She was brought out of the vehicle before she could get away, at which point she continued resisting troopers, according to state police. Williams was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit fourth-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit third-degree criminal mischief, conspiracy to commit receipt from illegal use of credit card and interfering with an officer. According to state police, the warrant out for her arrest stemmed from an incident in October 2024 when she allegedly broke into a vehicle and stole several things from inside. The stolen items included several credit and debit cards, which state police allege Williams used to rack up more than $1,000 in charges. Williams was held on bonds totaling $100,000 and was expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Rockville Superior Court.

After a 23-11 mark and a trip to the NCAA Tournament's round of 32, the Iowa Hawkeyes are turning their attention toward next season and looking to restock the cupboard with some of the nation's top playmakers. Iowa hosted former Arizona guard Jada Williams on a Friday visit. The 5-foot-8 guard was a 2024 Pac-12 All-Freshman Team selection and she led the Wildcats in scoring this past season. Advertisement Williams averaged 12.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.6 steals per game last season at Arizona. The Kansas City, Mo., native shot 37.1% from the field and 29.2% from 3-point range and led Arizona in assists with 87 during the 2024-25 campaign. Williams and Arizona went to the NCAA Tournament during her freshman season, but the Wildcats missed the dance this past season and posted a 37-30 overall record during her two years in Tucson, Ariz. Williams was a McDonald's All-American and a five-star signee in Arizona's 2023 class. A product of La Jolla Country Day School, Williams was ranked as the No. 21 player nationally according to ESPN. Advertisement Iowa is set to return guards Aaliyah Guyton, Taylor McCabe, Kylie Feuerbach, Taylor Stremlow and Teagan Mallegni and the Hawkeyes signed five-star guard Addie Deal out of Mater Dei High School in California and four-star guard Journey Houston out of Davenport North in Iowa. With senior guards Lucy Olsen and Sydney Affolter moving on, adding a proven point guard that brings an established track record of production would take some pressure off everyone else. Iowa head women's basketball coach Jan Jensen said that she liked her roster after the Hawkeyes' season ended against Oklahoma, but she indicated that Iowa would attempt to be active in the transfer portal. "I'm really excited about the future,' Jensen said. 'I love our freshmen. I love the incomers, and if we can just get a couple portal pieces, I think it'd be really fun."
