Hybrid warfare as Chery Tiggo 7 takes swipe at Jaecoo J7
Special launch offer means that this frugal SUV will go on sale from less than R600k. The Chery Tiggo 7 SHS has an electric range of up to 93km. Picture: Supplied Nothing is going to stop the Chinese from bringing vehicles to market faster than anybody else. Never mind the legacy brands like VW, Toyota, Ford, Kia, Hyundai, Chery has just taken a real swipe at sister brand Jaecoo. The new Chery Tiggo 7 CSH, which is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), goes straight up against the Jaecoo J7 SHS. It has the same tech and the same sort of spec level, but at a better price. The Jaecoo J7 SHS comes in at R689 900, whereas Chery is offering you a Tiggo 7 CSH Plus for R619 900. And a Tiggo 7 CSH Ultra for R679 900. And for three months only, you can get the Plus for R599 900 as part of an introductory launch price special. Thanks to an 18.3kWh battery, the Chery Tiggo 7 CSH can travel up to 93km on electric power alone it is claimed. The combined fuel consumption number comes in at 4.9 litres per 100km. This translates into a total combined range that is said to be up to 1 200km. Which should see you get you to Durban and back on a single tank of fuel. Being a PHEV, you must plug the Chery Tiggo 7 CSH in to fully charge it. This is not a mild hybrid that charges its much smaller battery up itself. But charging is said to be convenient with a full recharge taking 45 minutes to one hour using a public DC fast charger. Or between four and eight hours when plugged into an AC wall box charger at home. Comprehensive set of specfications Like petrol engine models, the Tiggo 7 CSH boasts every luxury, advanced safety aid you can think of as standard. From automatic LED headlights, taillights, and daytime running lights to a power-operated tailgate. To Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking, and Intelligent High Beam Control. Right down to wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with 50W wireless charging. Jaecoo J7 SHS hybrid: Stylish tech-laden SUV boasts 1 200km range

Based on the J7 SUV, the J7 SHS (Super Hybrid System) combines a 1.5l turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, using a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) to deliver power exclusively to the front wheels. An 18.3kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery allows for an all-electric range of around 90km and the model can offer a claimed total range of up to 1 200km. Features include a 10.25-inch infotainment screen that is compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Sony eight-speaker sound system, head-up display, 50W wireless phone charger, dual-zone climate control (with rear vents), heated and ventilated power-adjustable front seats, ambient lighting, panoramic sunroof and a 360-degree camera with front and rear parking sensors. Boot space is fairly limited with 240l available behind the rear seats, but it expands to 896l with the seats folded flat. Together, the system delivers a combined total of 255kW of power and 525N.m of torque. All of this power is sent to the front wheels through the aforementioned dedicated single-speed DHT. The J7 SHS can accelerate from 0 – 40km/h in 2.98 seconds, reach 60km/h in 4.46 seconds, and cross 100km/h in 8.55 seconds. When plugged into a 40kW DC charger, the battery can be topped up from 30 – 80% in just 20 minutes. The local automotive scene just got a significant jolt of electrified energy as the Omoda and Jaecoo brands officially unleash their latest plug-in hybrid contenders onto South African roads. Leading the charge are two distinct SUVs: the premium-focused Omoda C9 PHEV and the more accessible Jaecoo J7 SHS (Super Hybrid System), signalling a bold commitment to New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in our market. Pivotal moment For Omoda, the arrival of the C9 PHEV marks a pivotal moment. Positioned as their flagship luxury SUV, this plug-in hybrid aims to blend the serene efficiency of electric driving with the reassurance of petrol power and a hefty dose of premium appeal. Performance Talking performance, the C9 PHEV does not disappoint, and a brief stint behind the wheel on the road to the Gerotek Testing Centre produced brisk acceleration with instant throttle response – the hallmark of electric power. Significantly, the ride is almost eerily quiet and supremely comfortable as the suspension soaks up the many ripples on our roads. At Gerotek there was an opportunity to do what is generally known as the 'moose test' – or, more pertinent for us, a pothole dodger – that involves a rapid swerve around an object from 60km/h and back into your original lane. For a car topping the 2-ton mark the agility and lack of histrionics were impressive. Interior Step inside, and the C9 PHEV envelops occupants in a cabin focused on contemporary luxury and advanced tech. The ambiance is set by Black/Light Brown Premium Nappa leather-trimmed seats, with the driver enjoying six-way electric adjustment and the front passenger four-way. Both front seats offer heating and ventilation, complemented by a heated Nappa leather steering wheel. Rear passengers aren't forgotten, benefiting from an electrically adjustable backrest and seat heating. Dual-zone climate control, rear air-conditioning controls and heated/cooled armrest storage add further comfort layers. Acoustic laminated glass significantly reduces wind noise, fostering a tranquil cabin environment. Technology takes centre stage with dual 12,3-inch digital displays – one for the driver's cluster, the other controlling infotainment and vehicle settings. An intuitive Intelligent Voice Command system (activated by "Hello, Omoda") allows hands-free operation. Entertainment is delivered crisply via a 12-speaker Sony sound system, while connectivity is covered by Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 50W wireless charging pad. Practicality isn't sacrificed, with a power-operated tailgate revealing 660 litres of boot space, expandable to 1 783 litres with the rear seats folded. This includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Blind-Spot Monitoring (BSM) with intervention, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Brake (RCTA/RCTB), Lane Departure Warning and Prevention (LDW/LDP), Lane Change Assist (LCA), Integrated Cruise Assist (ICA), and Traffic Congestion Assist (TCA). Further reassurance comes from front and rear parking sensors, a 540-degree surround-view camera, and a comprehensive array of airbags. Pricing Priced at R999,000, the Omoda C9 PHEV is backed by a strong ownership package: a seven-year/100,000 km service plan, a seven-year/200,000 km vehicle warranty, a 10-year/200,000 km warranty for electric drive components, a 10-year/1-million km engine warranty, and an industry-leading 10-year/unlimited km warranty for the main power battery pack for the first owner (reverting to 10 years/200,000km subsequently). Seven years of roadside assistance completes the offering. Jaecoo J7 SHS: Electrified Accessibility Alongside the premium C9 PHEV, Jaecoo is expanding its popular J7 range with the new J7 SHS plug-in hybrid derivative. Building on the J7's success since its 2024 launch, which drew favourable comparisons for its driving dynamics, the SHS focuses on making plug-in tech more accessible. Power The J7 SHS pairs a turbo-charged 1,5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor, delivering power smoothly via a 3-gear Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT). While output figures are lower than its Omoda sibling (approximately 265kW), the focus here is on efficiency and daily electric usability. Its standout feature is an impressive 90 km all-electric range, sufficient for many urban commutes. The smaller 18,3kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery supports fast charging, replenishing from 30% to 80% in around 20 minutes using a 40 kW DC charger. Combined range reaches an estimated 1,200 km, with fuel consumption rated below 5.0l/100 km overall, potentially dropping to 1.5 l/100 km under optimal electric use. Visually, the J7 SHS retains the model's distinctive 'waterfall' grille and gains unique 19-inch alloy wheels, maintaining the signature lighting elements front and rear. Inside, it offers a comfortable leather interior, ambient lighting, a large central infotainment screen, heads-up display, wireless smartphone integration (Apple CarPlay/Android Auto), and an eight-speaker Sony audio system. The Jaecoo J7 SHS plug-in hybrid is said to have a combined range of 1,200 kilometres. Jaecoo is a subsidiary of Chery, which sells the Tiggo 4, Tiggo Cross, Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8. The Jaecoo J7 SHS plug-in hybrid version of the J7 SUV is set to become the second Jaecoo nameplate to be launched locally and the first of several new and electrified models to be launched. Power As a hybrid powertrain, the J7 SHS is powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with 105kW and 215Nm and a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor with 150kW and 310Nm coupled to a Lithium Iron Phosphate battery providing peak outputs of 255kW and 525Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels via a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT). Jaecoo claims an all-electric range of 90 kilometres with the battery reaching 30-80% when connected to a 40kW DC charger in 20 minutes. Consumption The J7 SHS plug-in hybrid is said to have a combined range of 1,200 kilometres on a tank of fuel, consuming less than 5l/100km. On a recent 1 100 kilometre journey between Cape Town and Gqeberha, the J7 SHS posted an average fuel consumption of 4.88l/100 km. Which Chinese car brands offer the best warranty?
There are a lot of new automotive brands arriving in Australia and they're all making big promises. But Australian consumers can be a little wary, particularly considering that buying a new car – no matter how attractive its price tag and features are – is usually the second largest investment they will make after purchasing a house. So trust and reliability are important factors when making a car-buying decision; you want to know that if anything goes wrong you'll be covered. 2025 MG S5 EV Credit: CarExpert And that's why there is a warranty war brewing, with many of the newest brands setting new aftersales benchmarks to provide consumers with the peace of mind they need. So, let's see which of the newest automotive brands in Australia offer the best ownership credentials. Of the Chinese brands MG sets the standard for aftersales ownership provisions with a 10-year, 250,000km warranty across its entire model range, including its latest hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric vehicles. Supplied Credit: CarExpert For reference, Nissan offers a generous 10-year/300,000km warranty and Mitsubishi a 10-year/200,000km warranty, but both decade-long warranties are conditional on servicing at each Japanese brands' authorised dealerships – if not the warranty is five years (or unlimited-km for Nissan and 100,000km for Mitsubishi). MG's warranty applies to all cars registered after August 1, 2024 and used for private purposes only, regardless of where they're serviced. For business operators and fleets, the warranty period is seven years or 160,000km, whichever occurs first. Also included during the warranty period is free roadside assistance. Chery and its subsidiary brand Jaecoo provide seven years of warranty coverage with unlimited kilometres for private buyers. For commercial use, the warranty duration remains the same, but the distance is capped at 150,000km, whichever comes first. 2025 Jaecoo J7 SHS Credit: CarExpert For its range of electric vehicles (EVs) including the E5, Chery provides an eight-year/unlimited-km warranty on the high-voltage battery. It also offers free roadside assistance for the first 12 months, which is renewed annually for the duration of the warranty period if the vehicle is maintained through its authorised dealer network. Newcomer Geely matches Chery for peace of mind, with a seven-year/unlimited-km warranty on vehicles bought for private use, and it guarantees that is high-voltage batteries will maintain at least 70 per cent of their original capacity over the first eight years. 2025 Geely EX5 Credit: CarExpert For commercial use, the warranty coverage for both the vehicle and battery pack is reduced to 150,000km, without change to the time period. Geely also provides free roadside assistance for the first year of ownership, which is extended up to seven years each time the vehicle is serviced through its dealer network. BYD comes in next with a six-year warranty over 150,000km for both private and commercial customers. The high-voltage battery pack and drive unit (which includes the electric motor and power controller) are covered for eight years or 160,000km, whichever comes first, with a guarantee that the battery will retain at least 70 per cent of its charge capacity over this period of time. 2025 BYD Sealion 6 Credit: CarExpert BYD also provides free roadside assistance for the first 12 months, which is renewed annually for up to six years with each logbook service. You'll need to read the fine print for each model in the LDV range to determine the warranty coverage as they differ drastically. For its T60 ute, the diesel-powered Max version has the longest warranty period at seven years and 250,000km, with five years of free roadside assistance, but the electric eT60 is only covered for five years and 160,000km. Its battery pack, however, is guaranteed to retain a useable state of change for at least eight years. 2025 LDV T60 Max Credit: CarExpert The D90 large SUV, which uses the same fundamental mechanical underpinnings, is also covered for seven years with five years of roadside assistance, but the distance is reduced to 200,000km. The petrol-powered MIFA people mover has the same level of coverage as the D90, but the electric MIFA 9 only has a five-year/160,000km warranty while the battery pack is covered for eight years and 200,000km. The hard-working G10+ and V80 vans have the lowest warranty coverage at three years and 100,000km with free roadside assistance. 2025 LDV G10+ Credit: CarExpert Interestingly, the mid-size Deliver 7 with a more powerful version of the same engine in the G10+ has a seven-year/200,000km warranty, while the electric eDeliver 7 is only covered for five years and 160,000km, but its battery is guaranteed for a longer distance of 250,000km over the first eight years. And LDV's largest model, the Deliver 9, which is available as either a van, cab chassis or bus in short- and long-wheelbase configurations, has a three-year/160,000km warranty for remaining model year 2023 stock, while newer versions are covered for seven years and 200,000km, all with free roadside assistance. However, the electric eDeliver 9 is only covered for five years and 160,000km, and eight years for the battery pack. All vehicles in the GMW/Haval range are covered by a seven-year/unlimited-km warranty for private buyers, as well as for ABN holders, and general, national and government fleet use. However, commercial operators such as rental car, taxi and ride share operators have a limit on mileage of 150,000km. 2025 GWM Tank 300 Credit: CarExpert For its passenger vehicles, including the Haval Jolion, H6, H6 GT SUVs, the Ora city hatch and regular Cannon ute, GWM provides five years of free roadside assistance. However, for owners of the Tank 300, Tank 500 and Cannon Alpha ute, this is extended to seven years. Zeekr provides a five-year/unlimited-km warranty for its current range of vehicles – the ZeekrX and Zeekr 009 – for private buyers with free roadside assistance and connected services for the duration of the warranty period. The high-voltage battery is guaranteed to retain a useable charge capacity for at least eight years and 160,000km. 2025 ZeekrX Credit: CarExpert For commercial and fleet customers, the warranty period is reduced for three years and 120,000km. The Xpeng G6 is covered by a standard five-year warranty but it has the shortest mileage clause here, at just 120,000km, though it does not stipulate between private and commercial use. 2025 Xpeng G6 Credit: CarExpert The battery pack, drive motor and battery management system are guaranteed for eight years and 160,000km. However, buyers can choose to pre-purchase an extended warranty package from one to five years on the vehicle and an additional two years on the battery (providing up to 10 years of coverage) at an extra cost, ranging between $690 for one year on the vehicle to $2990 for five years, and $1990 for two years on the battery. One of the newest arrivals, Leapmotor, provides seven years of warranty coverage for its vehicle and eight years for its battery packs, with a total driving distance limit of 160,000km for both. 2025 Leapmotor C10 Credit: CarExpert Early arrivals (MY24) of the C10 plug-in hybrid SUV are provided with five years of free roadside assistance while newer versions from MY25 have eight years.
