AMMAN — Prime Minister Jafar Hassan said Monday that economic development remains the government's top priority, with a clear focus on achieving sustainable growth and creating job opportunities across. Speaking during a meeting with the Taqaddum parliamentary bloc, attended by Acting Speaker of the Lower House Mustafa Khasawneh, Hassan said that the recent economic indicators for the first quarter of the year are 'encouraging,' pointing to improvements in growth, trade, and investment figures. 'We hope this momentum continues and that these indicators strengthen further,' Hassan said, adding that the numbers reflect progress despite a decline in the mining sector due to global market conditions. 'Had it not been for this downturn, the current indicators would have reached record levels unseen in recent years.' The prime minister also outlined 'government interventions' aimed at supporting sectors impacted by regional tensions, most notably tourism. He cited positive signs of recovery expected with the start of the next tourism season in September, the Jordan news agency, Petra, reported. He also emphasised that economy is the government's number one file, with a focus on achieving sustainable economic growth to help create job opportunities, adding that the Economic Modernisation Vision is fundamentally based on this principle, especially by supporting the private sector, expanding its role, and attracting investments, mainly into industrial cities and development zones across the country. He also highlighted major strategic infrastructure projects currently under implementation in transport, water, energy, and other sectors, citing their significance in achieving economic goals and attracting foreign investment, according to Petra. Hassan said employee efficiency remains the primary performance metric, emphasising ongoing efforts to accelerate digital transformation, upgrade institutional culture, and implement training programmes, all designed to improve public service delivery. The prime minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to political modernisation, particularly through reforms to the Local Administration Law. 'We have initiated dialogue and will expand its scope,' he said, emphasizing that better municipal governance is essential to addressing challenges such as debt and weak services, Petra reported. 'Our goal is to maintain the path of democracy and reform while striking a balance between performance improvement and stronger governance,' he added. Khasawneh praised government outreach efforts, including visits to governorates, which he said reflect the Royal vision of modernisation across economic, political, and administrative tracks. 'These efforts noted, are especially important amid ongoing economic challenges.'

Additionally, the Cabinet approved a second additional financing agreement worth $7.5 million with the World Bank to support the Jordan Reform Management Project. The funding will help strengthen implementation of economic and structural reforms, improve the national investment registry, and enhance the public-private partnership framework.

Hassan highlighted government efforts to support the tourism sector, which was significantly affected by regional tensions. He indicated positive signs of recovery, with increased activity expected during the upcoming tourism season in September. Emphasising that economic stability remains a top priority, he outlined plans aimed at achieving sustainable growth, creating jobs and supporting private sector development. He underlined the government's focus on economic modernisation through supporting the private sector, expanding its role and incentivising investment in industrial cities and development zones across governorates. Regarding public sector modernisation, he emphasised enhancing efficiency through digital transformation, institutional development and training programmes to improve citizen services. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to political modernisation, including the development of the Local Administration Law, aimed at strengthening municipal governance and addressing issues such as debt and service quality. The goal is to balance improved performance with governance reforms while maintaining democratic processes. Acting House of Representatives Speaker Mustafa Khasawneh highlighted the constitutional framework governing the relationship between the legislature and the executive, emphasising the importance of oversight in serving national interests. He praised the government's outreach to governorates and efforts to ease people's burdens amid economic challenges. Khasawneh noted that political modernisation has reshaped parliamentary work, reflecting Jordan's progress toward sustainable development and reform. Head of the Progress Party's parliamentary bloc MP Raed Dhahrawi commended King Abdullah II's efforts to promote regional peace and stability, especially regarding the Palestinian cause. He referenced the King's speech in Strasbourg, which outlined a roadmap emphasising a two-state solution and the need to resolve regional conflicts. Dhahrawi called for enhanced oversight in vital sectors such as health to safeguard people's well-being. The meeting included an extensive discussion, with members raising questions and proposals, addressed by the Prime Minister and relevant ministers. Attending the session were Minister of State for Economic Affairs Muhannad Shehadeh; Minister of Political and Parliamentary Affairs Abdul Moneim Al Odat; and Minister of Labor Khaled Bakkar.

The oath-taking ceremony was conducted in accordance with Article 13 of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Law No. (32) of 2000. Deputy Chairman of the Board of Commissioners Karima Al-Dabet, and members Moatasem Al-Hindawi, Nidal Al-Auran, Thabet Al-Nabulsi, and Mohammad Abu Omar took the legal oath. The ceremony was attended by Minister of State for Prime Ministry Affairs Abdullah Adwan and Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority Shadi Majali.
