Review: Sunny's might be my favorite restaurant in Miami
Sunny's has been called one of the best new eateries in the world, so I had to see what all the hype was about. The big picture: Originally a pandemic pop-up, Sunny's reopened last fall with an expanded menu and permanent location just north of Little Haiti. The owners previously co-owned Jaguar Sun before closing it to focus on Sunny's. It has quickly become one of Miami's most acclaimed restaurants and is recommended by the Michelin Guide, though it hasn't earned a star yet. State of plate: We started with the tuna tartare and wagyu carpaccio ($24 each). The acidity and crunch of the lime-flavored tartare pair well with the savory creaminess of the wagyu. The Parker House Rolls ($6 for two) — one of several carryovers from Jaguar Sun — are a must-order. 🤲 Pro tip: Bring a friend or loved one and split everything. ⭐️ Most valuable plate: The $39 hanger steak is one of the best steaks I've ever eaten. 🔥 Hot take: You are encouraged to order different steak sauces (we went with the $6 peppercorn sauce), but I think the meat is better by itself. We paired that with the russet potatoes ($14), which are cooked in chicken fat for a nice flavor boost. For dessert, order the chocolate cake ($16), which tastes like a chocolatey tiramisu. 💸 By the numbers: An anniversary dinner for two cost me less than $200 before tip, a reasonable price for a special occasion. 🎶 The vibes: Sophisticated but laid back. Perfect for celebrations. The playlist runs the gamut from Talking Heads to 50 Cent. If it's nice outside, eat in the verdant courtyard. If you go: 7357 NW Miami Ct.

This chic Miami steakhouse was named America's best new restaurant
Leave it to Miami to make steak sexy again: Sunny's, the just-reopened stunner in the city's Little River neighborhood, has officially topped Robb Report's list of the 10 Best New Restaurants in America —and yes, it's worth the hype (and the valet). What started as a pandemic pop-up has returned as a full-fledged dining experience, backed by Jaguar Sun alums Will Thompson and Carey Hynes. The duo, along with Executive Chef Aaron Brooks, have created a modern steakhouse that's equal parts Miami glam, Palm Beach nostalgia and culinary firepower. From the outside, Sunny's is easy to miss: ivy-covered walls, a low-slung building and no sign in sight. But step through the gate and you're instantly transported. The courtyard, shaded by a grand banyan tree, opens into a plush, Art Deco-inspired dining room where martinis clink and steak knives flash. The vibe may be effortlessly chic, but Sunny's really earns its stripes when it comes to the food. The steaks are cooked over a live oak fire and range from a 10-ounce prime hanger to a jaw-dropping 32-ounce Australian Wagyu ribeye (and for $260, it had better be life-changing). There's a deep raw bar, luxurious pastas like corn and blue crab agnolotti in saffron broth and mains that range from spice-crusted duck breast to grouper with spiced carrot butter. Sides are dialed-up comfort classics: russet potatoes fried in chicken fat, creamed spinach, Parker House rolls with honey butter. Drinks are just as thoughtful. Beverage director Will Thompson has revived cult favorites from Jaguar Sun (hello, Green Ghoul) while adding a 'choose-your-own-martini' menu and low-ABV options. The wine list spans both prestigious and obscure regions (think Burgundy to the Canary Islands) and dessert wines and coffee service round out the night. Designed by Amy Butchko of The Springs Collective, the new space cleverly marries industrial Miami grit with Palm Beach Regency flair. A 50-seat private dining room, complete with a Herzog-inspired mural, is ready for your next birthday, brand dinner or spontaneous group splurge.

Here are the 2025 James Beard Award finalists for Miami
A Miami chef and bar were named James Beard Award finalists Wednesday for the foundation's 2025 Restaurant and Chef Awards. Why it matters: The Beards are like the Oscars of the bar and restaurant world, and even if you don't win, making the final cut is a big achievement. This year, Miami earned six semifinalist nominations. What's new: Three new categories center around cocktails and other beverages: Best New Bar, Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service, and Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service. Our finalists: ViceVersa, a downtown Italian Aperitivo bar from the team behind the now-closed Jaguar Sun, is a finalist for Best New Bar. Flashback: Last year, Chang's sister, Valerie Chang of Maty's, another Midtown favorite, won in the same category.
