Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The corporation is currently coordinating with the chief minister's office (CMO) to lock in a date, likely later this month. The name of the company will be disclosed only after signing an official agreement between corporation and the company. The abattoir, built at an estimated cost of Rs 9.6-10 crore by Kerala Electrical & Allied Engineering Company Ltd, underwent comprehensive trial runs throughout June. These included the main slaughterhouse, biofilter, effluent treatment plant (ETP) and cold-storage components. The facility is equipped to handle 50-75 large animals and 25-50 small animals per eight-hour shift, with the capacity to process up to 120 animals simultaneously. It also features livestock holding pens, emergency DG power, water reservoirs, refrigeration for meat sales and crucially, a 50 KLD ETP alongside a biogas unit that can process 2,000 kg of waste daily. "The modern abattoir is designed to meet all regulatory and environmental norms. The move to partner with a private operator is aimed at ensuring professional handling and efficient functioning while providing hygienically processed meat to the public," said corporation secretary Jahamgeer S. The corporation floated an e-tender to onboard an experienced private operator for a 10-year operation and maintenance contract.

Corp's spl squad to monitor waste dumping near airport

T'puram: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the city corporation has formed three four-member squads dedicated to curb illegal waste dumping in the vicinity of Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. The move is part of a broader effort to reduce bird strikes near the airport, a recurring safety hazard linked to the accumulation of food and poultry waste in nearby open areas. The squad, which will operate 24/7, will be equipped with two vehicles — one designated for patrolling the area and the other for immediate waste removal. Health and enforcement officers will jointly oversee the operations. In the event of any violations, the squad will hand over the offenders to the local police for registering an FIR. Corporation secretary Jahamgeer S told TOI that bird strike incidents already saw a decline due to improved waste management. "With the formation of these special squads, we are aiming to bring the number of bird strikes down to zero," he said. According to the corporation officials, the primary reason for congregation of birds near the airport is dumping of biodegradable and poultry waste, which attracts scavenging birds. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Bird activity near the runway poses a critical threat to aircraft during takeoff and landing. The new squad's mandate includes stringent surveillance of key hotspots, awareness creation among locals and strict legal action against repeat offenders. The squad will operate in three shifts every day — 6am to 2pm, 2pm to 8pm and 8pm to 6am, ensuring continuous monitoring. A rotating schedule of staff members, drawn from various departments, including sanitation, health and enforcement, has been created to support the squads' operations. Contact details of the responsible personnel for each shift have also been shared with departments concerned to ensure coordination and accountability. To further support this initiative, the corporation has partnered with local ward-level committees and residents' associations. A WhatsApp number will be released for citizens to report incidents of waste dumping or public nuisance near the airport. Quick-response teams will verify complaints and initiate action. This initiative is part of a larger project under the 'Airport Clean Zone' concept, which includes identification and cleanup of illegal dump sites, deployment of camera surveillance in vulnerable zones and improved coordination between municipal and airport authorities.

Contractor considers exiting from project amid delay

T'puram: RDS Projects Ltd, the contractor for Palayam Connemara Market redevelopment, plans to withdraw from the Rs 55-crore contract signed in 2020, citing prolonged delays in work initiation due to slow demolition of existing structures. The contractor reportedly informed the civic body that the cost of the project has escalated due to the delay in starting it. Official sources report that 70% of old buildings have been demolished, with many traders relocated to a temporary prefabricated structure behind the market. The facility comprises three steel blocks designed for 460 vendors, including fish-and-meat stall owners. However, some vendors still await electricity connections and claim inadequate arrangements. Corporation Secretary Jahamgeer S stated that discussions with the contractor continue, expressing hope they won't withdraw. He assured that all vendors would be relocated within a week, with renovation beginning this financial year. Despite these assurances, disputes persist. In June, police and civic officials forcibly evicted vendors and demolished about 25 shops, allegedly violating court orders and safety protocols. RDS Projects has notified Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Ltd and the city corporation of its intention to withdraw due to demolition and relocation delays. Stakeholders worry that the contractor's withdrawal could further stall the historic market's redevelopment and necessitate retendering. The new complex is planned as a four-storey structure with modern facilities, preserving the market's main heritage gate. Local councillors and merchant associations are pushing for immediate resolution, with the corporation committing to a board meeting with smart city officials and the contractor.

Trial run begins at Kunnukuzhy abattoir, commissioning likely in first week of July

Thiruvananthapuram: After months of anticipation and delays, the trial run of the modern abattoir at Kunnukuzhy officially began on Monday. As much as 300kg of meat was used as part of the trial run. While the slaughterhouse is in operation mode, the rendering plant, responsible for converting by-products into biogas and managing waste, still awaits its dry run. According to the corporation, commissioning of the full facility was expected by the first week of July. Corporation secretary Jahamgeer S said that while the main facility's dry run was completed, the dry run of the rendering plant needs to be done this month itself. "We expect the commissioning of the abattoir by July first week if everything goes well," he said. Built at a cost of approximately Rs 10 crore by Kerala Electrical and Allied Engineering Ltd, the Kunnukuzhy complex is touted as one of the state's most advanced slaughterhouses. Its features include a biofilter system, an effluent treatment plant with 50 KLD capacity and refrigeration units for direct meat sales. Originally scheduled to be opened in April 2022, the project faced repeated delays due to design oversights, funding holdups and regulatory approvals, particularly from the Pollution Control Board. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The facility is equipped to slaughter between 50–75 large animals and 25–50 small ones per eight-hour shift, with an overall capacity to process 120 animals simultaneously. It includes livestock holding pens capable of sheltering up to 75 animals alongside emergency diesel backup, water storage and chilling rooms. A key sustainability measure is the integrated biogas plant, which could process up to 2,000 kg of waste daily. Additionally, the rendering unit is designed with odour-control systems to handle blood and offal, while waste sludge from the ETP is processed into manure or fish feed for sale. To manage upkeep, the corporation has floated an e-tender seeking experienced private operators. The partnership aims to streamline operations, with successful bidders expected to manage the facility under a 10-year contract, set to be awarded soon. The civic body has also pledged to clamp down on illegal slaughtering in city limits by registering butchers to use the new facility. Monitoring agencies note the rendering plant was delayed because of machinery bills pending approval by the Suchitwa Mission.

Sewage to resource: Muttathara plant gets a sustainable upgrade

Thiruvananthapuram: In a major step toward sustainable urban sanitation and resource recovery, the city corporation is set to implement Omniprocessor technology for the first time in Kerala at the Muttathara sewage treatment plant (STP). This pioneering project aims to treat accumulated sludge while producing clean water, electricity, and ash from sewage waste. A tripartite agreement was recently signed between the city corporation, Kerala Water Authority (KWA), and Ankur Scientific Private Ltd to execute the project. It is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, with Ankur Scientific providing technical support. The Omniprocessor system separates water vapour from solid waste. The solids are incinerated to produce energy, while the vapour is condensed into clean, potable water. Officials note that this self-sustaining process will significantly reduce sludge volume and generate reusable resources at the Muttathara facility. According to corporation secretary Jahamgeer S, the plant is expected to become operational within two months. "This is the best sludge treatment technology currently available in India. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Investire è più facile che mai BG SAXO Scopri di più Undo It not only tackles the waste problem but also converts it into valuable resources like water and electricity," he said. He added that this technology is essential for the complete removal of sludge waste at the plant. The project follows a techno-financial feasibility study conducted by a state govt-appointed committee in Oct last year. The Omniprocessor system is expected to significantly boost the city's ability to manage sewage waste in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner. KWA has floated an e-tender for the second time to select a private partner for a proposed tertiary treatment plant at the same site. The earlier tender did not receive any qualified bids. Two companies participated in the tender floated in April, and the new bids will be opened on June 21. Selection will follow a detailed technical and financial evaluation. Tertiary treatment is the final stage of wastewater processing and uses advanced methods like filtration, adsorption and disinfection to remove remaining contaminants. "We need a firm with proven expertise in tertiary treatment," a KWA official said, noting that the treated water will be suitable for non-potable uses like irrigation and industrial applications. The Rs 17-crore project includes Rs 2 crore for an overhead tank. Once complete, it will be the first such facility in the state and is expected to pave the way for large-scale wastewater reuse in the capital. The tertiary plant is expected to be operational in 18 months. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
